Int. Women’s Day: Everyone’s a hero

0

Friday, 8 March is International Women’s Day. The Eindhoven library is planning an exciting programme – ‘Everyone’s a hero!’ – for women. This is being done in cooperation with the Dutch non-profit organisation, Women Inc’s, ambassador Carien Kirkels.

The speakers will be Maleka Bent Jamaa of The Female Factory and Ineke Hurkmans, from the Jump Movement. Maleka has been working with women from all walks of life for over 20 years. It is her mission to show women that they already possess all of the power and wisdom they need. As an empowerment-coach and speaker, focussing on women, it is Maleka’s goal to create awareness and connection.

Ineke Hurkmans will get people to ‘Jump’. This is an easy, accessible method of conversation that helps move people towards their own or collective ambitions. Participants will ‘jump together’. Jessica Bartels, Eindhoven’s City Poet of Eindhoven, will also be there to present some of her poems and showcase her poetry skills.

The programme starts with a vegetarian meal at 18:00. This will cost €12,50 and people will need to register seperately for this. Tickets for the ‘Everyone’s a Hero’ event cost €3, while a meal and event combo is €15. Tickets are available here. The evening begins officially at 18:45 and will end at 22:00.

This event will be in Dutch but is also open for non-Dutch speakers. The hand-out of the reading and ‘Jump’ exercises will be available in English.

CDA and Ouderen Appèl want temporary emergency bridge to Stratumseind

The little bridge over the Dommel between Stratumseind and Stratumsedijk will be closed for over a month. Ouderen Appèl Hart voor Eindhoven (elderly appeal heart for Eindhoven), (OAHvE) and the CDA (christian democrats) now want an emergency bridge to replace it.

Earlier, OAHvE asked council questions about the work on the little bridge because the group fears it will cost hospitality entrepreneurs money. Indeed, just during Glow and Dutch Design Week, the Stratumseind is now poorly accessible.

The groups would have preferred that the bridge could remain open in the weekend, something that entrepreneurs on Stratumseind would also have counted on. Therefore, the groups also want to know if something went wrong in the communication.

In addition, visitors to the major events taking place before December would have to detour at least 300 metres to get to Stratumseind, CDA and OAHvE write.

Finally, the groups report that, as far as they are concerned, an emergency bridge should be constructed. After all, that would have been done before.

No skating rink in the city this year: tall present tower instead

Anyone who has looked around the 18 Septemberplein in Eindhoven has probably noticed something. This week, a real present tower has been erected. With this initiative, entrepreneurs’ association Stichting Binnenstad Eindhoven (SBE) wants to attract more people to the city centre.

It is something different than the traditional Christmas market. The SBE wants to end the year in a festive way with the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign. “In Eindhoven we like to do things a bit differently. This December, the city has been wrapped with Eindhoven gift paper” said Mariette Vetter of SBE.

Eye catcher

The ten-metre-high present tower, which was financed by the entrepreneurs themselves, is intended, according to Vetter, as an eye-catcher to guide people to the shops. “You can see the structure from a great distance, for example when you come from the station. You can’t go inside the tower, but diorama boxes with a winter landscape can be viewed within two of the presents.”

Skating rink

Within the ‘Wrap up the Year’ campaign there is no room for a Christmas market and an ice rink. “We thought an ice rink was a bit outdated and therefore not suitable for Eindhoven. The Christmas atmosphere will certainly be there with lighting, colourful shop windows, a music programme and other activities in the city. This was something we wanted to do before, but was postponed due to corona virus.” said Vetter.

According to Vetter, the energy crisis has nothing to do with these innovative plans, although that does of course play a role. “An ice rink uses copious amounts of energy, so we won’t have those costs this year. Although we are putting more money into mood lighting than in previous years due to the energy crisis.”

Record number of visitors for preHistorisch Dorp

The preHistorisch Dorp (prehistoric village) in Eindhoven received a record number of visitors last season. The counter came to a total of 72,000 guests.

That is an increase of forty per cent over last year. Although 2021 was a corona year, even then the preHistorisch Dorp as an open-air museum did not have to complain about visitor numbers.

Crowd pullers
Especially for the anniversary year, there were themes from different periods of history. Yvonne Lammers of the museum looks back. “The big crowd pullers were Heksia, the event for witches, and Vikingfest. That archaeology is alive and that there is a lot of interest in it was evident from the reactions of visitors after their visit to the new ArcheoFactory”.

PSV starts new season with Super-cup match in Eindhoven

0

PSV, the proud Dutch football champions will kick-off their season with a match for the Dutch super-cup, against cupwinner Feyenoord, just before the regular Dutch league starts. As Dutch champion, they are allowed to play it at their home turf, the Philips stadium, on Saturday August 4th at 18.00.

While the World-Cup is getting into the final stages, PSV is working hard behind the scenes to build the organization and their squad to make an attempt to reach the play-offs of the Champions League and to prolong their Dutch league title. Its been a turbulent couple of months for PSV, several important staff and even head- coach Philip Cocu, got lured away by teams from wealthier leagues, due to their great achievements. Also some of their best players moved, or may move on, to bigger leagues.

Of course the management has been, and still is working hard for proper replacements, of which the most noticeable (but not least likely) is the new head-coach Mark van Bommel. The previous coach of the U19 (youth) team, that also won the Dutch title, will take over from Cocu, after being assistant to his father in law, that has been coaching Australia during the world cup. Apart from a promising past as an (assistant) coach, he has a glorious past as a football player, for PSV winning several league titles, cups and playing many champions league matches. He also was successful with FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Bayern Munchen. Hence very experienced and all in all a man with a real PSV heart, with true passion and skill to be a worthy replacement of the successful Cocu.

Also the technical manager, the successful Marcel Brands who deserved a move to Everton, has been replaced, as well as the director of the PSV academy and various youth coaches. The good news is that PSV found worthy replacements, often by ex-players, of which we are welcoming home again, like the head of the youth academy, ex youth and assistant coach and former player, Ernest Faber.

So how well PSV will do is a difficult question to answer, especially seeing the many changes so far, and uncertainty what the exact squad will look like. We do know that they have an interesting program of practice matches, most noticeable, the home match against Valencia on July 28. So keep an eye on their agenda, and try to visit one of their matches or even a training at the beautiful Herdgang training ground, that is currently being further upgraded. Or come to see them compete for their first price of the new season and win the supercup (also know as Johann Cruyff schaal). As most games are sold out, this is a good opportunity.. and grab a drink on the way to the stadium in any of the nice bars in its proximity.

Live Music

Daniel Kemish is an ‘Americana / Folk Singer’, born in England, whose voice goes right to the core. In 2015, Daniel traveled to Nashville and recorded his debut album at Ocean Way Studios. Last year Daniel spent a month alone in a mountain refuge, to compose his second album in isolation. No electricity / running water or telephones and only a wood stove for heating / cooking and melting snow. Daniel came back with a new sound and a new style that shows that he has grown up as both a songwriter and a performer.

A Million Shoes consists of three very enthusiastic musicians: Cees, Jack and Joseph. They have a large repertoire of original covers which they have transformed into a swing version. Result: a familiar sound in a new jacket. A Million Shoes plays with authentic instruments: double bass, upright piano, guitar, accordion and drums. And not unimportant: They are known for making atmosphere!

And our resident DJ NickLeBeat will be spinning pure vinyl grooves: reggae, vintage soul & funk.
