‘Asparagus in the Fields’ moves to Veldhoven

0

The fifth edition of the Asperges op de Velden (Asparagus in the Fields) event will not take place in Nuenen but in Veldhoven. The pop-up restaurant is to move to a new location.

The restaurant is to be set up, for this fifth-anniversary edition, in the John Kelders Asparagus nursery’s fields in Veldhoven. In particular, this venue is a lot more spacious than Raaijmakers Hoeve in Nuenen where the event has taken place every time so far. There is more space to ‘set the restaurant up more creatively’, the organisers give as a reason for the move. There is also more parking space in the neighbourhood.

This year, Asparagus in the Fields will be held from 15 to 30 May.

Ketelhuisplein at Strijp-S cleared due to crowds

0

Yesterday the police emptied the square and the lawn near the Ketelhuis at Strijp-S. It was getting too crowded.

In the course of the afternoon, the square became increasingly crowded with people who wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather on their free King’s Day.

According to a reporter on the scene, policemen walked in a line across the square to ‘sweep’ it clean. Everyone was ordered to leave or face arrest. Two young women refused to leave and were taken away by the police.

More places were crowded yesterday afternoon – Karpendonkse Plas, Henri Dunantpark, Ton Smitspark, Philips de Jonghpark, Anne Frankplantsoen, and Lex & Edo Hornemannplantsoen. At the beginning of the evening, the municipality issued a call for people to go home.

Lampegat can go wild again after years: ‘Glad we can party again’

Costumes, beer, music and confetti. The ideal recipe for a successful party. During the Lampegatse Federatiebal* (lampegat federation ball), the kickoff was given for the Eindhoven carnaval (carnival).

Due to corona, the party could not be celebrated for years, and it showed among the visitors. Ivo Soetens, chairman of the Federatiebal, says: ”It is more popular than ever. People want to be together again. Tickets were always sold out quickly but now there seems to be even more demand”.

Sinterklaas visits the ball
People have dressed up immensely for the festivities. For example, there is a Sinterklaas who “didn’t realise” that carnaval has really started now. There are also men dressed as construction men. ”We worked hard on the construction site today so now we get to celebrate extensively”, one of the men said.

During the ball, the new prince was also presented: Thijs Scheffers will be Prins (prince) Kachelaan for the next few weeks.

Federatiebal (federation ball): ball/party to say goodbye to last year’s prince and announcing the new one. In Eindhoven it takes place mostly a week before carnaval.

300 people at Eindhoven Fiets 3-Daagse’s 1st day

0

The 30th edition of the Eindhoven Fiets 3-Daagse (Three-day Cycling Event) started on Tuesday on Oude Bosschebaan in Eindhoven.

More than 300 cyclists arrived at 09:00 to register for this edition of this event. Until Thursday, 8 August, young and old can cycle through the nature of Brabant. All routes are on paved roads, so people riding recumbents and mobility scooters can participate too. Registration is possible at the start and endpoint: the Paviljoen on Oude Bosschebaan.

There are three different distances that participants can register for: the 40, 50, and 75-kilometre routes. There are also plenty of arrangements for cyclists. For example, there are E-bike charging points at the rest areas, and participants receive refreshments while they are on their way.

It costs €7 to take part for the three days. Entry fee per day is €3. Children up to the age of twelve can take part for free. You can start every day between 09.00 and 13:00. This event is organised by the local riding club, TCWoensel.

High-tech bench from Fontys students to light festival in London

The high-tech bench of Fontys students with more than 11,000 lights already seen at Glow, now goes to a light festival in London.

The special project ‘Vera Lumen’ was created by students from Fontys Engineering. During the Eindhoven Light Festival Glow it attracted a lot of interest, but now the bench goes to Winter Lights in London.

Heartbeat

In the wooden bench, sensors are placed in the armrests to measure your heart rate. The heartbeat is converted into a light spectacle. Your visual heartbeat runs into that of your bench mate.

Winter Lights takes place in Canary Wharf in London’s Tower Hamlets district. It is a light festival with interactive artworks. The festival takes place from 15 to 26 January.

‘Typical Eindhoven’ So What’s Next Jazz festival celebrates 10th edition

On 28, 29 and 30 October, the tenth edition of the So What’s Next Jazz Festival will take place at the Muziekgebouw. A reason for the festival to go for it, especially after previous editions could only go on in slimmed-down form.

“Yes that’s right. Last year we had to deal with downsized hall attendance, the year before that it was online. We are happy that this edition can take place again as the festival was intended initially. At least that is what we assume, although clearly corona is not completely gone. This year we hope to welcome around 1,500 visitors again on the Saturday”.

Speaking is Barend Fransen, a former board member of the festival but involved for the first time this year in putting together the program. Fransen is also founder of the renowned jazz band Gare du Nord.

“I think you can also see that in the program of So What’s Next”, Fransen says. “Because the festival actually wants the same thing that we also want with Gare du Nord: not to be pigeonholed. That applies very much to contemporary jazz anyway”, Fransen says.

“Because if there is one genre that is always looking for the cross-connections, it is jazz. From electro to hip-hop, jazz can be heard in almost everything. And we want to exploit that fact at the festival. I dare say that this edition will be the most broad and versatile edition so far”.

From Los Angeles to Turkey
So where does this versatility lie? Fransen explains, “One of the biggest names we have is Lady Blackbird. A hugely talented singer from Los Angeles, someone who I expect the whole world will know in six months. From the other side, we have the Ashley Henry Trio, from the London hip-hop scene, and Karsu, who interweaves jazz music with influences from Turkish music”.

“But besides that, we also have, for example, the Archie Shepp Quartet”, Fransen continues. “Shepp is an old jazz pioneer from New York, who is now 85 but still influential. That’s what makes him so special. And his presence also tells something about the music movement, about where it comes from”.

Ultimately, this versatility, the eclectic program, is also why the festival fits Eindhoven so well, Fransen explains. “The cross-connections you see in our program, that’s what we’re always working on in Eindhoven. We are always working on innovation, we never ask ourselves here, ‘is it possible?’ but rather, ‘why not?’ “.

And with that attitude, So What’s Next also distinguishes itself from other jazz festivals in the province of Brabant, the organiser believes. “If you look at the Breda Jazz Festival, it is a bit more traditional – a fantastic festival by the way. Jazz in Duke Town in Den Bosch focuses more on Dutch talent and what it all has to offer”.

A broad audience
“We also have a somewhat more international approach – which also suits our audience. And we aim for a broad program. The nice thing about having such a diverse range of music, is that you get a diverse audience. That is perhaps the best thing about So What’s Next”, Fransen concludes.
