TU/e receives 1.5 million for drug research

Researchers at TU/e, along with the Hubrecht Institute and UMC Utrecht will receive 1.5 million from the Heart Foundation. The Researchers will develop a gel, which can be directly injected into the heart.

This medication can be applied directly to the affected organ instead of previous drugs, which had side effects on other parts of the body. Also, the current science doesn’t manage to keep the drugs long enough in the heart area.

The idea is that the gel will be able to be absorbed and broken down by the body simply. The residues will leave via the urine.

The goal is to repair the heart muscle more effectively after a heart attack. The heart is often damaged after a heart attack because a portion of the heart muscle atrophies, impacting the pumping force of the heart negatively. This is also called heart failure.

The study of the UMC Utrecht, the Hubrecht Institute and the TU/e is from 2015 to 2020.
