Students have Q&A with author

0

It was a full house on Tuesday evening at the Eindhoven bookstore, Van Piere. This despite the coronavirus warnings.

Boekenweek (Book week) essay author, Özcan Akyol, answered questions from local students. The evening was attended by 200 people. That included Van Maerlant lyceum students.

Akyol is touring the Netherland this week. His essay is entitled Generaal zonder leger – a General without an army. In it, he criticizes the current literary world. He believes modern-day authors contribute too little to society. He also thinks rebellious literature is losing ground.

new HEMA will have new concept restaurant

From Thursday, 12 March, HEMA in Eindhoven’s city center will be in their new location on 18 Septemberplein. The first 50 paying customers will receive a goody bag filled to the brim with HEMA items.

People must take note that the old store in Rechtestraat will be closed from this Sunday, 7 March. The new 1,750 m2 store will include a new restaurant concept. Although it seems big, it will, in fact, be easier for customers to find items in this new shop. Above all, the store’s fresh new look will catch the shopper’s eye.

HEMA kitchen is a new concept too. It focuses on fresh and healthy food. The restaurant has a completely new look with counters with salads, healthy sandwiches, smoothies, juices, and fresh soups. The dishes contain 100% natural ingredients and have been developed entirely according to HEMA recipes. In this way, HEMA is responding to the increasing demand for fresh and healthy meals.

Very proud

Phillip Mes, HEMA Netherlands’ Director says, “For more than 92 years, HEMA has been making our customers’ daily lives in Eindhoven better, more fun, and easier.” He says he is particularly proud of this new store. “This latest HEMA store and restaurant concept has been extensively tested among customers in the Netherlands and Belgium. It received many positive reactions from both customers and employees.”

“Rolling out the new store concept is an important part of HEMA’s growth strategy. This consists of improving performance in the core Dutch and Belgian markets.” They also want to grow internationally with partners and expand its online channels.

HEMA has 32,000 own products and services, more than 750 stores and 19,000 employees. This chain store is active in 12 countries on 3 continents.

How about a little happiness?

This new strain of the Coronavirus has people on edge. We could use a little happiness, don’t you think?

The sixth edition of the Dutch Happiness Week (DHW) will take place from Saturday,14 to Sunday, 22 March. This year it is not only about present happiness, but it also touches on future happiness. It will make ample connection with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

These goals of are designed to ‘make the world a better place’, and form the thread running through the DHW’s 2020 programme. Fontys Hogescholen and Parktheater have organised more than 70 activities for this week. These will take place in partnership with several other companies and institutions. New partners this year include the Catharina Hospital, the Jumbo supermarket chain Jumbo, and Autisme Brabant.

Lots of happy activities

There will be all sorts of events for old and young. On Friday, 20 March, Jumbo will treat children to a master class in the Parktheater. It will be led by Clara den Boer, the brains behind the ‘Lucky Suitcase’. This is a teaching package that is already used by many primary schools. The full programme and more information about the DHW can be found here.

The Eindhoven Library is also offering activities around the DHW. They have three events in English. On Wednesday, 15 March, at 14:30, people can come and hear ‘A woman’s voice’. Maaike van Steenis, will perform selected texts by female poets and word artists. The chosen texts highlight women and being a woman in different ways.

On the same day, Maaike ter Haar will present ‘Greek Goddesses: Hera’ at 15:30. She will help women recognize archetypes and share experiences. She wants to inspire women in the life paths they create.

Find your way

Then on the last day of the DHW, at 13:30, the library will have a talk about how to ‘Discover your ways to happiness in a foreign land’. The speaker will use poems and dance to describe her journey in the Netherlands, and how it showed her a way to learn new skills and nurture some of her own.

There are also the Geluksplekken (Happy places). This is a collaboration between the DHW organizers and Happiness Ambassador, Leo Bormans. Eindhoven residents nominated several ‘Happy Places’ in the city. They are ‘mirrors and windows’ of happiness, places for reflection, and action in our search for ‘attainable happiness’.

Leo Bormans is the author of international bestsellers such as ‘The World Book of Happiness’. There are tips for happiness on the signboards at these venues. These are based on large-scale research done by the University of Leuven into the effect of positive interventions. These places are part of an international network.

Wanted: 450 people named Lucas or Lukas to celebrate 450th anniversary of Lucas Gassel’s death

0

Helmond Museum is looking for 450 people named Lucas or Lukas. The search is part of a project to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the death of Lucas Gassel, a painter from Helmond.

Gassel painted during the sixteenth century, a time known as Brabant’s Golden Age. Helmond museum recently purchased a painting by Gaasel entitled ‘Landschap met het offer van Abraham’ (‘Landscape with the sacrifice of Abraham’). The painting cost 100,000 euros.

The museum will organise an extensive exhibition of Gassel’s paintings. The idea of a ‘Lucas/Lukas Day’ was proposed in order to attract more visitors.

The organisers hope to take a large group photo of all 450 people named Lucas or Lukas on 19 April. There will also be music from a troubadour named Lucas Florent, and a medieval themed party at the castle.

The exhibition opens on 10 March.

Area51 to be an Urban Culture centre

0

When the renovation of Area51 is completed in nine months, a complete park will have been created. Urban Sport and Culture will be intertwined.

This large-scale renovation is possible thanks to a financial injection of €4 million from the Brainport region deal. Brainport received a total of €370 million to bolster the area’s economic strength.

Area51 is using the money for an upgrade. They want to ensure Eindhoven’s leading role in the field of Urban Culture, both nationally and internationally, is maintained. The location in Strijp-S will soon be open to both amateur and top athletes.

By meeting standards, events such as the European Championship, World Cup or qualifying rounds for the Olympic Games can also be organised here. This should attract more visitors to Eindhoven and thus contribute to Brainport’s economic growth.

All available space to be used

Where until recently, the skate park was mainly used, after the renovation is complete, all the rooms will be used. That is, according to Area51 Director, Pim van den Bos. “The side rooms will soon be used for things like workshops and children’s parties. The enormous basement will also be used. And there will also be room for urban art and music. It has to be an Urban total concept”.

All Area51 users and beyond have had the opportunity to think about what the hall should be used for. People could contribute their ideas on social media and in the suggestion box at the location. Organisations such as the Municipality of Eindhoven and the Trudo rental agency also support this renovation.

Demolition started on Monday, but the last BMX and Skating workshops were held in the hall on Tuesday. While work goes on, these workshops will be held at schools and outdoor locations in Meerhoven and Gestel. The new Urban Park should be ready by the end of the year.

Eindhoven to celebrate women

0

Next Sunday, 8 March, is Internation Women’s Day (IWD). Activities and celebrations will be held on that weekend across the globe. Here, in Eindhoven, it will be so too.

Eindhoven celebrates IWD on Saturday, 7 March 2020 in the large foyer of the Parktheater. People can attend presentations and performances, network, and simply meet other women. All in a relaxed atmosphere.

This year’s IWD theme is ‘Each for Equal’. “An equal world is an enabled world,” states the IWD website. “Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender-equal world. Let’s all be #EachforEqual.”

Women of various nationalities will present their creative talents at Parktheatre on Saturday. Visitors can also take part in workshops. There will be a ‘meeting point’ where people can connect with women who have developed special projects in diverse fields.

The celebrations will run from 13:00 to 18:00 and will cost €3 to attend. The afternoon is organised by the C.L.O. foundation (Latin American Centre for Orientation). They have partnered with Women Inc and the Alle Vrouwen in Eindhoven (All women in Eindhoven) platform. It is also part of Eindhoven’s centenary celebration.

parkrun to launch in Eindhoven on Saturday

Saturday 29 February will see the launch of global running event, parkrun, in the Netherlands.

parkrun will launch in Eindhoven, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Nijmegen, Maastricht and Groningen this Saturday. It will then launch in Amsterdam and Leiden one week later, on 7 March 2020. There are also plans for events in The Hague, Harlem and Arnhem in the near future.

parkrun’s origins

parkrun was founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt, a South African doctor living in London, in 2004. It involves walking, jogging or running a five kilometre route in a local park. Participants register online to receive a personalised barcode, through which they receive an online result after every event. Participation is completely free of charge.

After launching in Bushy Park, London almost 16 years ago, parkrun is now active in 2000 locations across 21 countries. This includes Japan, Australia, Germany and South Africa. The Netherlands will be the 22nd country to host the event.

International community

Behind the launch is a team of volunteers that has been busy designing the route and promoting parkrun to companies, employers, schools, shops and government representatives throughout Eindhoven.

‘We are so excited to finally host parkrun in Eindhoven,’ the team of volunteers say. ‘parkrun is for everyone, no matter your ability. Everyone is welcome and there is no judgement no matter how fast or slow you complete the 5km.’

Many of the volunteers are themselves part of Eindhoven’s growing expat community, coming from Spain, the UK and South Africa. The group says that they hope parkrun will have a positive impact on Eindhoven’s international community, helping participants to connect with others and form friendships.

parkrun will take place at Karpendonkse Plas, close to TU/e, at 9:00am every Saturday. New participants are advised to meet 10 minutes prior to the start for briefing. The event is followed by refreshments at Eindhoven Athletics
