‘Van Abbemuseum wants to continue independently’

The Van Abbemuseum wants to be independent, and thus no longer linked to the city of Eindhoven. The museum is working on a plan to realize that. As reported by the Eindhovens Dagblad. As of January 1, 2017, the museum would like to operate independently.

The Van Abbemuseum is a bit of a problem child to the Eindhoven politics. It costs the municipality 4 million a year, and was previously criticized for doing little its self. Little initiative was taken, for example to increase the number of visitors to the museum, and not enough was done to gather more money from sponsors for instance.

Whether the contribution from the municipality will decrease if the museum is independent, it is not yet clear. The Van Abbe is still working on solid cuts. In five years (2013 to 2017) a total of 2.7 million must be economized.

Next week a meeting in which alderman Schreurs and Van Abbe Director Van Gennip both are present. Then the plans for an independent Van Abbemuseum will be discussed.
