Today, people can follow two heart operations live. These are being performed at Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. During both surgeries, patients will have their heart valves replaced but in two different ways.

During one operation, a catheter was fed through the femoral artery. This so-called TAVI procedure (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) is less stressful for the patient than the conventional heart removal valve procedure. “Some patients can go home the day after surgery,” a cardiologist says.

Open-heart surgery is a standard procedure. A cut is then made in the breastbone. “We have been doing this for 50 years. Most patients recovered after six weeks”.

Those interested can follow the heart operations via the websites of the Algemeen Dagblad, the Eindhovens Dagblad, De Hartstichting (Heart Foundation), Harteraad (Heart Council) and hospital websites. The morning broadcast started at 11:00, and the afternoon broadcast begins at 14:15.
