De Dassenburcht in Nuenen dances into the new school year

Children from group 8 of De Dassenburcht in Nuenen started the new school year on Monday with a dance with rapper Flinke Jongen, at the initiative of Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN, the Dutch road safety association).

At 07:30, the Nuenen schoolyard was already swinging. Veilig Verkeer Nederland chose the school for the national kick-off of the annual traffic campaign. That is why, in addition to parents and children, rapper Flinke Jongen and his mascot Flinkie were also on the square. Danny Dijkhuizen is the real name of the rapper from Schiedam, who wants to teach children to be resilient in difficult situations because of his own difficult childhood. He previously made a video clip about traffic with the children of De Dassenburcht and knows how to get the atmosphere going right away.

Safety

Veilig Verkeer Nederland cannot stress this enough: parents must come to school by bike or on foot to keep traffic around the school as safe as possible. In this respect, De Dassenburcht has a difficult situation with (too) few parking spaces around the school. “It is indeed sometimes quite dangerous here,” student Feline says. Hopefully, Flinke Jongen’s performance will give parents the idea to leave the car at home more often.

Snorkeling

After the dance, group eight finally knew the holidays are over and the children welk to their classroom where the lesson started. Most students started the lessons with fresh courage, after a summer full of camping, sleepovers or snorkeling in Sicily. “I’m still a bit tired”,  Tygo says. “I’ had a few sleepovers in the final holiday week. And then you don’t sleep that much”.

Teacher Kim is back in front of the class as fresh as a daisy, but another employee of the school still has to get used to the rhythm. “Six weeks of vacation… pffff…”, she says. “Then you’ve switched off. I will have to get used to rising early again!”

Muziekpodium POM was robbed of €10,000 in two weeks

In two weeks, €10,000 worth of musical instruments and associated equipment were stolen from the music venue Paviljoen Ongehoorde Muziek (pavillion unheard music, POM) on Vestdijk, without any traces of a break-in.

Two special synthesisers, effect pedals, a high-quality sound monitor, but also all kinds of cables, a projector and camera lenses were removed from the  space of Paviljoen Ongehoorde Muziek on three different occasions in two weeks.

Bart van Dongen, the founder of the venue, was puzzled. “There were no signs of a break-in and the keys that are in circulation are in the possession of people I know and trust one hundred per cent. It was maddening to notice that things were disappearing”.

Replacing the locks did not help, Bart says. “The first time things disappeared, we immediately had new locks put on the doors, but a few days later it happened again”.

Bike cellar

Eventually, the founder of the music venue discovered that the space where POM is located could be entered via the adjacent student flat. “Via the bike cellar of that flat, there is a small, red door that leads to a space with a hatch, which led to our space. Moreover, once you are inside, you can open the doors from the inside, which makes it easy to steal things”.

The hatch has now been welded shut and boarded up. “I am glad that we finally figured out how someone got in here. But the damage had already been done: around €10,000 worth of stuff has disappeared”, Bart says.

Crowdfunding

Musician Rianne Wilbert decided to help POM by starting a crowdfunding campaign so that new equipment can be purchased for all the stolen stuff. And that campaign is going very well, Van Dongen says. “I put the campaign online at 08:00 on Friday morning and by 16:00 the majority of the target amount had already been raised”, Bart says.

Moving forward

On Saturday, the counter is at almost €12,000. “The more we raise the better, then we can even make progress”, the POM founder says. “It is great to see how much support we are getting. I am stunned that POM is so popular, apparently. It means a lot to me”, Bart concludes.

ASML Marathon aims for 40,000 runners at 40th edition

Golazo, the organiser of the ASML Marathon in Eindhoven, hopes to welcome 40,000 participants to the 40th edition of the sporting event. The organisation is on track to reach that number.

The marathon will be held on Saturday 12 October and Sunday 13 October. The sale of starting tickets is going particularly well. For example, the marathon full distance is already sold out: there are twice as many participants as in 2023, namely 6,000 instead of 3,000 last year.

“We don’t really know why, but it is special”, Rozemarijn Heijman, of Golazo event management company, says. “Also because we see that the marathon in Eindhoven normally gets going a bit later in terms of sales”.

Bucket list

“Of course we don’t ask people why they participate, but we also see that the number of participants is increasing at other events. Running in general is very popular and perhaps it is also a bucket list thing. It is something that people want to have done once in their lives”, Heijman says.

“Perhaps it also plays a role that corona is now really behind us and no longer plays a role in people’s consideration to participate in a sporting event”.

Sold out

The other distances that can be run at the ASML Marathon have not doubled in number of participants, but here too the sale of starting tickets is going well, Heijman says. “The half marathon is also sold out and the quarter marathon is almost sold out. There are still places available for other distances such as the city run and the mini marathon. The shorter distances receive the most registrations closer to the event. These distances also require less preparation”.

Because the organisation also expects to sell many starting tickets in September, there is hope that 40,000 participants will participate. “That would be great, it would fit in well with the 40th edition and also in 040”, the spokesperson says. In 2023, 27,000 people ran in Eindhoven.

Marktplaats

Last year, the necessary starting tickets could be purchased via Marktplaats advertisement site. Something that Golazo is not happy about, but the organisation can do little about. “We can’t ask people for ID for a starting ticket. We see it happening, but we are pretty much powerless. There is simply a chance that you will be scammed by a fraudster. That is very annoying. Unfortunately, due to technical problems, we did not have a platform ourselves this year where the starting tickets could be purchased, which means that we are also dependent on sales outlets of other parties”.

KWF

Anyone who still wants to participate in the marathon but does not have a starting ticket may be better off obtaining a starting ticket via KWF (Koningin Wilhelmina Fonds, Queen Wilhelmina foundation) by participating in the campaign ‘Ren tegen kanker‘ (run against cancer). “We have been working with KWF for some time now and through them we are making around 200 tickets available, of which there are now a few dozen left. To do this, people must collect at least €500 for KWF before 13 September. If they succeed, they will receive a free starting ticket and support an important charity”, Heyman says.

Kash already motocross world champion at age of 11

Kash van Hamond from Best is only eleven years old and since mid-July the reigning world champion motocross in the 65cc class. And he wants to achieve much more…

The fanaticism and determination are oozing out of young Kash van Hamond when he rides his training laps on De Landsard circuit. He even rides his motorbike during his summer holidays. He likes that better than swimming or building a hut. “I may have a world title now, but we just have to keep going”, he says professionally.

Kash is also a bit disappointed that he has to ride his 65cc motorbike for the training to record a video. He would rather take the 85cc that he will ride next season. “I hope that I can join Team NL again and win the title again”, he says ambitiously.

Tears

But first let’s go back to 14 July of this year. At the age of 11, the young motocross rider from Best wins his first world title. When he crosses the finish line first in Heerde, he screams with happiness and the tears flow freely.

“A lot of people came to see me”, Kash says. “They all told me to step on the gas. That did create more tension, but you have to let that slide. When I won, it was very emotional. I wanted to go to my father right away because I was so happy. Because he made sure I could become world champion. Just like my mother and my sister”.

The whole family is dedicated to motocross and they enjoy Kash’s success together. “He worked hard for it, so I’m super proud”, father Ramon van Hamond says. And for mother Michelle it was also a glorious day. “I had goose bumps from start to finish. The feeling was extreme”.

Two jobs

It does take a lot of time, the support of Kash. “I actually have two jobs”, Ramon says. “And you have to be on the same page as a family. Because if our daughter doesn’t like it, it’s over too. But she helps out as well. I hope he will get far in the future, but that’s still a long way off. Until then we’re going to have a lot of fun”.

Kash certainly has fun, but he also has big plans. “I want to become world champion in MXGP”, he says firmly. “Just like Jeffrey Herlings or Jorge Prado. I do dream of that, yes”.

Eindhoven liberation commemoration gets a new look

War reporters talking to schoolchildren, small neighbourhood festivals, a sporting event that focuses on slavery and young people who mean something to the local community are put in the spotlight. These are some of the new plans with which Eindhoven wants to focus on the theme of liberation and commemoration in a new and more contemporary way.

The plans are the brainchild of Stichting 18 September (18 september foundation), together with other organisations such as Stichting Ik Wil (I want foundation), Liberation040, the Lichtjesroute (route of lights) and Centrum voor de Kunsten (centre for the arts). With the new initiative Freedom Vibes 040 they want to ‘develop innovative traditions and modernise the commemoration and liberation’. The timing is no coincidence: this year marks the 80th anniversary of the region being liberated from Nazi Germany by the Allies.

Young people

Every year, Eindhoven commemorates the events of the Second World War and the liberation of the city on 18 September 1944. On that day, a procession of old army vehicles passes through the city centre, the liberation parade, with speeches and the lighting of the liberation fire on Stadhuisplein. That tradition will continue, but Freedom Vibes 040 also wants to appeal to younger generations with new activities and projects to continue to commemorate peace and freedom. The idea is to connect the different generations with each other in this way.

“Freedom Vibes 040 emphasises the factors that bind us, especially in an era where differences are more often highlighted. Through joint initiatives, we hope to inspire people to actively contribute to their community and to promote the values of freedom and peace”, the organisations involved say.

Plans

Freedom Vibes 040 wants to roll out the plans for the long term. Various ideas have already been developed for this year. For example, there will be a Freedom College Tour, in which Dutch war reporters will talk to pupils and vocational students about freedom. There will also be a Local Hero Concert, a tribute to young people who have made a special contribution to local society. In addition, there will be various small neighbourhood festivals this year, starting on 18 September, with the aim of strengthening local communities. Furthermore, a Walk of Freedom will be held to commemorate the abolition of slavery. And with the art project Krassen op de Plaat (scratches on the record), the stories of veterans will be brought to life through visual arts, music and dance.

Jacob Oppenheimerpark becomes community campsite

Part of Jacob Oppenheimerpark in Eindhoven will be transformed into a community campsite this coming weekend. This is a national initiative that has existed since 2013. Last year, a total of more than seventeen thousand people took part in the so-caled ‘Buurtcamping’ throughout the Netherlands. There are thirty camping spots in Eindhoven.

Just like at a normal campsite, at the Buurtcamping you are often outside and everyone is equal, listening to stories or music together by the campfire and eating together or chatting over a cup of coffee. “By building the campsite together or participating in one of the activities, residents get to know each other better”, campsite manager, Anita van der Pas, says.

Low income campers

She emphasises that a third of the camping spots are reserved for low-income campers. “Especially for families who would otherwise not be able to go on holiday. We have extra tents and camping gear for these people. There are families, couples, but also grandparents with their grandchildren. There is a full program with workshops, circus, children’s disco, campfires and of course bingo”.

With the community campsite in Jacob Oppenheimerpark, the organisation focuses specifically on Drents Dorp, Lievendaal and ‘t Ven districts. Anita: “But of course the residents of ‘t Schoot and Philipsdorp are also very welcome. As are the people from all the neighbourhoods that border the park”. About one hundred and twenty participants are expected. The camping starts on Friday at 15:00 and lasts until Sunday at 15:00.

Summa students practice all summer for world championships in Lyon

Their classmates are on vacation, but Willem van de Ven and Ginger Brentjens are toiling in the bakery of Summa College in Eindhoven. In September, the duo will participate in the world championship for vocational students in Lyon (France). Until then, the duo will train daily at school.

Ginger will compete for the world championship pastry, while Willem will compete with the best boulangers in training. “Students come to Lyon from all over the world. Because we first got through the preliminary rounds at our own school and then won the Dutch championship, we can now go to France”, Willem says.

Is it a shame that Ginger, unlike her classmates, does not have a holiday? “No, that does not bother me. I know what I do it for and that it is a passion. That is why I do not mind at all”.

Long days

Ginger and Willem work long days. The two report to school every day at 07:30. They stay there until 16:30. “They are long days, but you practice a lot of different things. For example, today I have a time trial. You want to imitate the competition as closely as possible. During my previous time trial I was fifteen minutes over time. So now I am looking at where I can gain time”, Willem says.

The World Skills, as the world championship is called, will be held from 10 September to 15 September. Until then, Ginger and Willem will continue to train hard to perform as well as possible in France.

Successful Kitten Day

The ROZE Foundation in Eindhoven has had a successful kitten day. Eighteen cats or kittens have found a match and will soon have a home. But even with these adopted kittens, there are still many more available.

“Every summer there are a lot of kittens,” says Alma van Dorenmalen, manager of the shelter. “Many cats are not helped, unwanted litters are then abandoned or dumped here. And we get a lot of kittens from street cats,” she explains. Last week there were 250 kittens and cats looking for a home. “And we get five more every day.”

Match

It happens every summer and that’s why kitten days are organised. People can make an appointment, fill out a questionnaire and a mediator will then see which kitten suits them. Kirsten Verdonschot is one of those mediators. “Some people prefer a calm kitten or cat. Because we socialise the kittens, we know which kitten best suits those needs,” she explains.

Sometimes people come for a kitten but go home with a cat. “Some people come for a kitten, but then it turns out they live in an apartment, and they want one kitten,” she says. “But kittens need a lot of energy and attention. That’s why we sometimes recommend two kittens or an adult cat.”

Thanks to this edition, 18 kittens or cats have been adopted. The ROZE Foundation is going to organise several kitten days this summer.
