Work starts on new youth complex Willemstraat

Renovation of a former corporate headquarters on the Willemstraat began today, making way for a new residential studio complex.

An attempt to block the renovation is currently making its way through administrative courts, however planners decided to go ahead with the project following a risk assessment. Contractors will begin work in the coming weeks.

Housing corporation Woonbedrijf highlighted the need for affordable housing for young people. The new residential complex will house residents aged 23 and under, including students and those receiving youth social care.

Studios in the complex will vary in size, from 18 to 52 square meters. A number of the units are integrated space boxes – mobile homes that resemble container houses – previously located at the TU/e.

Residents will also be given a voice in the new complex, having a say in aspects such as the management plan, noise reduction efforts, and keeping residents informed.

The new complex is scheduled for completion in March 2018.
