AH first supermarket to open on Christmas Day

The Albert Heijn branch at the Cassandraplein in Woensel is the first Eindhoven supermarket that will open its doors on Christmas Day.

Franchise manager Rik Engel makes use of the possibility created by recently introduced more flexible opening hours. According to the ED, Engel said: "On that day I expect many people to come to the store in order to buy the last ingredients for the Christmas dinner". He has also set his hopes on people who do not celebrate Christmas, because it is not part of their culture.

The Albert Heijn head office has decided to leave it up to the franchisees whether or not to open on, for instance, Whitsun or Christmas. Other major supermarket chains will remain closed on Christmas Day. Most shops are open on Boxing Day, though.
