‘Regular citizens’ show light art for the first time during GLOW 2019

0

For the first time, non-artists at GLOW will also have the opportunity to present their own lighting projects.

The name is called GLOWlabs. It concerns five places along the route of the Eindhoven light art festival. Here ‘normal’ inhabitants of Eindhoven and companies can exhibit light installations. An example is the GGzE, which has developed a light therapy project in conjunction with citizens. “GLOW is for everyone. With these labs we want to show that not only the established artists can have an exhibition, but also the residents of Eindhoven,” says a spokesperson for GLOW.

Source of light

In the center of Eindhoven there will be work from about 35 light artists from home and abroad from Saturday. With the theme ‘The Living Colors’ this year, the organisation wants to delve deeper into the most important part of GLOW: light. This is how artists get started with ‘splitting light’ and looking for the source of light. It became clear earlier this year what the eyecatcher will be: a light show at the Witte Dame.

Number of visitors possibly up

Last year around 750,000 visitors came to the event. The organisation expects this number to be exceeded in the coming week. “That depends on the weather,” the spokesperson explains. Since the start in 2006, GLOW has seen a significant increase in the number of visitors. In the beginning year there were 45,000, so now there are three-quarters of a million.

GLOW starts this Saturday and lasts a week.

parkrun officials visit Eindhoven

0

A team of parkrun officials visited Eindhoven last week. It was part of a larger tour of potential new parkrun venues across the Netherlands.

parkrun is a weekly timed event where participants can walk, jog or run a 5 kilometre route in a local park. It is free of charge and organised entirely by volunteers.

Founded in London 15 years ago, parkrun now exists in 21 countries worldwide. In September, parkrun announced its plans to launch new routes in the Netherlands in spring 2020.

As part of their visit, the parkrun team met with the volunteers who are designing and testing potential routes.

‘We had a fantastic visit to the Netherlands,’ says Deri Thomas, parkrun’s European Territory Manager. ‘We met some great teams and saw some stunning potential parkrun venues. Eindhoven was right up there and we’re excited to get started early in the spring.’

The volunteers also expressed their excitement. Jesus González, a wireless engineer at Philips, says, ‘after enjoying parkrun in other countries, we can finally say that parkrun will take place in the Netherlands’. González also says that the parkrun representatives ‘were very positive about the park and the surroundings. We are looking forward to it’.

Eindhoven’s parkrun event is expected to launch in late February or early March 2020 at Karpendonkse Plas.

30Seconds board game nights are on again

0

Due to popular demand, the 30Seconds Game Night will continue this fall and winter 2019-2020.

Every second Monday of the month you can join:
11 November 2019
9 December 2019
13 January 2020
10 February 2020
9 March 2020 (cancelled)
13 April
11 May

Last fall and winter the game nights were very well visited and many people got to know each other. A mixed group of students, employees, spouses and families, Dutch and international, male and female, young and old had a great time while playing the board game 30Seconds.

In the 30Seconds game you have to describe and guess five names and topics as fast as you can in 30 seconds in teams. The teams change so you play in different groups all the time.

This game is played a lot on mobile phones but at this game night in The Student Hotel they have a board and cards. They have cards in Dutch and cards in English, and you can switch during the evening to meet different people and to try both languages. It is great fun, hilarious and you get to meet new local and international people as they welcome all.

It is easy to join, you don’t need experience or to do anything: just turn up in ‘The Commons’ cafe in The Student Hotel Eindhoven and you will be welcomed by the hosts.

It’s for free, and when you register you even get a free drink.
Register here via the OUTtogether platform by clicking the green ‘Schrijf je in’ button.

Doors open from 19:30h, they will start playing at 20:00h.

This game night is organised as a cooperation between SamenUITagenda, OUTtogethercalendar, The Student Hotel and Eindhoven News, because these parties want you to meet each other and have a good time!

Former TV presenter to talk about book

0

Former Dutch TV presenter, Sonja Barend, will be a guest in Geldrop at the end of November.

She will join the Literair Café Dommeldal, in Kasteelhoeve. There she will talk about her book, Je ziet me nooit meer terug (You’ll never see me again). In it, she writes about her search for answers.

In the book, Barend tells of how she did not dare ask her mother about her father. She also tells of how her father was taken to Auschwitz in 1942, how her mother remarried, and how she got two brothers and a new father. Her career as a talk show presenter, during which she asked her guests about everything, is also featured in the book.

Prices

The meeting will be on Sunday 24 November at 14:00. Tickets cost €11, with those under 18 paying €2,50.

Do you want to attend more writers’ visits? Annual ticket holders pay only €45 for five lectures. These talks will be presented by writers such as Peter Buwalda, Jaap Robben, Saskia de Coster, and Bregje Hofstede. Please visit the Dommeldal Library’s website for more information. Please note, these lectures are in Dutch.

An Ode to Van Gogh at Glow

0

A special tribute to Vincent van Gogh will be held this year during the GLOW Light Art Festival. The festival will join forces with Van Gogh Brabant and the Van Gogh Museum.

The Eindhoven light artist, Hugo Vrijdag, created the artwork together with the Qinhuai Lantern Festival in Nanjing, China. It is the second time these two light festivals have collaborated. The work will be placed on Lichtplein. It represents a sea of sunflowers waving in the wind. The sounds of crickets and swallows will be recreated. Also, the sound of the common swift is characteristic of Vrijdag.

The sunflowers used for the work are, in fact, lanterns, made according to Chinese tradition. After the work has been shown at GLOW, it will go to Nanjing Light Festival, which will be held in January. The artwork then returns to the Netherlands for an exhibition in Amsterdam.

DDW to work more with foreign design schools

The Dutch Design Week (DDW) has said the organisation would be working more closely with foreign universities and design schools in the coming years.

There is already cooperation with several foreign schools, such as a design school in London. This will, however, be further expanded and strengthened in the coming years.

“They can be design schools and universities from all over the world from all continents. We are more likely to ‘scout’ abroad for this purpose. What are the relevant social themes and how do design schools and universities respond to them?”, says Edwin Schenk on behalf of DDW.

Must fit in with DDW’s DNA

The search abroad should ultimately result in the work of, as yet unknown, talented designers being shown during the DDW in the coming years. Work with a social impact that “fits in with the DNA of the DDW”.

There has already been an increase in the number of foreign exhibitors in recent years during the DDW. These come not only from international programmes but also from the technical universities in Eindhoven, Enschede, Wageningen, and Delft.

Night of the Night 2019 – City of Light in the dark

0

Various companies in Eindhoven, including Philips, and the High Tech Campus turned off their lights on Saturday. They did this as part of the 15th edition of Night of the night. It was to draw attention to global warming, energy-saving and light pollution. Night of the night is an initiative by nature and environmental federations.

In addition to Philips and the High Tech Campus, NXP, TMC, Shimano, Brunel and Signify also took part in the initiative. According to activists, the Netherlands is one of the most lit up countries. This results in large CO2 emissions. That is why the Eindhoven companies have united under #stapindegroenerichting (#astepinthegreendirection). And as evidence of their commitment to this cause, they joined the national Night of the Night campaign.

The organizers of Night of the night hope that individuals, companies and municipalities will switch to sustainable lighting and reduce light usage, especially if and when it is not needed.
