Much talked-about swimming tournament comes to Eindhoven

ISL, the International Swimming League, is coming to Eindhoven from 11 to 28 November, the council has announced. There has already been unrest about the possible arrival of the tournament.

When, in early July, it was announced that Eindhoven council wanted to bring the tournament to the city, swimming clubs reacted with anger. The tournament would mean that swimmers would not be able to use the water for a month. The council promised the clubs that it would provide ‘alternative swimming facilities’.

Now that promise needs to be upheld, because ISL prefers to hold the event play-offs of in Eindhoven. That is the second round of the competition. The first round takes place in Naples. The final will take place in another city in early January 2022.

Although the contracts between organiser and council still have to be signed, councillor Stijn Steenbakkers is already enthusiastic. “It is great that the ISL has chosen Eindhoven as host city. We look forward to welcoming the swimmers, their coaches and teams”.

‘Inspiration’

“A major international event like ISL is interesting for Eindhoven – the swimming capital of the Netherlands”, Steenbakkers says. “The many, big names in swimming will be an inspiration for young people and regular visitors to the Pieter van den Hoogenband Stadion. In addition, it is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs – who were struggling due to the lockdown, to benefit from the event”.

‘Exciting cities’
In the International Swimming League, founded by Ukrainian billionaire Konstantin Grigorishin, various swimming clubs compete against each other. Grigorishin says he is pleased to be able to organise part of the tournament in Eindhoven.

“We are happy that Eindhoven is ready to join Naples, Budapest, Dallas, Las Vegas and London on the list of exciting cities the ISL has worked with. The Dutch are known to be passionate swimming fans who will no doubt be delighted to see local stars such as Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Kira Toussaint, Femke Heemskerk and Arno Kamminga in action”,  Grigorishin said.

Eindhoven residents pitch tents on neighbourhood site

Since 2013, residents from all over the Netherlands have been meeting each other at De Buurtcamping (The Neighbourhood Campsite). Through this initiative some eight hundred thousand meetings were realised last year, at 53 Neighbourhood Campsites. This year there is also a Neighbourhood Campsite in Eindhoven for the first time.

Togetherness

The Jacob van Oppenheimer Park will be transformed into an actual campsite for three days. The campsite is inhabited by all the people who live in the area. This makes the Buurtcamping an inclusive meeting place for everyone. One-third of the pitches are reserved for people who live on a minimum income.

Just like on a regular campsite, you are outside a lot at the Buurtcamping and everyone is equal. Go to the toilet with a toilet roll under your arm, do the dishes together with the neighbour and borrow toothpaste. By setting up the campsite together or participating in one of the activities, residents get to know each other better during their stay at the buurtcamping.

Purpose

“The main objective of the campsite”, say campsite managers ‘De Strijp’, “is to allow people to come out of their bubble: rich and poor, with or without education, with a Dutch or non-Dutch background, everyone meets each other at the campsite! We also offer a holiday for families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go on holiday”.

The neighbourhood campsite in Eindhoven focuses on Drents Dorp, Lievendaal and ‘t Ven. “In other words, all neighbourhoods bordering on the Jacob Oppenheimer Park. Of course, other enthusiastic residents of Strijp are also welcome.”

Neighbourhood campsite ‘De Strijp’ is open from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 August. You can register as a volunteer or reserve a pitch here.

Durga Puja celebration in Eindhoven Oct. 12-14

0

“BongHoven” an Indian group (formed by Bengalis, from the eastern part of India) are celebrating the second edition of Eindhoven Sharad Utsav.

Its the festival of autumn and celebrated in India, especially in Bengal for almost a week. Sharad Utsav, also known as Durga Puja is a religious occasion to worship the supreme goddess, Durga, which glorifies women power. But for Bengalis it is more about fun, socializing with family and friends. People dress up in new clothing, visit the decorated marquee, participate in the festivities, and feed of mouthwatering delicacies.

This year the Eindhoven Sharad Utsav is celebrated from 12th to 14th October at wijkcentrum blixems (Ouverture 2, 5629 PV Eindhoven). Bonghoven is also organizing an Indian Food Festival on the 12th along with several cultural performances. The next two days would continue this fun with mouth-watering foods, more cultural and fun-events.

Eat tacos and watch Mexico-Germany

Coming Sunday (17 June 2018) you can enjoy tacos and the match between Mexico and Germany together. This will happen at Wall Street, Stadhuisplein, Eindhoven. The tacos will be from Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art.

From 15:00h onwards, they will be offering Pastel Azteca and a variety of tacos, and the match between Mexico and Germany will be screened so you won’t miss anything. The event will be till 21.30h.

It is the second time Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art have this cooperation with Wall Street (a pop-up restaurant and temporarily exposition space).

Mis Amores Tortilleria & Art was founded by five Mexicans living and working in the Netherlands. Their passion for Mexican culture and authentic Mexican food were the main drivers to start a small business related to the elaboration of corn tortilla and the promotion of Mexican artists. As entrepreneurs in a foreign country, the process to establish a company was not simple and it took them some months to establish. The process to produce tortillas was the second learning curve to be climbed because as Mexicans they expect the taste of their products to be as good as in their native country.

The final goal is to establish a Mexican food restaurant in Eindhoven, but first, the five Mexican partners would love to offer their tortillas in the city that embraced them to live here. And if you can help them to diversify their business or know about a location, they are open for opportunities.

Tortillas are made of corn, it is the most consumed cereal in Mexico. Corn tortillas are very nutritive, rich in fibres, vitamins, and minerals. It is also gluten-free. The original process for the elaboration of original Mexican tortillas is a Prehispanic process where corn is boiled with calcium oxide and it is called “nixtamalization”.

To order corn tortillas and to have them delivered for free or if you like to know more, you can find more information on their website.
