Cultural Prize nominees announced

0

The ten nominees for the Cultuurprijs (Cultural Prize) have been selected by the Cultuurraad (Culture Council).

For the Stimuleringsprijs (Stimulation Prize), Modulab, PLASMA, Wall Street, Warehouse of Innovation, and Wildpark have been chosen. Agnes van Dijk, Angelo Martinus, Miggs de Bruijn, The Ruggeds, and United Cowboys have been nominated for the Waarderingsprijs (Appreciation Prize).

A total of 45 different institutions, creators, and initiatives were nominated. Together with the Cultuurraad, Chairman Maria van der Aalsvoort paid particular attention to these nominees’ added value for Eindhoven.

What do they mean for the city’s culture?

“This year, too, we as the Cultuurraad were mainly guided by what the nominees mean for the cultural field – which initiatives, makers, and institutions surprise and inspire”, Maria says. “For both the Stimuleringsprijs and the Waarderingsprijs, we have selected parties that enrich the cultural field of Eindhoven in a special way”.

The Stimuleringsprijs is awarded to an institution, creator or initiative that has existed for less than five years and holds particular promise for culture in Eindhoven. The Waarderingsprijs is given to a creator or institution with a proven track record.

The Eindhoven Cultuurprijs will be awarded for the third time this year. A jury will choose the final winners. The prize consists of a sum of EUR7,500. In addition to both prizes, a Rabo Publieksprijs (Audience Prize), worth EUR7,500, will be awarded too.

Until 30 September, people can vote for their favourite nominee on the Eindhoven Cultural Prize’s website. The prize will be awarded on 30 October during a festive presentation in the Effenaar.

A literal house-party for this year’s King’s Day

0

This year’s King’s Day will be celebrated in unusual style. As per original plans, the king was to celebrate it in Maastricht but will now stay home. Church bells, a toast from home, and special televised programmes for 27 April.

With the ‘intelligent lockdown’, ICU patient numbers continue to decline, but it’s too soon to reopen festivals and celebrations. In line with this, the coming King’s Day will be celebrated digitally. The usual line of events such as the royal games, flea markets, and open-air concerts will all be cancelled. To contain people’s disappointment, the Orange Societies’ Association (KBOV) has planned an entertaining day with all-day TV broadcasts.

It starts with the ringing of the church bells at 09:45 followed by a special NOS programme with a look back to King’s Days from previous years. At 12:00, an e-version of flea and clothes markets will start. Children have also been invited to send a digital letter congratulating the king.

They should describe their life in this corona crisis too. The letters will be presented to the king on his birthday in the late afternoon. At 16:00, viewers will be asked to raise a toast to the, then, 53-year-old King Willem Alexander.

Artwork from local artists to go on display at Eindhoven Airport

0

Eindhoven Airport has announced plans to exhibit local artists’ work in its forecourt. The exhibition is part of a new collaboration with the Van Abbemuseum.

The aim of the project is to provide a platform for local art, culture and innovation. To begin with, the airport will display three showcases by the Eindhoven-based designer, Piet Hein Eek.

For many international visitors to the Netherlands, Eindhoven Airport is the first and last part of Eindhoven that they see. Organisers therefore hope that the exhibition will leave a lasting impression of the city.

Revamp

The exhibition forms part of the larger initiative to revamp several areas of the airport. A new multi storey car park was built at the end of 2019. In addition, the construction of Airport Boulevard, a multi-purpose building between the car park and the airport containing food stalls and green spaces, is also being finalised.

Unknown launch date

When the exhibition will be launched is still unknown. An airport spokesperson indicated that they will probably wait until passenger numbers increase again after the coronavirus crisis.

Attention to each other

The festival is supported by the Eindhoven municipality since it fits in this period of #attentiontoeachother. This period focus on the topic of togetherness and cohesion in the city.

Councilor for Culture & Design, Monique List-de Roos: “The cultural sector has been hit very hard by the corona crisis. Cultural institutions still have limited visitors and creators see a large part of their assignments lost. Fortunately, I also see many creative ways in which the sector manages to bring its offer to its audience. #eindhovenfestival’s initiative is a great example. Cultural institutions and creators, together with enormous enthusiasm and within a short time frame, have realized a complete digital offer. Young and old can enjoy this during the Christmas holidays. Culture can also connect people online. And especially in these times, that connection and attention to each other are very important. As a municipality, we are happy to contribute.”

#eindhovenfestival is the reuslt of close collaborations from various cultural institutions. The festival intend to add more experience and fun to the Christmas period and meanwhile support the event creators.

The program is available and the tickets are for sale on the website. A festival ticket for all 14 days costs €5. Large venues may open conditionally

Several large venues can open their doors to the public again this month.

That’s following a government announcement. On Tuesday, the cabinet said it’s starting pilot projects to test accessibility tests practical effects. So, stadiums, venues and casinos in the country may reopen.

In the region, this concerns the Muziekgebouw, Natlab, Parktheater, Effenaar, and Jack Casino. PSV is also allowed to welcome fans again during the next home match against FC Groningen. That’s after months of lockdown.

Venues can hold some events under certain conditions. For example, visitors must have proof of a negative COVID-19 test the cabinet has announced.

Music, sport, and gambling

From 16 to 18 April, the Muziekgebouw (350), Natlab (42) and Parktheater (250) are allowed to admit visitors. On 24 April, it’s Jacks Casino’s turn, with 350 visitors. On that day, PSV is permitted to receive 4,000 supporters for the game against FC Groningen.

For the other professional football club in the city, FC Eindhoven, a maximum of 450 fans applies on 30 April. The first division club then plays against FC Den Bosch. That weekend, 130 people can also visit the Effenaar. The Eindhoven music venue will let people who want to attend an event know in advance what to do.

“It’s good news, but it really surprised us,” PSV commercial director, Frans Janssen, says. “We’re happy about this. But, it naturally raises many questions.”

“For our fans, but certainly for us too. We’ll now consult with the authorities concerned. Then we’ll communicate how we deal with this situation.”
