Students want to ‘save’ the city’s nightlife

‘Save the Night’. This is what a group of students is calling their live stream.

The five students are from the Fontys Minor Dance Industry in Tilburg. They’re organising a 24-hour live stream from Lab-1 in Eindhoven. They want to draw attention to the city’s nightlife.

One of the organisers, Demi Kok, explains why the students started the project. “Nightlife is extremely important for many people. Not only for the development of the city, for participants’ development too.”

“For many people, going out at night forms an important part of their social life. That’s in danger now.” According to Kok, various places contribute to a night out.

These include hotels, bars, cafes, restaurants, as well as those in the cultural sector. The corona crisis is hitting these places hard. “That, while there are few opportunities to make up for these losses.”

An experience

“A restaurant can still deliver meals; for a pub or a nightclub, it’s different,” explains Demi. “It’s difficult to have a beer delivered. People also come for the experience, the social interaction.”

“An online concert or zoom meeting can’t replace that.” However, this is the form ‘Save the Night’ has to take. “It’s the only way for us to draw attention to the state of nightlife.”

The event starts this Thursday at 18:00. It’ll last until 18:00 the next day. It’ll consist of debates, columns, and music.

“LAB-1, the Mission, GroenLinks, several night mayors, The Orchestra Collective, Smèrrig, and the Pit Stop youth centre will be joining the discussion.” The event will be streamed live via the Twitch.tv streaming platform.

Sombre Christmas even in churches

0

This Christmas Eve, St Joris church clergy will be having a ‘Church tour’.

They will be visiting six Eindhoven churches, travelling part of with a nativity scene. There are usually eight Christmas services in Eindhoven South.

The COVID rules, however, mean these have been cancelled this year. That means thousands of people won’t be able to attend Christmas mass. So, this church tour an alternative.

Six stops

The churches on the route are Catharina, Martinus (in Tongelre), and Pius X Church(in Stratum). The route continues past the Gestelse Lambertus, and Trudo Church (in Strijp). It ends at St Joris Church.

The Christmas gospel will be read at each church. A Christmas message and some prayers will also be shared. St Joris says there’s a kind of beauty in this year’s austere Christmas celebrations.

“In this corona time, all the Christmas festivities are more sombre. They’re, therefore, slightly more aligned to the humble birth of Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem. There were few visitors then.”

Only three visitors

“There were only three wise men from the East. So, they were adhering strictly to Rutte’s rules. Less glitter and glamour this year, but perhaps more the true Christmas spirit than ever”, says a church spokesperson.

There was an Easter Church tour during the first lockdown too. According to the St Joris Church’s spokesperson, there was a lot of interest then. They hope this will also be the case now.

The eight Christmas Day services will continue. As will the seven on Boxing Day. Only 30 worshippers are allowed at each service.

Museum profitable despite COVID-19

Eindhoven Museum is closing this year in the black. That’s remarkable considering how hard the corona crisis has hit these kinds of institutions.

Eindhoven Museum includes places like the preHistorisch Dorp (preHistorical Village). De Museum door de Stad (The Museum throughout the City), also falls under this museum’s wing. This was held as part of the city’s centenary celebrations.

Despite the global pandemic, the preHistorical Village had a relatively good year. Ward Rennen, the Museum’s director, is therefore satisfied. “We had to close for two months.”

Fewer visitors

‘So, instead of seven, we were only open for five months. Even so, the number of visitors remained the same. This year, there were 31.000. That’s compared to the 40.000 last year when we were open for the full seven months.”

To explain the relatively high number of visitors, the director attributes this success to the Village’s layout. “We’re an open-air museum. A lot of people didn’t go away this summer.

“They were looking for safe outdoor activities. An open-air museum, with this space is an attractive outing.”

Far fewer school visits

The corona crisis did undoubtably affect other visitor numbers.  “Last year there were 16,000 school kids who visited. This year there were only 3,300. So, that’s where you can see the main decline,” says Ward.

That’s reflected in the museum’s financial picture. “We’re losing between €150.000 and €200,000 in income.” However, the Museum wouldn’t have been profitable without government support.

“We’ve received various government aid like NOW 1 and 2. We also receive subsidies from the Eindhoven Municipality. We got money from the the Mondriaan Fund too.” This is a national public fund for visual art and cultural heritage.

Cut back costs

“Without this income, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve a positive result,” admits Ward. But that’s the case. Not least because the museum cut its budget right at the start of the crisis.

“We cut back on several things. We cut our budgeting and programming budgets. That was even before we knew there’d it be support packages from the government.”

“We terminated six seasonal workers’ contracts too. They were still on probation at the time. That’s no fun, but we had to do it. Fortunately, some of those people had work with us in the summer,” says Rennen.

Good news

All in all, Eindhoven Museum is in a good place. “I’m not worried at all about the continued existence of the institution. That we have something left over at the end of the year is also good news. Because the crisis’ effects will still be felt next year.”

Rennen can’t yet say exactly how much profit there is. “We might have to repay some of the government support. We’ve used the NOW scheme.”

“But we have had good months in the summer. Exactly things will develop will only become clear later,” the director says.

Attention to each other

The festival is supported by the Eindhoven municipality since it fits in this period of #attentiontoeachother. This period focus on the topic of togetherness and cohesion in the city.

Councilor for Culture & Design, Monique List-de Roos: “The cultural sector has been hit very hard by the corona crisis. Cultural institutions still have limited visitors and creators see a large part of their assignments lost. Fortunately, I also see many creative ways in which the sector manages to bring its offer to its audience. #eindhovenfestival’s initiative is a great example. Cultural institutions and creators, together with enormous enthusiasm and within a short time frame, have realized a complete digital offer. Young and old can enjoy this during the Christmas holidays. Culture can also connect people online. And especially in these times, that connection and attention to each other are very important. As a municipality, we are happy to contribute.”

#eindhovenfestival is the reuslt of close collaborations from various cultural institutions. The festival intend to add more experience and fun to the Christmas period and meanwhile support the event creators.

The Silent Film Festival will continue despite COVID-19

0

The fourth edition of the Dutch Silent Film Festival (NSFF) in Eindhoven will take place this year. That’s despite the corona crisis.

That’s according to the event director, Daan van den Hurk. Only silent films are screened during the film festival. They all feature a soundtrack, especially piano pieces.

Because of all the anti-corona measures, the festival has been redesigned. “This edition will be slightly different than usual. There are some tickets for screenings at the Parktheater [and Pand P – ed],” says Daan.

“When those are sold out, there will be an online version. So, if you have a ticket, you can watch the film there.”

Virtual tour

The festival opens on Thursday, 7 January, with a special screening. It runs through to 10 January. The live stream allows visitors to take a virtual tour of century-old city films from across the Netherlands.

Tickets cost either €25 (basic), or €25 or €50 (sponsor and sponsor plus). The basic ticket gives you (digital) access to the entire festival. Different rates apply for physically attending the films in the theatres.

The Sponsor options make you, as the name implies, a sponsor. “Apart from our appreciation, you will be mentioned on our website, if you so choose,” reads the NSFF website. You can buy your tickets on the NSFF website.
