A 22-year-old man from Eindhoven was arrested on suspicion of digging up a child’s grave in Veldhoven on Tuesday.

Today he was also charged with stealing 4 urns from a cemetery in Eindhoven. OM (Openbaar Ministerie, or Public Prosecution Service), therefore suspects him of 5 offences in total. Today they ruled that the man will remain in custody for at least 14 days.

As well as digging up the grave in Veldhoven, OM suspects him of stealing the contents of the grave. The man is also thought to have vandalised a nearby church, and to have stolen a lantern and crucifixes from a cemetery in Vessem.

During a house search, traces of ash were found in the suspect’s home.

A spokesperson for OM reports that the suspect was interviewed multiple times. The spokesperson would not reveal anything about the content of those interrogations, but did confirm that the suspect’s mental state is being investigated.

The suspect’s lawyer was not available to give a comment this afternoon.

The police are in contact with the relatives of the deceased and are making efforts to return the ashes to them.
