Observatory dome replaced

The copper dome on the Observatory (Sterrenwacht) is going to be replaced. Work started today.

Scaffoldings were placed around the Observatory a while ago. Today, the coppersmith is going to start his part of the work. Domes are hardly ever made of copper anymore, so it is an exceptional job.

The Sterrenwacht decided to replace the dome by another copper one, because it is a monumental building that needs to stay authentic. Copper also lasts a very long time, so it will not need to be replaced any time soon.

The job will take about six weeks. The Observatory is closed to the public during construction.
