The 59-year-old Eindhovener Robert Sterenburg was killed at the Venezuelan island of Isla Margarita. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this information.
Sterenburg and his girlfriend were on sailing trip taking them from the Netherlands to Australia. Their yacht was attacked by two men with firearms off the coast of Porlamar.
Sterenburg was shot when he resisted. The Eindhovener was seriously injured and died in hospital later.
