Park Hilaria entrepreneurs staying over in Eindhoven again

The ‘Funfair village’ will be in Eindhoven this year again and no longer in Helmond, as was the case in recent years.

The trailers, caravans and trucks of the funfair entrepreneurs were parked, on previous editions of Park Hilaria, at an area in Helmond. That site is sold by the Helmond Municipality and so a search for a new temporarily domicile began. Mariola Scheepstra, of the organisation of the fair, was looking to find a location as close to the fairground as possible. Sports park Eindhoven Noord in the district of Woensel has been chosen to accommodate the entrepreneurs.

Closer
“We are pleased that this location is closer than the one in Helmond. Last year we already knew that we had to go to a new place”, says an entrepreneur.
The parking lot where the funfair entrepreneurs will be staying, lies in between sports fields, a residential area and a school. The school playground will also be used for temporary settling. The tennis club and the hockey club will together use one parking space for the time being. “All simple solutions that we can come up with during the summer holidays”, says Scheepstra.

Local residents
The “local residents” have been informed via a letter that the ‘Funfair village’ is settling in their neighbourhood. The nearest houses are, however, about a hundred meters from the car park. Starting on Friday, the facilities are constructed on the site. On Monday the first funfair entrepreneurs will arrive.

Former TV presenter to talk about book

0

Former Dutch TV presenter, Sonja Barend, will be a guest in Geldrop at the end of November.

She will join the Literair Café Dommeldal, in Kasteelhoeve. There she will talk about her book, Je ziet me nooit meer terug (You’ll never see me again). In it, she writes about her search for answers.

In the book, Barend tells of how she did not dare ask her mother about her father. She also tells of how her father was taken to Auschwitz in 1942, how her mother remarried, and how she got two brothers and a new father. Her career as a talk show presenter, during which she asked her guests about everything, is also featured in the book.

Prices

The meeting will be on Sunday 24 November at 14:00. Tickets cost €11, with those under 18 paying €2,50.

Do you want to attend more writers’ visits? Annual ticket holders pay only €45 for five lectures. These talks will be presented by writers such as Peter Buwalda, Jaap Robben, Saskia de Coster, and Bregje Hofstede. Please visit the Dommeldal Library’s website for more information. Please note, these lectures are in Dutch.

‘Regular citizens’ show light art for the first time during GLOW 2019

0

For the first time, non-artists at GLOW will also have the opportunity to present their own lighting projects.

The name is called GLOWlabs. It concerns five places along the route of the Eindhoven light art festival. Here ‘normal’ inhabitants of Eindhoven and companies can exhibit light installations. An example is the GGzE, which has developed a light therapy project in conjunction with citizens. “GLOW is for everyone. With these labs we want to show that not only the established artists can have an exhibition, but also the residents of Eindhoven,” says a spokesperson for GLOW.

Source of light

In the center of Eindhoven there will be work from about 35 light artists from home and abroad from Saturday. With the theme ‘The Living Colors’ this year, the organisation wants to delve deeper into the most important part of GLOW: light. This is how artists get started with ‘splitting light’ and looking for the source of light. It became clear earlier this year what the eyecatcher will be: a light show at the Witte Dame.

Number of visitors possibly up

Last year around 750,000 visitors came to the event. The organisation expects this number to be exceeded in the coming week. “That depends on the weather,” the spokesperson explains. Since the start in 2006, GLOW has seen a significant increase in the number of visitors. In the beginning year there were 45,000, so now there are three-quarters of a million.

GLOW starts this Saturday and lasts a week.

Coming Monday, the next fun 30Seconds Night

0

Coming Monday, 10 February 2020, there is the next fun 30Seconds Game Night.

There are many people out there who look for a relaxed and fun way to meet new people. No obligations, no expectations, just play the hilarious game 30Seconds. There is a Dutch and English board game version.

It is fun and cosy, you can get to know new Dutch and international people and have a good time.

In the 30Seconds game you have to describe and guess five names and topics as fast as you can in 30 seconds in teams. The teams change so you play in different groups all the time.

This game is played a lot on mobile phones but at this game night in The Student Hotel they have a board and cards. They have cards in Dutch and cards in English, and you can switch during the evening to meet different people and try both languages. It is great fun, hilarious and you get to meet new local and international people as they welcome all.

It is easy to join, you don’t need experience or to do anything: just turn up in ‘The Commons’ cafe in The Student Hotel Eindhoven and you will be welcomed by the hosts.

It’s for free, and when you register you even get a free drink.
Register here via the OUTtogether platform by clicking the green ‘Schrijf je in’ button.
Doors open from 19:30h, they will start playing at 20:00h on 10 February 2020.

This game night is organised as a cooperation between SamenUITagenda, OUTtogethercalendar, The Student Hotel and Eindhoven News, because these parties want you to meet each other live and have a good time!

Bad weather did not dampen Carnaval mood

0

Even though the weather was disappointing, the regional hospitality industry is satisfied with this year’s Carnaval. After five days of celebration, the carnival celebrants can relax, and the pubs can be cleaned up.

After Chiara and Dennis, the other storm called Ellen pummeled the Netherlands during Carnaval. Many parades were cancelled or postponed this year. “Because of the bad weather, people came to the city a bit later than usual,” says Jan Witmer, regional chairman of the Royal Catering Association. “But everything inside is even cosier.”

Storm and rain lead to empty streets but fuller pubs. “The real carnival goer cannot be stopped by bad weather,” says Jimmy Meijer, owner of the Proost and Dependance pubs in Breda. “Locals in Breda were looking forward to this year’s Carnaval. Their enthusiasm can be seen from how much they drink. The turnover is good; that says it all.”

Issues with fake money

Many pubs were alert for counterfeit money during Carnaval. According to Witmer, getting this fake money problem is unavoidable. “Where there are large groups of people, fake money always appears. Then you have got a few glitches here and there.”

Many hospitality business owners have neighbourhood Whatsapp groups. If fake money shows up at a pub, they immediately sound the alarm. “On Thursday, a pub sent a message that someone had been caught with counterfeit money,” Jimmy says. “Then everybody is on high alert right away.”

DAF Museum to open in July

0

The DAF Museum will reopen on 1 July, the institution announced.

It reopened in November 2019. The museum, however, closed in mid-March again and remained so more than three months.

In April, the museum announced they’d use the closure to complete certain work. That work included lighting in the museum’s new wing. The museum also said the corona crisis wouldn’t cause financial problems for them.

Opening a month later

The museum states they’re not taking safety for granted with the opening. Museums were actually allowed to open on 1 June. But the DAF Museum deliberately chose not to open until a month later.

The museum used that time to corona-proof everything. They’ve set up a one-way route, and there’s enough space for visitors to keep the required 1,5m distance. Visitors can reserve tickets via the museum website from 24 June.

Tickets cost between €5 and €10 with free admittance for children under the age of five.

First Maker Faire participants announced

0

The Eindhoven Maker Faire organisers have announced the event’s first participants.

This year, the Maker Faire will take place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September. It will be held in the Klokgebouw on Strijp-S. The Eindhoven Maker Faire will go ahead this year but in a compact form.

This year, visitors can buy tickets online for one of the three timeslots per day. Tickets, for two-hour slots, cost €6 for children between six and 17 or €12.50 for adults. Kids under five have free entry, but tickets must still be reserved for them.

Robots, racing cars, and more

During the event, visitors can build robots with BYOR or their own racing car with Nerby Derby. Or they can create and play their own video game with Die Nebelschwingen. At the Sub/liminal soundscapes they can even play with sound frequencies in an interactive installation.

If you wish to participate in Makers Faire, there’s still a chance. But you need to be quick. The deadline for submissions is on 23 August.

Please note, the registration procedure is in Dutch only.
