Come eat OUTtogether at the Library

One of the most important things people need to do when they are in a new city is to connect with other people. OUTtogether/SamenUITagenda does just that.

This start-up initiative wants to connect people in Eindhoven. The library wants that too. That is why OUTtogether and the library are organising an evening together. ‘Eating Together’ will be held on 28 June in the Library Cafe.

OUTtogether is an online platform and offers ample opportunities for people to find fun activities in the city. It also allows people to place their own activities, inviting people to join them. The library, in turn, offers a space in which to meet new people. These two organisations have now joined forces.

Every last Friday of the month people can eat together in the Library Cafe. While enjoying a delicious Indonesian rice table, OUTtogether will explain their website and people can get started right away. This is an opportunity to meet people on the digital platform, and right there on the spot.

This event will take place on Friday, 28 June from 18:30 to 19:30. It will be held in the Eindhoven Library’s Cafe in de Witte Dame, 22 Emmasingel. The meal costs €12.50. Reserve your seat at www.bibliotheekeindhoven.nl/programma.

Those who do not want to join in but want information, free of charge, about the OUTtogether initiative are welcome to come by at 19:30.

10th Fete de la Musique in Eindhoven

This year will be the tenth time that the Fete de la Musique will take place in Eindhoven.

This festival has grown into an international day of music. The event in Eindhoven is but one of hundreds of these free music festivals taking place all over the world. From Berlin to Albania and France, where it originated.

In Eindhoven, this free event will be held on Friday, 21 June, in the Globaaldorp in Dommel Street. This city garden is located between the Inkijkmuseum and the Effenaar. And this year, again, there is a range of extraordinary musicians on board.

These include Cornelis Lemair and his Washboard Stringband and Musicians Without Borders. Sander Borgers will present his new work too. Many acts from Amsterdam, Utrecht, as well as the Eindhoven region, await festival goers.

The programme begins at 17:00 and continues until after 22:00. The event is organised by the Inkijkmuseum, in partnership with the Effenaar, Stroomhuis, Rararadio, as well as friends and many musicians.

Bright minds brought together

A market focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Such a market, the FruitPunch AI Connect, was held recently at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).

About 350 AI enthusiasts, mainly researchers, companies, and students, visited the market to exchange knowledge and to network. “The tickets were sold out”, organiser, Buster Franken, proudly says. The market’s purpose, according to him, was to show that a lot of exciting things were also happening in the Eindhoven region in the field of AI. Local companies do not need only to look abroad.

At the market, drones, a robot, VR (Virtual Reality) glasses, and a self-controlling computer game, among other things, could be admired. It seems at first these are just fun gadgets, but it is much more than that, an inventor says. “Do you have voice recognition on your mobile? A car? AI could already be present in various ways in your daily life”.

For TU/e students, it was a great opportunity to network. “I wanted to see what is possible and how I can contribute to this”, a visitor says. In addition to the market, there were also different lectures and finally, a panel discussion.

Walking the Southern waterline: 11 Brabant cities defended by water

For centuries in Brabant, water has been both an enemy and a friend. Over hundreds of years, locals have built waterlines and used the water as a defence against attacks.

The longest, oldest, and most used waterline in the Netherlands is the Zuiderwaterlinie (Southern waterline) which runs right through Brabant. In the coming weeks, you can see it up close and learn how that waterline worked. From 19 to 29 June, you can walk through all eleven fortified cities with Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie.

The routes take you on a tour through 450 years of Brabant military history. The Southern waterline took on its shape and form at the end of the Middle Ages. Over the years, people added defences, which strengthened the original line. Up to and including the Cold War, the Southern waterline remained important for Brabant’s protection.

Get-together

For those who want to do the 20km version, the first stage of Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie starts in Bergen op Zoom on today (Wednesday), 19 June. There is also a shorter route every day of approximately 10km. You walk this route in a group with a guide. Whatever distance you choose, everyone is welcome to join get-together after each day’s walk. In the past, walkers have sung songs together or watched a dance performance.

The eleventh and final stage, on Saturday, 29 June, leads to Grave. That day you can opt for an extra long, 40km route is may be a nice option if this is the only day that you walk. Participation every day is not mandatory. You can walk one route or multiple routes. The choice is yours as to how much you, and which routes, you decide to walk. Participating in the Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie is free, but you must register.

Hard or soft ‘g’

While walking, you will discover that the Southern waterline is not only an important military heritage but that it is also a cultural border. Between north and south, Roman Catholic and Protestant, and the hard and soft “g”. Presenter Björn van der Doelen showcases the history of the Southern waterline in a brand new series. He encounters wonderful stories, sometimes about those differences but especially about cooperation to defend Brabant. The first episode can be seen on Sunday, 7 July, on Omroep Brabant.

FeelGood Market with an international flair

Sunday, 16 June, will see the well-known FeelGood Market get an international feel. The I am not a Tourist Expat Fair will be held at the same place – in and around the Klokgebouw on Strijp S.

The FeelGood Market will, as it does every third Sunday of the month, have a wide variety of unique products on sale. But, this time, there will be all kinds of extra activities too. Arts and crafts for the kids, foods from all over the world, and live music, to name but a few. There will also be activities including free sports and games as well as free skateboarding demos and workshops.

The I am not a Tourist Expat Fair is aimed at introducing expats in the city to most everything they need to make a life for themselves in Eindhoven. The event will feature more than 50 exhibitors, along with workshops and presentations. Experts in a wide range of areas, including housing, taxes, and schooling will be on hand.

The fun starts at noon and will continue until 18:00. Although entrance to the FeelGood Market is free, you will need to pay €5 for the Expat Fair. However, as a bonus, you and your family can get your free tickets for the I am not a Tourist Expat Fair, courtesy of Eindhoven News, here.
