Eindhoven marathon: Kirwa, Assafe, Robi favourites

0

Kenyan Kirwa, Ethiopians Assefa and Robi are the favorites for winning this year’s Eindhoven Marathon.

The organization expects that at least one of the three participants will set a time of two hours, six minutes. Kirwa came second last year in Eindhoven, finishing in 2:06.13. Assefa and Robi also finished in times of just over two hours and six minutes.

“Since 2014, winners of the Eindhoven marathon managed to complete the course within an average time of 2.06:26. But only if all conditions like the weather, are excellent. However, their finishing times ensure Eindhoven’s marathon is among the ten fastest marathons in the world”, states director Marc Corstjens.

The marathon will take place next Sunday. Of course there are the professionals; but apart from them, over 23,000 amateur-runners will also participate.

Make sure you line the course and applaud them too!

Plug pulled on Muziek op de Dommel

0

Muziek op de Dommel (Music on the Dommel) will end after nine years. The classical music festival held on the Eindhoven TU/e terrain was not able to receive the required funding.

According to the organisation, it is becoming more difficult to get businesses to contribute and sponsor the event. “It is hard work to get the right financing. And in order to keep the festival viable, we would have to do it differently. Much more commercially, with entrance fees, and we do not want that”, Saskia Martens, of Muziek op de Dommel, says.

Muziek op de Dommel began as an initiative of TU/e students and grew into a free festival with 20,000 visitors. Martens: “The goal was always to offer classical music in an accessible way, even to people who normally do not listen to it. If we make it larger and more commercial, the question is whether that goal would still be achieved”.

According to Martens, there were 100 volunteers involved with the festival each year. Four people were working on it throughout the year. “We made this decision with a heavy heart. We have put our hearts and souls into the event for all these years”.

This spring, the organisation already announced that the festival would not go ahead for one year because of problems with the funding. This has now changed into a definitive end. It is not clear if a similar event would return in the future.

Avoid the City Center tonight

0

The Eindhoven Municipality has called on motorists to avoid the town as much as possible tonight (Wednesday).

They are expecting heavy traffic in the city centre. Because of Dutch Design Week (DDW), it has been much busier in the city. The Champions League PSV-Tottenham Hotspur duel will make it even more hectic. This game starts just before 19:00. It is also evening rush hour around this time. The Municipality advises truck and car drivers to take alternate routes when possible.

Supporter areas
Special areas have been designated for PSV and Tottenham Hotspur fans. The Markt and Jan van Lieshoutstraat are to be used by Spurs supporters. Stratumseind, Stationsplein, and Dommelstraat have been appointed to the PSV fans. Portable bathrooms, among other things, have been placed on the Markt. During the afternoon and evening, there is a complete glass and can ban in the city centre.

During the football game, there will be no city buses on PSV-laan. They will drive via Boschdijk. It was agreed with the DDW organisers that the DDW taxis would avoid the area around the stadium before, during, and after the game as much as possible.

At Fontys Sporthogeschool (Fontys Sports College) on Anton Coolenlaan, there is a free P & R. Here you can park between 12.00 and 16.00 and then take the free bus to the city centre.

The two regional bands that will perform are Noire Antidote and Xtort. Noire Antidote makes ‘dark music’. Xtort is in the genres old skool industrial, wave and post-punk. They sing about war, schizophrenia and fear.

Bright minds brought together

A market focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Such a market, the FruitPunch AI Connect, was held recently at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).

About 350 AI enthusiasts, mainly researchers, companies, and students, visited the market to exchange knowledge and to network. “The tickets were sold out”, organiser, Buster Franken, proudly says. The market’s purpose, according to him, was to show that a lot of exciting things were also happening in the Eindhoven region in the field of AI. Local companies do not need only to look abroad.

At the market, drones, a robot, VR (Virtual Reality) glasses, and a self-controlling computer game, among other things, could be admired. It seems at first these are just fun gadgets, but it is much more than that, an inventor says. “Do you have voice recognition on your mobile? A car? AI could already be present in various ways in your daily life”.

For TU/e students, it was a great opportunity to network. “I wanted to see what is possible and how I can contribute to this”, a visitor says. In addition to the market, there were also different lectures and finally, a panel discussion.
