TU/e to offer online lectures

The TU/e intends to produce MOOCs to promote the inflow of new international students and to attract the best people, both staff and students.

These Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) will be given on Coursera, the international education platform, starting April 2014. Prof.dr.ir. Bert Blocken of the Built Environment department is producing the course entitled ‘Sports and Building Aerodynamics’.

An MOOC is a free online course which an audience of tens of thousands from all over the world can participate at the same time. Instead of conventional lectures, participants can watch short 10-20 minute video clips and take part in exercises and assignments to send in. They can also contact each other on discussion forums.

The production of the video lectures forms part of a broader approach to introduce more digital education at TU/e. ‘By using MOOCs, we intend to show our strengths to the outside world’, says Cohen, who is leading the ICT for Education task force.
