Ketelhuisplein at Strijp-S cleared due to crowds

0

Yesterday the police emptied the square and the lawn near the Ketelhuis at Strijp-S. It was getting too crowded.

In the course of the afternoon, the square became increasingly crowded with people who wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather on their free King’s Day.

According to a reporter on the scene, policemen walked in a line across the square to ‘sweep’ it clean. Everyone was ordered to leave or face arrest. Two young women refused to leave and were taken away by the police.

More places were crowded yesterday afternoon – Karpendonkse Plas, Henri Dunantpark, Ton Smitspark, Philips de Jonghpark, Anne Frankplantsoen, and Lex & Edo Hornemannplantsoen. At the beginning of the evening, the municipality issued a call for people to go home.

King Willem-Alexander to drive historic royal DAF car during Eindhoven visit

0

There is only one of DAF’s so-called Kini cars in existence. DAF engineers built the small, roofless car with no doors in 1967 as a gift to Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus to celebrate Willem-Alexander’s birth. After being on display at the DAF Museum for several years, Willem-Alexander will drive it again during his King’s Day visit to Eindhoven on Tuesday.

The car’s unique design was intended to allow the royals to enjoy warm weather journeys. Photographers captured a young Willem-Alexander sitting on his mother’s lap as his father drove it.

Part of the King’s visit to Eindhoven includes watching a parade of cars that have been designed and made in the Eindhoven region. One of those cars is the Kini. ‘Willem-Alexander himself already indicated that he’s looking forward to driving the Kini on Tuesday,’ says Geert Vermeer, the DAF Museum’s chairman.

‘Special’

‘It took a lot of effort to get the car ready,’ Vermeer explains. ‘The car was on the first floor, right at the back of the museum. The entire museum had to be rearranged to get it out, but it worked in the end.’

The blue car has the King’s name etched onto it. Vermeer says, ‘it’s special to let the King drive the car again. It’s an honour.’

Eindhoven Box Cup 2021 canceled

The fifth edition of the Eindhoven Box Cup, which was to happen from 20 to 24 May, has been canceled.

Earlier, the organisation announced that the tournament would continue because of the sponsorship from Jack’s Casino. The casino would compensate for the lack of paying spectators at the event. Specifically, it was announced that 200 boxers would compete.

However, due to the persistent corona situation, many athletes receive negative travel advice to come to the Netherlands. Therefore, the selections from various Asian countries, Russia, Ireland and England, have withdrawn from participation in the tournament.

As a result, the organisation cannot deliver the quality as previous editions. That is why, in consultation with the international boxing association AIBA, the organisation decided to cancel the tournament.

The Eindhoven Box Cup is the only AIBA tournament in the Netherlands and is supported by the NOC * NSF. The tournament was also cancelled last year due to the corona crisis.

Special caravan, pastry-eating lessons for royal family

0

Members of the Royal Family will receive a crash course in eating a tompouce (a typical Dutch pastry) on King’s Day in Eindhoven, and they will pass by in a caravan of special cars.

A large part of the programme can already be seen online via this website.

This year, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and the three princesses will visit Eindhoven on this public holiday. Due to COVID-19, the party is mainly online. The Royal Family will be at the High Tech Campus on the day.

They will arrive in a caravan of cars manufactured in the region, such as an old DAF and Lightyear’s new solar car. The family will also be working on 3D printing of food and sim racing, among other things.

In addition to the programme with the royal family, there are also other parties to visit digitally during King’s Day.

Kids, teens summer holiday camps

0

Summer holidays are just a few months away. And, this year, more than ever, kids are chomping at the bit for something to do.

And, fortunately, there’s quite a bit to keep them busy. There’s a free camp in Eindhoven at the end of July – ‘Engels for Bengels’. This educational, five-day camp is just for primary school pupils.

The programme includes sports, dancing, creativity and, most of all, fun. What’s more, all the lessons are in English. The children are divided by age, and the programme is suite them.

Small groups

The small groups allow for a lot of individual attention. There are no lessons on the last afternoon. Then it’s time for high tea.

Parents and family members are invited to come and see what their kids have been up to. The children will also receive their Summer Camp certificate. The camp is rounded off with a performance, given by the children, of course.

Your kids are welcome from 26 to 30 July between 08:00 and 16:00 on each day. If you need to bring or collect them later, there is a fee involved. You can register your children here.

Teens

The same organisation is also hosting a camp for older children – Teen Camp. This is a one or two-week camp for 11 to 17-year-olds. It’s held at Assumburg Castle, near Amsterdam.

Here, too there are lessons explicitly aimed at helping the campers improve their English. Their days will also be filled with sport, art, dancing, and singing. And if they stay for two weeks, they will take an overnight trip to Amsterdam.

It will cost €795 for a week, and €1,745 for two weeks. This price includes everything and free Teen Camp merchandise. You can find more information here.

There’s also more information about these camps and lots of other fun activities for your children at Kidsproof.nl. There’s everything from counting bees to biking puzzle tours.

Commemoration cancelled

Every year, on 4 May, the Netherlands remembers its dead. Those who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the beginning of the Second World War.

And every year, women and children’s who have perished are commemorated at the VrouwenVredesmonument (Women’s Peace Monument) on Parklaan. But, not this year. “The reasons for this are obvious and need no further explanation,” the Eindhoven Stichting Vredesburo (Peace Office Foundation), writes on their website.

They organise this annual event. The organising committee does, however, call for a personal commemoration. “It shouldn’t pass by silently.”

‘More relevant than ever’

“The people who attend every year should feel that it doesn’t matter. On the contrary, we consider it more relevant than ever. Women are still disproportionately affected by violence.”

“We hope everyone will find a chance to take pause in their own way and find a way to express themselves. Lay a flower, write a poem, compose a song. Use the (social media) channels that are available,” says the organisation.

Eindhoven’s Peace Office Foundation wants people to remember all these fallen souls in a special way. “Carry out the message that violence can’t be justified. One victim is one too many.”

“We hope to meet at the monument again next year. But this year, everyone will have to have their own small commemoration,” writes the foundation. For information about this Eindhoven commemoration, please contact the Peace Bureau.

No operator for Nuenen beach pool?

After 25 years, Laco Nederland is no longer the operator of beach pool Nuenen. The municipality must find a new operator before 1 May.

“It is a surprise that all the parties with whom intensive talks have been held haven’t signed up as operators”, Councillor Joep Pernot says.

Laco uses sports and leisure facilities throughout the Netherlands. The ground lease agreement between Laco and the Municipality of Nuenen expired at the end of 2019. According to Councillor Pernot, the company didn’t want to extend the agreement because it says that it had been making a loss for 25 years.

“I have concluded from this that we must find an operator with a good business plan so that he can earn from it”, the councillor says. According to him, this doesn’t mean that without an operator, swimming won’t be possible. “We could remove the fences even if there is no operator”, he says.

Additional activities

The municipality spoke with several parties about additional activities. “The municipality wanted larger activities for ten thousand visitors. We indicated that this was not our starting point and that we wanted to remain small-scale,” Laco director Bert Lavrijsen says.

“That’s what the public wants. “According to Councillor Pernot, it’s a surprise that all parties, including Laco, haven’t signed up as operators.

“Intensive discussions have been held with all parties”, Alderman Pernot says. Laco withdrew as a party in the tendering procedure. “We had to accept all conditions. Otherwise, the registration would be invalid. That was not feasible for us,” says Lavrijsen.

No large events of 10,000 visitors

The councillor indicates that it will still be possible to swim in the future. But “the operator has to earn a living” in a different way than Laco currently does. He denies that there has been any talk of events for thousands or tens of thousands of visitors.

According to him, the municipality isn’t considering large events such as Dance Valley. “We have said that if we keep doing what we have always done, we’ll get what we have always gotten”, Councillor Pernot says.

According to him, the people of Nuenen can’t expect large-scale events; they can move to the Gulbergen for that. It’s possible, however, for the pool to be used for other purposes besides swimming, such as for outdoor sports clubs or diving clubs. “We could allow leisure activities”, the councillor says.

Despite the uncertainty about who the new operator of the swimming pool will be, the catering area will remain the property of Laco.

Foodie walks allowed again

After political lobbying at several municipalities, culinary take-away walks are now allowed again.

These have to be done under certain conditions. You can take a food tour, as long as it’s not officially organised. But, that doesn’t you can’t guide yourself along in some kind of way.

This is where WinjSpijs (Wine and Dine) comes in. This company has been organising weekly culinary walking tours for the last ten years. Since restaurants are closed, these can’t currently take place.

Take-away tours

But WinjSpijs wants to support these establishments. So, they recently launched WijnSpijs Take Away walks in more than 20 Dutch cities, including Eindhoven. In April and May, people can take the culinary take away walk past five or six restaurants in a city like Eindhoven.

The Eindhoven take-away walks begin this weekend. For €33, you can get five small meals from five of the city’s top restaurants. You can buy your tickets here.

Tickets are valid on both days (Saturday and Sunday). You can choose which day you want to take the self-guided tour. Or you can split it over both days, as long as you visit each restaurant only once.

‘What’s possible’

“Together with the hospitalty industry, we focus on what’s possible instead of what’s not,” says Wouter Dijkstra WijnSpijs‘ director. “This entrepreneurial mindset is common to the Eindhoven eateries.”

All this is, of course, done completely ‘corona-proof’ and according to the National Health Department rules. It’s also done within the city council’s legal framework. Here’s what you can and can’t do:

  • You choose your route past the restaurants. The WijnSpijs app can help you decide the order.
  • You walk on your own ( two people/one household max) at your own pace, between 12:00 and 18:00.
  • There’s no starting point, time slots, fixed routes or registration.

Not only do you get to try out great food, you support local businesses too. “As much as 85% of our ticket sales go toward supporting the participating restaurants and bars,” says WijnSpijs‘ Jaap Le Poole. “They desperately need this.”

Large venues may open conditionally

Several large venues can open their doors to the public again this month.

That’s following a government announcement. On Tuesday, the cabinet said it’s starting pilot projects to test accessibility tests practical effects. So, stadiums, venues and casinos in the country may reopen.

In the region, this concerns the Muziekgebouw, Natlab, Parktheater, Effenaar, and Jack Casino. PSV is also allowed to welcome fans again during the next home match against FC Groningen. That’s after months of lockdown.

Venues can hold some events under certain conditions. For example, visitors must have proof of a negative COVID-19 test the cabinet has announced.

Music, sport, and gambling

From 16 to 18 April, the Muziekgebouw (350), Natlab (42) and Parktheater (250) are allowed to admit visitors. On 24 April, it’s Jacks Casino’s turn, with 350 visitors. On that day, PSV is permitted to receive 4,000 supporters for the game against FC Groningen.

For the other professional football club in the city, FC Eindhoven, a maximum of 450 fans applies on 30 April. The first division club then plays against FC Den Bosch. That weekend, 130 people can also visit the Effenaar. The Eindhoven music venue will let people who want to attend an event know in advance what to do.

“It’s good news, but it really surprised us,” PSV commercial director, Frans Janssen, says. “We’re happy about this. But, it naturally raises many questions.”

“For our fans, but certainly for us too. We’ll now consult with the authorities concerned. Then we’ll communicate how we deal with this situation.”
