Monitoring schools on non-attendance, penalty charges possible

Schools in Eindhoven will be given additional checks for two days on non-attendance. ‘Bureau Leerplicht’ (office for compulsory education) of the City of Eindhoven will be visiting schools on Thursday 4 and Friday, February 5th. They check for children who go on holidays earlier than allowed.

Next week is spring/ carnival holiday. For families the perfect opportunity to go on, for instance, a ski vacation. All children reported ill on 4 and 5 February or absent without good reason will be notified by the school to Bureau Leerplicht.

Subsequently a check whether the children are actually at home and the reason of absence is carried out. Unauthorized absence will cost the parents a fine of one hundred euros per pupil per day.

"We want to prevent students from falling behind and the negative effect on the group feeling in the classroom because of children being wrongfully absent" says Alderman Youth Jannie Visscher.
