‘Asparagus in the Fields’ moves to Veldhoven

0

The fifth edition of the Asperges op de Velden (Asparagus in the Fields) event will not take place in Nuenen but in Veldhoven. The pop-up restaurant is to move to a new location.

The restaurant is to be set up, for this fifth-anniversary edition, in the John Kelders Asparagus nursery’s fields in Veldhoven. In particular, this venue is a lot more spacious than Raaijmakers Hoeve in Nuenen where the event has taken place every time so far. There is more space to ‘set the restaurant up more creatively’, the organisers give as a reason for the move. There is also more parking space in the neighbourhood.

This year, Asparagus in the Fields will be held from 15 to 30 May.

First ever vegan/yoga Festival

Eindhoven’s first-ever Yoga and Vegan Festival will be held this Sunday, 12 May in the Klokgebouw

The day-long festival aims to bring these two themes together. There will be yoga and meditation classes, talks on mental health, and classes for children. There will also be a vegan market. Here visitors can buy products and food from local businesses – all vegan.

Yogific, an organisation with its headquarters in London, UK, is hosting the festival. They run yoga and vegan festival across Europe. “We are overwhelmed by the response that we have received in Eindhoven,” says Yogfii’s Mirte Verhappen.

‘Amazing experience’

“Our vegan yoga teachers from England, Poland, and Ireland will be joining local Eindhoven based teachers. And the vegan stalls will offer an amazing experience.” The organisers support the zero waste movement, so visitors are encouraged to bring their own crockery and cutlery. The food stalls will give a discount to those who do,

Those interested in taking the yoga lessons should bring along their own yoga mats. All classes will be conducted in English and Dutch. The festival will be from 10:00 to 19:00 and costs from €3 (online) to €5 (at the door), with free entrance for children under 14.

´Show Your Hope’ – the art project that became a mini-festival

0

How does one define hope? This is the question local Dutch artist, Martin Voorbij, has asked thousands of artists worldwide over the past few decades.

Rather than responding to him in words, Voorbij requested them to reply to him by painting their personal interpretation of the theme ‘hope’. This weekend, Voorbij will exhibit part of his art collection at De Sociale Dienst in Eindhoven, during the Show Your Hope – Mini Art Festival.

The exhibition will be made up mainly of works that Martin collected during his bus tour through Tunisia several years ago. The artist himself will offer guided tours, discussing some of the paintings. He will share a few of his Show Your Hope adventures abroad too. There will also be a photo presentation of Voorbij´s trip through Tunisia, and Tunisian food and music.

Pitch Parade

Since many Tunisian artists that Voorbij visited spoke words of revolution, this weekend´s mini-festival will also provide for a so-called Pitch Parade. This will offer live columnists a stage on which to talk about revolution, hope, art, and the current changes in our society.

Also, the festival offers an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Show Your Hope collection artists and participate in a painting workshop on Sunday, 12 May. The workshop is suitable for children as well as adults.

The mini-festival runs from tomorrow afternoon, 10 May until Sunday, 12 May. On 10 and 11 May, it will be open from 16:00 to 02:00 and on 12 May from 12:00-00:00. The painting workshop will be between 13:00 and 17:00.

Although admission is free, the painting workshop will set you back €3. The Show Your Hope – Mini Art Festival will be held at De Sociale Dienst, 4-6 Deken van Somerenstraat in Eindhoven. Please visit their Facebook event page for more information.

Happy (summer) Holi-yay

It is almost summer holidays. Yay! For this reason, Holi-yay is popping up at The Student Hotel Eindhoven.

Two local students will be running this unique, temporary store. It will be open from 12 to 25 May on the first floor of the Hotel’s restaurant. Third-year student entrepreneurs, Dagmar van Lieshout and Amber Huls, are doing a course in International Lifestyle Studies at Fontys.

They have created their own future. Together, they started the Holi-yay company, which is now also part of their internship position. The two students sell trendy travel articles through their webshop – colourful bags, towels with tropical prints, sunglasses, suitcase accessories, and trendy inflatables. Everything you need to go on a great holiday.

Here’s your opportunity to see their range of products with your own eyes instead of online. Holi-yay’s pop-up store is the perfect collaboration with The Student Hotel. According to the Dagmar and Amber, The Student Hotel is not just a place to sleep, but a place to make contact with other travellers. In short, everything is devoted to relaxing holidays.

Walking the Southern waterline: 11 Brabant cities defended by water

For centuries in Brabant, water has been both an enemy and a friend. Over hundreds of years, locals have built waterlines and used the water as a defence against attacks.

The longest, oldest, and most used waterline in the Netherlands is the Zuiderwaterlinie (Southern waterline) which runs right through Brabant. In the coming weeks, you can see it up close and learn how that waterline worked. From 19 to 29 June, you can walk through all eleven fortified cities with Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie.

The routes take you on a tour through 450 years of Brabant military history. The Southern waterline took on its shape and form at the end of the Middle Ages. Over the years, people added defences, which strengthened the original line. Up to and including the Cold War, the Southern waterline remained important for Brabant’s protection.

Get-together

For those who want to do the 20km version, the first stage of Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie starts in Bergen op Zoom on today (Wednesday), 19 June. There is also a shorter route every day of approximately 10km. You walk this route in a group with a guide. Whatever distance you choose, everyone is welcome to join get-together after each day’s walk. In the past, walkers have sung songs together or watched a dance performance.

The eleventh and final stage, on Saturday, 29 June, leads to Grave. That day you can opt for an extra long, 40km route is may be a nice option if this is the only day that you walk. Participation every day is not mandatory. You can walk one route or multiple routes. The choice is yours as to how much you, and which routes, you decide to walk. Participating in the Expeditie Zuiderwaterlinie is free, but you must register.

Hard or soft ‘g’

While walking, you will discover that the Southern waterline is not only an important military heritage but that it is also a cultural border. Between north and south, Roman Catholic and Protestant, and the hard and soft “g”. Presenter Björn van der Doelen showcases the history of the Southern waterline in a brand new series. He encounters wonderful stories, sometimes about those differences but especially about cooperation to defend Brabant. The first episode can be seen on Sunday, 7 July, on Omroep Brabant.

Beer belly boxing finals come to Nuenen

0

Willem de Louw from Helmond is the current Dutch Bierbuik Boxing (Beer Belly Boxing) champion. This Saturday, he will defend his title at Laco Standbad arena in Nuenen.

The principle of beer belly boxing is not particularly complicated. ‘Our matches are held in a real boxing ring,’ explains de Louw during Omroep Brabant’s radio show, ‘Wakker!’. ‘With our hands behind our backs, we try to floor our opponent by bumping into each other with our bellies.’

Brown fruit bowl

The boxers’ weight plays a major role in determining whether they will win or lose the match. After losing some weight recently, de Louw explains that he is now back in preparation for the competition. He follows the ‘brown fruit bowl’ diet, which consists of ‘a lot of croquettes, a lot of fat food and definitely a lot of beer’.

As well as this unusual diet plan, de Louw says ‘I let people hit my stomach. It makes it harder’. When asked if he experiences stomach ache after a match, de Louw says ‘no, I rub my belly with oil’.

Speaking of his opponent, he says ‘he is clearly a favourite to win, but that will change on Saturday’.

For de Louw, beer belly boxing is a lifestyle, not just a sport. Rather poetically, he says, ‘life is like a frikandel’, a popular Dutch fast food snack made of different meats. By this he means that ‘you have to make something special out of it yourself’.

News outlet Omroep Brabant will be present at the finals this weekend. To follow the live action, head to Zinderend Zuiden. The broadcast will be given in Dutch.

The theatre company, Afslag Eindhoven, will return to the Genneper Hoeve next summer with the performance, Stallerhof

Last summer, this piece about a farmer was performed 13 times in the Eindhoven organic farm’s cowshed. Because of the great interest, Stallerhof will return. There are now eight performances planned for the summer months in 2020.

Meanwhile, 2,000 visitors saw the performance in Eindhoven. The performance is about a family in which a farmhand abuses an intellectually disabled daughter. The story was written in 1971 by playwright, Franz Xaver Kroetz. He came to Eindhoven last summer to see the performance.

Eindhoven turns 100 in 2020

0

Next year, the city of Eindhoven’s celebrates its centenary anniversary. And the Municipality has great plans.

It has been almost 100 years since the villages of Eindhoven, Gestel, Stratum, Woensel, Strijp, and Tongelre amalgamated to form the present-day Eindhoven. Since then, Eindhoven has been growing rapidly and continues to do so. Of all the Dutch cities that have more than 200,000 inhabitants, Eindhoven has expanded the fastest.

Mayor John Jorritsma, “Eindhoven is large and small all at once.”

According to Eindhoven’s Mayor, John Jorritsma, the city’s centenary is something to truly celebrate. “This single municipality was formed as a result of Philips’ growth spurt. A hundred years ago, it needed a lot of workforce and space. A united city could offer that.”

Large and small at the same time

“Now, 100 years later, Eindhoven has a strong domestic and international presence. The villages that made up Eindhoven as a whole have, however, kept their individual identities. We are, therefore, simultaneously, a small-scale and international player.”

“Philips is on its way to becoming the largest company in the world. Philips is still a major household name. It, has, however, expanded into the areas of knowledge, technology, and design,” says Jorritsma in a press release issued by the City Council.

The Municipality of Eindhoven will kick off the anniversary year on 6 January with the Kick-Off 1920-2020. This event takes place in DOMUSDELA/Mariënhage. It replaces two other events – the traditional New Year’s concert in the Muziekgebouw and the municipal New Year’s reception in the City Hall. It will be a low-key cultural meeting aimed at all inhabitants of the city.

In 2020, the City Council wants to focus on promoting social togetherness and solidarity. It is, therefore, wants to partner with Eindhoven’s social and cultural institutions. They are calling on all these kinds of associations, groups, and even individuals to organise initiatives that celebrate the city’s solidarity.

‘Honour, celebrate, create’

This, under the banner, ‘Eer gisteren – Vier vandaag – Maak morgen’ (‘Honour the past – celebrate the present – create the future). People can go to eindhoven1920-2020.nl for more information. There are already several events posted, for example, the Gennerper Parken Lopen, on 5 January.

Other events include “A Night On The Town” in the Muziekgebouw. This gala concert by the Royal Harmonico Phileutonia. The villages and the city are portrayed through music, hip hop, images, photos, and films.

The PSV supporters’ association and the Eindhoven Centre for Art and Culture – better known as the CKE –  also celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2020. The Marathon Eindhoven wants to organise a Ringloop, where participants start and finish at their own district.

Trees as a live celebration

A Tilia or Linden tree. Photo credit: Wikipedia

The Municipality is also planning to plant a large number of tilia, or linden, trees in every district. The trees are intended as tangible reminders of the Eindhoven’s 100th anniversary. The City Council is looking at how these specially-pruned trees can be planted at six ‘central and historically important locations’.

“These trees, planted in a central place, will be of symbolic value,” says an Eindhoven civil servant. “In the past, these were places of, for example, wedding ceremonies and birth celebrations. Places where people gathered. At the same time, this project contributes to the further greening of the city.”
