Anniek named best junior pancake baker

Eindhoven’s Anniek Verbunt has won the title of ‘Best Junior Pancake Baker in the Netherlands’. Under the watchful eye of a jury, the 9-year-old defeated two other candidates in the final.

The jury consisted of six grandfathers and grandmothers during the final in Veenendaal. These gourmets were unanimous after the final battle, in which the three finalists had to show what they had to offer. “Anniek is the ideal junior pancake baker. The skills to bake the tastiest, round pancakes and peace and concentration behind the stove. She is also an expert at baking the ‘normal’ pancake and her special pancake with marinated apples and raisins. ”

Starting signal

With the title in her pocket, Anniek can now give the starting signal for the national pancake festival next week, together with the TV baker Cas Wolters, which will take place at her own school, De Achtbaan in Eindhoven. On that day, around 85,000 students from primary schools throughout the country will work for the elderly. More than 1,700 schools are expected to participate.

The competition and the national day are an initiative of the companies Tefal, Blueband and Koopmans.

Park Hilaria can receive 450,000 visitors with extra security guards

0

Despite the corona rules still in force, Park Hilaria expects to be able to receive 450,000 visitors next week. However, more security guards and ‘crowd managers’ are being deployed to steer the Eindhoven fair in the right direction.

With the extra security guards and slightly larger site, the organisation hopes to create extra space for queues. Visitors can then keep sufficient distance from each other. Besides, special pressure gauges and counting cameras would track whether there are too many people inside. The website shows whether it is a suitable time to come. “We are calling on people to spread out. It is always busy at the beginning of the evening. We want to ask people to also use the afternoon”, explains Mariola Scheepstra of organiser Eindhoven247.

Park Hilaria is regarded as a so-called ‘flow-through event’. This means that large groups of people are allowed under a number of conditions. The terraces on the site may therefore also be open half an hour longer than those at the catering industry in the city centre.

Close

If the Hilaria site becomes crowded, the organisation would intervene. “Then we close the entrances for a while until things have calmed down again.”

3 Uurkes Vurraf event no longer in Hotel Pullman Eindhoven Cocagne

0

Carnival celebration always feels like a fresh start for welcoming the warm spring season. 3 Uurkes Vurraf is a carnival event in Brabant that is conducted every year in the Hotel Pullman Cocagne. The hotel has decided that, after 28 years of hosting, it will no longer host the event due to the strict corona measures. Omroep Brabant is looking for a new venue to conduct the 3 Uurkes Vurraf event in February 2022.

‘3 Uurkes’ is an initiative of the regional broadcaster Omroep Brabant and has been regarded as the official kick-off of carnival in Brabant province since 1993. A wide range of artists performs at the event. It is broadcast live on TV and the internet each year, attracting more than a million viewers from all over the country.

Corona measures

Hotel Pullman Cocagne has hosted the event for the past 28 years. Due to the strict corona measures, the hotel has decided not to host the 2022 event. Omroep Brabant reports that the strict requirements in organising an event make it difficult for the hotels to host. “With the many uncertainties in the world and the increasingly strict requirements for events, we have unfortunately decided that the risk of setting up a tent for carnival is too high,” explains Pullman hotel deputy director Jurriaan van der Valk.

Van der Valk says he decided with pain in his heart. “On behalf of the entire Pullman team, we would like to thank all carnival enthusiasts who have ever been to ‘3 Uurkes Vurraf’ for the great atmosphere.”

Radio party

The collaboration with ‘Cocagne’ started when 3 Uurkes Vurraf was still a radio program. In 2007, the event was converted from a radio program to a live television program. More than 1600 enthusiastic carnival revellers used to gather for the event. A large space was required to accommodate such a crowd, so the event was conducted in a huge tent in the car park area of the Pullman hotel.

Omroep Brabant understands the decision of the hotel but finds it very unfortunate. Omroep Brabant will look for a new location so that 3 Uurkes Vurraf 2022 can continue.

Going green with whipping out paving stones in Geldrop-Mierlo

Under the motto ‘Tegel eruit, groen erin: De eerste tegel telt!’ (‘stone out, green in: the first stone counts!’) Frans Stravers of the Municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo recently collected the first paving stones from a resident on a cargo bike and exchanged them for a plant.

The municipality hereby underlines the importance of the campaign to green Geldrop-Mierlo. Various initiatives have been started: for example, 250 square metres of paving will be removed from Kersenstraat in Mierlo and greenery will be created in its place. “We also removed stones in Geldrop. At Olmenhof, a paved square has been partly converted into a park”.

The NK Tegelwippen (Dutch whipping out paving stone championships) take place until 31 October, 2024. Geldrop-Mierlo municipality is also participating, Stravers says. “Last year we removed 1,277 stones. And we want to improve this in 2024. Everyone can participate by removing stones in their own garden and replacing them with grass, flower beds, trees and facade gardens”.

Stones in exchange for plants

During the campaign, residents who remove at least eleven stones (one square metre, ed.) from their front or backyard will receive a gift. Anyone who registers at www.nktegelwippen.nl and then takes their stones to Milieustraat (recycling centre) to hand them in for free will receive a voucher. This allows you to select a free plant at GroenRijk Geldrop.

And from 19 April to 29 April and from 31 May to 9 June, the stones can also be returned directly to GroenRijk Geldrop. Stravers: “All people have to do is register via the NK Tegelwippen website. With the confirmation of receipt they can then go to the garden centre”.

Second edition Festival Smitske announced

0

Dance festival Smitske has announced a second edition. The first one was held earlier this year, when the Eindhoven DJ La Fuente performed, among others.

The idea comes from comedian Gerrie Smits, who actually organised the festival last year as a joke to give his performance some publicity. The festival, which at the time was limited to 750 people, was a success and will now be continued.

The first edition was held at Evoluon, but the organisers have now booked another location. On 25 June 2022, the E3 Strand (beach) in Eersel will be the setting for the second edition. Names that have already been booked are dj Quintino, Jay Hardway and Retrovision.

No skating rink in town, but tall gift tower

Anyone who has looked around Eindhoven’s 18 Septemberplein has probably noticed something. Since this week there is a real gift tower. With the initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (foundation downtown Eindhoven, SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something else than the traditional Christmas market. In this way, the SBE still wants to end the year in a festive way with the “Wrap up the Year” campaign. “In Eindhoven, we are always a bit stubborn. The city will be wrapped up with Eindhoven gift paper this December, so to speak”, Mariette Vetter of SBE explains.

Eyecatcher
According to Vetter, the ten-metre-high gift tower financed by entrepreneurs themselves is therefore intended as an eye-catcher to direct people to the stores. “You can see the structure standing from a great distance, for example when coming from the train station. You can’t go inside the tower, although two parcels contain viewing boxes with a winter landscape”.

Skating rink
Within the “Wrap up the Year” campaign, there is no room for a Christmas market and ice skating rink. “We thought that was a bit outdated and therefore not appropriate for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. Something we wanted to implement before, but was resisted by the corona virus”, Vetter said.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that of course plays a role. “An ice rink naturally guzzles energy, so we don’t have that cost this year. Although we are putting more money into the mood lighting than other years because of the energy crisis”.

Enduring Philips/PSV bond on show

Eendracht maakt macht – Unity creates power – that’s the name of a temporary exhibition in the Philips Museum. The exhibit is about the many years of ties between Philips and PSV.

It’s the first exhibition visitors have been able to see since the museum was closed by the anti-corona measures – the intertwining of sports and technology’s typical of Philips, the famous Eindhoven company. Museum curator, Sergio Derks, explains how these ties were formed.

“It all started with Anton Philips. He began to really put sport on the map within the company”. PSV was born in 1913, out of a big party to celebrate the Netherlands’ 100 years of independence.

Matches continued

At that party, hosted by the light bulb factory, sports events were organised for Philips employees. It was such a success that those matches continued and took the form of a club – the Philips Sports Association. Since then, the interplay of technology and sport has yielded all sorts of great things for the city – for residents, the company, and later also for football.

The players benefit, for example, from the excellent Philips lights that illuminate the football pitch. The 1988 Champions League has been a highlight. “The real cup is in the PSV museum,” says Derks.

“But we have something that is not so unique but almost as good – a hologram of the Europa Cup 1. We combined this cup with the PSV logo and that images of that match’s defining moment – when that goal was stopped”.

A very special object

The hologram attracts quite a lot of attention. But still, it’s not the exhibit’s showpiece. That honour belongs to a different object –  a seat from the PSV stadium. Sergio Derks explains, “It is Mr Frits’ (Philips, ed.) chair – a great addition.

“That man’s been so important to the club. As a five-year-old boy in a sailor’s suit, he kicked off the first match. And in 2005, a few months before his death, he received the championship trophy from Mark van Bommel”. Van Bommel had won the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League for PSV.

People who want to see the exhibition have to book, online, in advance.

Park Hilaria remains a crowd pleaser

0

Park Hilaria 2023 had a wet start, but in the end many visitors found their way to the temporary amusement park on the Kennedylaan in Eindhoven. Thanks to the dry weather and pleasant temperatures, the second half of the week was considerably busier.

The 21st edition of Park Hilaria offered a wide range of attractions for young and old. The big spectacular attractions, such as the Entertainer, the Chaos and the Eclipse, did well with thrillseekers, while families with (young) children had a great time on the special children’s attractions and at the outdoor cafés.

The organisers are very pleased with how it went. “This edition too proved that Park Hilaria is a great concept. For ten days, visitors, volunteers and operators enjoyed the wonderful, convivial atmosphere and we were able to surprise our guests again with new attractions. That’s what we do it for,” said Mariola Scheepstra of Eindhoven247.

Next year, Park Hilaria will take place from 2 to 11 August 2024. Then, the temporary amusement park, including live entertainment, will once again take place at Jonh F Kennedylaan in Eindhoven.

AI-driven restaurant Bunkr preparing for a grand opening

The long-awaited day is fast approaching. The Bunkr, a restaurant controlled by Artificial Intelligence will finally open on September 1.

Robin Vromans is one of the inspired co-owners in this exciting adventure. He comes from Valkenswaard, from a hospitality family. He started his first job in the hospitality industry at the age of fifteen. He was educated at De Rooi Pannen in Eindhoven.

He worked at the Markt in Valkenswaard and at Van der Valk catering. Then he worked at Marquis Catering and even abroad, such as Monaco. Everywhere in Eindhoven he has walked with a tray, he says. He also gave bbq workshops on the Green Egg together with his brother-in-law.

Artificial intelligence

Vromans has been researching how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in the culinary world for some time now. His interest in data and what you can do with it was further aroused when he met Tom Habraken of Anzu, a local company that applies AI and develops understandable tools.

When Youri Doreleijers, another catering entrepreneur, came into the picture, the room was quickly decided. Youri also owns the restaurants Luzt, Lighttown Brewers and the Genneper Parken pavilion in Eindhoven.

Ideal place

Together they wanted to do something new and restaurant Bunkr, under the Bunkertoren, was the perfect place for it. They want to make it the first AI-driven restaurant in the Netherlands, a place where eating really becomes an experience. Artificial intelligence is sometimes used in the hospitality industry, but not yet in the extensive way that Vromans and Dorelijers envision.

Bunkr is all about technology. This technology helps guests find their table and suggests what to eat. When you enter, you will receive an explanation via a screen and you will see where you can sit. Guests must download an app to enjoy this experience. This ensures that practical matters are well organized and the staff has more time for the guests.

No staff concerns

Vromans is not worried about too few staff. His kitchen brigade is complete, including an employee with experience in 3D food printing. For serving guests, there are two students who study AI at Eindhoven University of Technology. Only an assistant manager is still missing, but that does not worry Vromans for the time being.

Starting September 1, Bunkr will be open from Friday to Monday. Until then, the technology will be carefully tested and any adjustments will be made.
