The Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands) has collected 1,266 signatures against the proposed large parking lot in the Dommeldal (Dommel Valley) near Waalre.

The parking lot for thousands of cars is to be built in the green area between Waalre and the A67 and is intended for use by ASML staff.

According to the environmental organisation, such a car park is a bad idea: the spot where it will be built is a vulnerable natural area, they say. Also, there, nature would be compensated precisely where it had to disappear elsewhere. Natuurmonumenten (The Nature Conservation Foundation) also signed the petition.

No definite plan

It is unclear whether ASML wants a parking place at this location. The Veldhoven chip machine manufacturer earlier announced not to go ahead with the plan immediately. The company wants to focus more on a sustainable mode of transportation, such as the bicycle. On the other hand, according to the Municipality of Waalre, the group has not yet indicated that they are not interested.

The Waalre Municipality has already spent EUR500,000 of research into the parking lot. In the ED, the City Council now says it will not put aside money for further research.

Friends of the Earth Netherlands will hand in the petition on Thursday at the Waalre Town Hall.
