At least six students in Eindhoven have been infected with the mumps virus. The GGD has confirmed this.

Last week, the health service received reports that students may be infected with mumps. A group of students was then examined. Six of them were found to be infected. According to the GGD, more students are sick with the virus.

Mumps is a very contagious infectious disease. The virus causes inflammation of the salivary gland near the ear. Often it starts with symptoms like a headache and fever. In men, the inflammation can also occur in the testicles. The virus spreads through small drops of mucus that are released from the nose and pharynx during coughing, sneezing, talking, and hand contact .

Students who have been vaccinated twice as children can get symptoms, but they are usually mild. People who have not been vaccinated are more susceptible to the disease.
