The two best chess players in the world, Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, will be present at the Tata Steel Chess in the Philips Stadium in January. This is according to the tournament organisers.
It was already known that this prestigious one-day tournament would take place in Eindhoven. The final number of participants has now been announced.
The young Magnus Carlsen is ranked number 1 in the world. The American Fabiano Caruana is right behind on world ranking list. The best Dutch participant is Anish Giri, the current number 5 in the world. Other participants include Ian Nepomniachtchi from Russia and another American, Wesley So.
The 82nd edition of Tata Steel Chess will be held mostly in Wijk aan Zee, from 10 to 26 January. On Thursday, 16 January, the top players will play the fifth round in the Philips Stadium. It is a free event and can be followed live online via the tournament’s website.
Schools and the regional business people will attend the tournament in Eindhoven. ‘In our region, we devise solutions for tomorrow’s challenges. Making smart connections and working together is in our DNA. A thinking sport such as chess fits in perfectly with this,’ says Eindhoven Councillor Stijn Steenbakkers.
