City grants for small business owners

At the end of 2024, the municipality started handing out grants to small-scale enterprises, which stand out from existing businesses. A total of 1.5 million has been made available for this plan.

Pjotr runs a bicycle shop in Woensel. Not only does he liven up the neighbourhood with his shop, but he is also the only shop where residents can get their bikes fixed. David sells (board) games in his shop. ‘People also come here to have a chat,’ he says. And Wies’ clothes shop is on Geldropseweg . She sells items she makes herself.

For the self-employed, the financial support from the municipality is very welcome. ‘If I had not received this grant, I would not have dared to start this shop,’ David says. Not only is it a start for some, but it also provides some more peace of mind. Wies adds: ‘It gives just a little bit of breathing space; I am less stressed about money.’

This also gives Wies some extra space to continue working on new projects. For instance, she is in the process of starting a foundation for young people. Together with artists, she wants to make all kinds of things from textiles. “I enjoy experimenting but also want to do concrete things such as exhibitions and projects”.

Scheme

Anyone can apply for the grant, but money is not handed over just like that,” stresses councillor Stijn Steenbakkers. “We do have strict standards. You have to put money of your own into the business,  it has to be an original idea and it cannot be a franchise.”

The subsidy is for the companies’ first two years. Fifty per cent of the rent is reimbursed in the first year and 25 per cent in the second year. The scheme has been in place since last year and some 18 initiatives have already been supported. One million is still available for the next two years.
