Exhibit at city hall expresses support for protesters Iran

A photo exhibition by Iranian photographer Shaghayegh Moradiannejad has opened at Eindhoven city hall. With the exhibition, the organisers want to show support for the protesters in Iran who are now campaigning against the Islamic regime and for more freedom.

Moradiannejad portrays the lives of women who often lived and died in desolation, for example by setting themselves on fire. The exhibition highlights the pain experienced by many women in Iran, Iraq and Syria.

The exhibition was organised by Stichting Samen voor Gezondheid van Vrouwen (foundation together for women’s health), Werkgroep Eindhoven (working group Eindhoven) and Saskia Blom, to show support for the protest in Iran for human rights, democracy and freedom. Earlier, a projection at city hall also showed solidarity with the Iranians in resistance.

The exhibition will be on display until the end of December.

GLOW organisers plan changes to light festival

0

In light of the coronavirus crisis, the organisers behind GLOW have announced plans to take a different approach this year.

GLOW, a multimedia light festival, is one of Eindhoven’s most popular it events. It attracts more than 750,000 visitors each year. This coming autumn will mark the festival’s fifteenth anniversary.

Although it is not yet clear which coronavirus regulations may still be in place in autumn, organisers do not expect GLOW to be able to take place in its usual format. This is mostly due to the large crowds that it attracts.

The organisers are thinking of alternative ways to conduct the festival that abides by social distancing regulations. They are considering projecting light shows into the air, as well as mobile artworks which drive past residential areas.

Organisers want to focus on exhibitions to unite people in Eindhoven. Having people shine a line outside their homes to illuminate Eindhoven at the same moment has been considered.

Whilst there are no final plans yet, organisers hope to make a decision by June. The festival will take place from 7 to 14 November.

Extra security on Geldropseweg during Carnaval

0

There will be extra security on Geldropseweg during this year’s Carnaval parade.

In addition to the glass and cans ban that applies throughout Eindhoven, there will be an organised event location on Geldropseweg at the intersection of Stratumsedijk and Bilderdijklaan. “We are going to place fences here”, Dorus de Bruyn, owner of Dijk 9, announces. “We have arranged extra security.”

“Those security guards are in direct contact with the organisation that will keep an eye on everything, from afar. If it gets too crowded, the fences will close temporarily, so that it does not get too crowded on this narrow stretch of road”.

Last year things got out of hand. Drunken spectators wreaked havoc on seven cars. “It was just too busy here last year, and with too many people in one place, it simply becomes unsafe”, De Bruyn says. “We want to avoid that. Carnaval should be a celebration for everyone. It is a pity that security is needed, but safety comes first”.

Ron has been taking photos at KinderVakantieWeek for 9 years

Children are surprised with a show by a fire breather at the fairytale kickoff of the tenth edition of the KinderVakantieWeek (children’s holiday activities week) in Woensel.

At the entrance of the activity area there are signs with on each panel a visual retrospective of a year. For Ron Krielen this is extra special. “It was a surprise to me, because I didn’t know they were going to do this”, he said. Most of the photos on display were taken by Ron. It is therefore also an overview of his time as a volunteer with the KVW.

Ron takes a special moment to look at one sign. It is the year in which he started, in 2014. You see a group of about 50 children around a big campfire and below that picture is another one of a kind of fire wheel. “There was a resident then who did a game with sparks. This year we’re doing it again with the fire breather”.

KVW provides connection
The first edition was in 2013, but at that time Ron was not there yet. He came to live in the neighbourhood via Trudo housing corporation and felt involved immediately. “Through Trudo I did volunteer work for the neighbourhood and that’s how I came into contact with the activity week for the children. At first it also revolved around residents getting rent reductions if they volunteered in the neighbourhood. It then slowly grew into what it is today”. Especially that connecting factor was a big motivation for him to help out.

This year he is once again making beautiful pictures, but not during the whole event. A replacement is already in place because he finds it difficult to stop completely. Ron will still be here for a few days. “I simply don’t have the time to do all days anymore, but otherwise I would definitely be here more often this week”.

After the morning performance, the children are already busy with activities. In a tent they are busy practicing kung-fu and in the middle of the lawn a group is doing a robot dance during a hip-hop course. Like other years there are two large swimming pools, so in the afternoon they can enjoy splashing around in them.

Human Tectonics is the energy created when there is friction between two contrasting bodies/ groups/ people. This will shake things up, before they break through the cracks, spreading their ideas, inspiring, then finally coming back together again to renew the earth.

This is the theme of the 2019 edition of TEDx Eindhoven! An event full of speakers, acts and inspiration. On this day they will explore the subject of Human Tectonics.

Speakers at TEDx Eindhoven 2019

Nine speakers will do a deep dive into the world of Human Tectonics. What does it mean? Why exactly is the world changing so rapidly? By connecting various fields you will gain insight into the shifts that we see in our multicultural landscape. Whether this will be about the future of sport, race and politics or the freedom of journalism. They will share a glimpse of what’s happening in the world, in The Netherlands and in Eindhoven. 0

Kobanê workgroup is organising an event on Freedom, Equality and Hope in Northern Syria called Stories of eye witnesses. It will be on Friday 6 July from 17:45 to 21:30 at S-Plaza.

Besides the stories there will be a benefit meal and music.

Admission is free and they ask €8 p.p to cover the cost of the meal. Your donations over and above this will go towards school HIVI in Kobane.

Program: A resident of northern Syria will come to Eindhoven for this meeting with a personal story about life in this part of Syria before 2011: “From oppression to self-government”.

Jodi Liefhebber from Almere is just back from a trip through northern Syria and will give a presentation: “Jin, Jiyan, Azady: Woman, Life, Freedom in Rojava”.

Constance van Dorp reports on a humanitarian project: “Hîvî means Hope and is the name of a school”.

Peace in the Middle East is still far away. But large parts of northern Syria are safe enough. The inhabitants feel free of Assad and ISIS and try to build a new society. In the city of Kobane/ Ayn al-Arab, the Women’s Council has established a school for about 25 handicapped children, who were neglected and forgotten during the war. The name of the school is Hîvî, this means Hope. Eindhoven citizens donated 10,000 EUR for this school. With this amount, a building is currently being refurbished and equipped for the education of 50 disabled children.

You can find S-Plaza at Bleekweg 1F in Eindhoven.  For more information eindhkbn.events@gmail.com or via www.vredesburo.nl
