German multi-national takes over TU/e start-up Peer+

German Merck, leading company for high-tech products in the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, acquires TU/e spin-off Peer+, that develops Smart Energy Glass.

This glass uses liquid crystal displays (lcd) enabling it to switch from light to dark and to generate solar energy at the same time.

Casper van Oosten founded Peer+ during his doctoral studies at the TU/e in 2008. Merck already bought 70% of Peer+ stocks in 2011.

Merck wants to market the Smart Energy Glass with cooperation partners. In the future, the glass should be able to switch from light to dark quicker and to change into any desired colour.

The R&D department will remain in Eindhoven.
