This is what you can do in the Eindhoven region during carnival

0

Just over a week and then carnival will start again. There are plenty of parties and parades planned in the Eindhoven region, so here is a schedule of some of the expected events taking place:

Eindhoven

Just like last year, there are large tents on three squares in Eindhoven. The Bavaria Bierhal is located on Stadhuisplein. A different activity takes place here every day, including three hours of Weijer, mini tie children’s carnival and stepping.

There is also a tent on the Markt. Every day, artists such as Lamme Frans, Monique Smit and Vieze Jack take the stage here. The tent is especially popular among the youth. The third tent is on the Wilhelminaplein. This is mainly for the public who are fans of the more traditional Eindhoven carnival.

The grand parade of Lampegat is on February 18. This starts at 12:41 with the children’s running groups.

Mierlo

In Mierlo there are two carnival associations that provide a full program. CV De Kersepit organizes four evenings with performances in café De Koffer. There is a children’s carnival on Sunday and Monday afternoon.

CV De Spruwwejagers also provides a multi-day programme. Various artists, including Jan Biggel and Geen Stempel will perform in ‘t Mierles Huukske. On Monday morning you can hang out with an egg sandwich. To conclude, they organize an evening eating herring on Saturday 25 February.

The big parade of Mierlo is on Carnival Saturday. This time the motto of the parade is: Wai dreije wir!

Geldrop

Also in Geldrop there is no sitting still during carnival. Carnival starts there on Friday afternoon with music by DJ Roel.

On Saturday and Sunday evening, various artists will perform at Heerenhuys 23. Monday afternoon it’s time to pull out the farmer’s smock. Then there is a farmer’s smock afternoon.

The Geldrop parade can be seen on Sunday afternoon.

Waalre

In Waalre they start early. Friday morning at 08:30 Youth Prince Levi and Prince Giel will visit various schools in Aalst, Waalre and Veldhoven. In the evening, Prince Giel and Erik d’n twidde will tap the first keg of Dommelsch Carnival beer during the twinning of Keiengat and Bremspoersengat.

On Sunday afternoon there is a masquerade ball and on Monday evening various mop orchestras will perform in the Oude Toren. The big parade of Waalre is on Saturday. Afterwards there will be music in the Oude Toren.

Nuenen

Nuenen caters for all ages. The senior carnival ball will start on Friday afternoon. People over 50 are welcome to enjoy live music, singing and dancing.

For the children there is a children’s carnival in the monastery on Saturday and Monday afternoon. There is also plenty to do for teenagers. A five-day teenage carnival is organized in the Residence.

After two years of no parade due to corona, it will continue this year. That’s on Sunday afternoon.

Veldhoven

In Veldhoven, carnival celebrations start on Friday evening with the real sing-along during Echt Veldhovenz Luidkeels. The children’s parade is on Saturday. After the procession, the key to the city is handed over.

The grand parade of Rommelgat can be seen on Sunday. The key to the city will be returned on Tuesday evening.

Renovated Van Gogh Village Museum popular

It was closed for six months, but after its opening, the renovated Van Gogh Village museum in Nuenen is attracting a lot of attention. People come from far and wide to view the life of the Brabant master painter. Also Nuenen residents see a whole new museum which brings out, for some, a piece of childhood sentiment.

The former Vincentre has been expanded with an exhibition space and a new wing, and this has not gone unnoticed by visitors. “We are from Amsterdam ourselves and today is a day with bad weather anyway, so it was a good idea to visit a museum. Vincent van Gogh’s art has stolen my heart and here in Nuenen, of course, you see that emphatically reflected”, one of the visitors explained.

“I am originally from Australia and am now in the Netherlands for two months. My parents are Dutch and I therefore want to get to know better where my roots lie”, another woman told Studio040.

Nuenen residents
So international visitors, although Nuenen residents are also curious about the renovated museum. “I grew up in Nuenen, the film was for me a kind of recognition tour through my youth. I saw places in nature where I have been and where I played as a little girl”, one woman explained.

“I volunteer at the museum. I hadn’t been there yet after the renovation,” a man says. “It has become a real museum. Very spacious, lively and also challenging. When you come through the main hall, you can’t believe your eyes. It just looks like the old Van Gogh museum no longer exists. It is very impressive, especially the Light Lab created in collaboration with ASML. I have read that you need at least three hours to read and see everything, so this does invite you to come back,” said the volunteer.

Queen Máxima
Visitors agree and thus have nothing but praise for the revamped Van Gogh Village museum. Especially his life and painting techniques attract visitors’ attention. On 16 May, Queen Máxima will officially open the renovated Van Gogh museum. With the new renovation, the museum aims to grow to 40 thousand visitors a year.

Sinterklaas celebrations in the city centre

Sinterklaas will visit Eindhoven again this year. The ‘goedheiligman’ (good saint) and his attendants called ‘Pieten’ can be seen on the 18 Septemberplein on November 12th. Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem will welcome the distinguished guest to our city. Many excited children will no doubt be there to cheer when he arrives. Sinterklaas and company will arrive at 13.00.

The programme includes a performance by Mikey and Megan, and there is a surprise act on the square. Then, at 14:45, Sinterklaas will ride through the centre on his horse Ozosnel. During that trip, there will be a stopover at the Van Piere bookshop, where a poem for the Good Saint will be recited.

After a procession through the city centre, Sinterklaas arrives at the Heuvel around 15:45. For this occasion, the shopping centre has been transformed into a true ‘Pietjes’ paradise.

Children can enjoy face painting, crafts and cake decorations, play games and of course sing and wave to the Saint. The activities are credited with stamps and a full set of stamps is rewarded with a Pietendiploma.

At around 16.30, Sinterklaas says goodbye and leaves with the Pieten to his residence.

Red balloons and blue skies – Is this GLOW 2020?

0

Residents all over Eindhoven have been wondering what’s going on.

There’s a strange glow in the city. In various places, blue light can be seen. What exactly’s going on is unclear.

There’s much speculation on social media. For example, it could have something to do with the GLOW light festival. This event, in its usual form, has been cancelled.

It would be irresponsible to have a long line of 750,000 people stroll through the city. They’d usually be admiring the light artworks along the way.

Red balloons too?

Red balloons also appeared above buildings in many parts of the city. This doesn’t seem to be a coincidence either. GLOW’s organisers haven’t give any explanation.

But only say, cryptically, “GLOW has asked everyone to make a dot. Children must hang them in front of their windows. The city on people’s roofs.”

Last week it was already announced that GLOW has had people make special ‘GLOW Dots’. This was in cooperation with the Ontdekfabriek and the Eindhoven primary schools.

The city’s children used these to make their own light artworks. Kids and their parents can still take part in this.

PSV on track to make Champions League play-offs

0

Can PSV secure their spot in the play-offs of the Champions League on Wednesday 29th of August? Thats the big question. But what we do know, is that they are well on their way.

By beating their rival Bate Borisov in the last round of the qualifications, with 2-3 in the away game, PSV has a good chance to qualify during their home match. Even a draw, or even 0-1 or 1-2 loss, will do to reach the very lucrative group stages of the world famous UEFA Champions League. But of course PSV will fight for a victory to qualify with dignity.

PSV has a long history in the Champions League, after winning the European Cup in 1988, they were among the first teams in 1992, when the UEFA decided to change the traditional knock-out model of the competition, to one with group stages. This got extended over the years and now grown to the billion dollar tournament. It may have lost some of its charm, but sure attracts a lot of attention, money and top-players.

If PSV manages to qualify again, it means a huge boost for their budget, and may bring some of the best international football stars to compete against, in at least 3 home games. Typically the atmosphere at the European matches is much more vibrant than the average national league match.

There are still a few tickets available, so if you are willing to join, check here quickly. If you dont manage to get tickets, get at least to the city center for some pre-match fun (especially at Stratums Eind) and watch the match in a bar between the locals for some extra atmosphere. The match starts at 21.00, the pre-match any time you like.

La Fura dels Baus plays Manus in the Parktheater

0

The famous Catalan theatre company La Fura dels Baus is coming to Parktheater in Eindhoven from 12 to 15th September 2018.

The Philipszaal will transform into a ‘Black Box’, a picturesque space without seating where everything is possible. You will be able to stand, walk or move among the actors who will involve you in their performance.

With Manes, the group is returning to the original form of La Fura dels Baus’ productions from the 80s: primitive, harsh and violent. We live in a society that is no longer dominated by humans, but by technology. Manes confronts and immerses you in your most animalistic nature. The boundary between actor and audience fades. La Fura dels Baus performs throughout the world and leaves its audiences surprised, dismayed, discouraged or irritated. Let yourself be challenged by these masters of disruption.

This unique show, co-produced with Parktheater Eindhoven, is on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, running for four days. It will start at 20.30 and will cost €24.50.

No marathon? Jan runs anyway

Eindhoven resident, Jan Galema, doesn’t need to take part in the official Eindhoven marathon.

It was cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak. Galema, who’s 74, decided to run anyway. He covered a distance of more than 21 kilometres on Sunday. Accompanied by supporters from family and friends, Jan collected a €900 for charity.

Jan’s a trained distance runner. He’s taken part in half-marathons no less than nine times. But they were always with onlookers and on a marked course.

Didn’t get put off

You can walk on these, not hindered by crossing traffic, traffic lights and other delays. The prospect of stumbling along at a self-planned half-marathon, didn’t prevent Galema from fulfilling his plan. There was a nice extra goal to achieve – raise money for the cancer organisation, KWF. Jan is a cancer survivor himself.

With a solid plate of pasta and many training kilometres behind him, Jan started his round on Sunday at 14:00. It led from Woensel, via Tongelre (‘t Hofke), Eindhoven centre, Lijmbeek, and Achtse Barrier. The predicted bad weather didn’t concern Jan.

“I’ll just take shelter if it hails or storms,” he said. It didn’t get that far. Except for a bit drizzling, the weather held. Only Jan’s forehead didn’t keep dry.

Support

Galema had included the home addresses of family and friends in his route. They, in turn, walked with him in relay form. “Hopefully, this will give him wings”, daughter-in-law Amber remarked.

Jan didn’t seem to need encouragement. “That just distracts him. Company is enough for him to keep him going.”

Jan remarked on that. “That really helped. You always have moments in a race when things start to hurt. I had that now at 13 kilometres. But with this support, I didn’t really feel it.”

Took 2.5 hrs

Tired but satisfied, and with loud applause from neighbours, Jan finally crossed the line after more than 2.5 hours. It was at his house on Liviuslaan.

He had enjoyed it, he said, still panting. “I did go wrong somewhere. But, fortunately, we realised that quickly enough. That made it a bit longer than that a half-marathon.”

Marianne, Jan’s husband, had cycled the whole trip behind him. She was, naturally, very proud. “It was a day with a golden lining, with all our family and friends present,” she says.
