Minibus to replace discontinued 55 service in Tongelre

A survey has shown that dozens of Eindhoven residents were affected by the discontinuation of the 55 bus service, which the city council now wants to replace with a minibus service.

In total, over 1200 residents of Tongelre replied to the survey. 850 of them regularly used the 55 service. Of these, 208 respondents said they can’t reach their destinations anymore following the discontinuation, or that they are left dependent on family or friends.

Visiting the weekly market and Haagdijk shopping centre in particular are proving difficult for residents after the 55 was scrapped. The nearest bus stop is 450 meters away, too far for elderly residents.

The council looked into Taxbus and taxi company De Witte Raaf as possible alternatives. However, 80% of respondents rejected this option due to inflexible hours of service, high costs, and general inconvenience.

The council will submit its proposal to the provincial authorities of Noord-Brabant. Costs and sources of funding are as yet unclear.
