Residents of Cavallilaan in Gestel are shocked that there have been two car fires in their street in the past week.

On the night of Saturday, 3 August, at around 02:15, a parked car caught fire on this street. But that was not the first time that week. A few days earlier, another car in the street was set on fire. “It is frightening that this is happening so close to home”, a local resident, who lives opposite the location of Saturday night’s car fire, says. “It seems a pyromaniac is walking around here”.

The fire on Monday, 29 July, started at one of the car’s rear wheels. The police assumed it was deliberately set alight. That car burned out completely. On Saturday night, residents quickly saw the fire and then ran there themselves with a fire extinguisher. “We heard a loud bang and then saw a flash. My son ran there with my fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire”, the resident says. “The fire brigade and the police arrived soon after”.

The resident says gasoline was thrown over the car’s windscreen. A car parked next to it was also damaged. “It is not normal for this to happen. Let alone twice in one week”.

It is not yet known who set the cars alight. The residents are not afraid, but do hope the car fires will not become a regular occurrence.
