Eindhoven puts graffiti on display in new City-tour

Graffiti, tags, murals and other wall-painting.. Eindhoven has transformed itself into an open-air museum for graffiti-artists. This inspired a tourism agency to organise cycling tours of the most remarkable wall art in the city. With a taxi-driver as your guide.

The tour takes the public through tunnels, viaducts and to respectable and less-respectable places. Places which have their own stories to tell and finally have the opportunity to share. For example, the wall art in Woensel-West was commissioned by woningcorporatie Trudo. Inventors that played a role in Eindhoven’s foundation as a city and also have streets named after them were used as inspiration for the art.

Also, De Berenkuil can’t be omitted from the tours: the hall of fame for spray-paint artists. A place with it’s own rules. The group determined who will have to opportunity to use the “blank canvas”. “In the past these decisions were made by fighting it out,” says graffiti-artist Patrick van den Horst. “Currently we have better ways of interacting and solve problems on friendly terms.”

Thursday evening a television programme on Studio040 will provide further information regarding the new Streetart Tour. The tours will be launched next week.

Liberator of Eindhoven Joe Cattini surprised with two awards: ‘That’s too much honor’

Turning 100 is already special, but for Briton Joe Cattini that milestone got an extra twist. One of the last remaining liberators of Eindhoven was surprised on his birthday with two awards by a delegation from the city he liberated. “That’s too much honor.”

Not only has Cattini been named an honorary citizen of the city, he is also the winner of the very first Local Hero Award.

Surprise

In the company of friends and family, Cattini celebrated his 100th birthday in his homeland last Tuesday. It was actually the intention that the Briton would be at a concert specially organized for him in Eindhoven a few days earlier, but he had to miss out due to his fragile health.

So an Eindhoven delegation traveled to England to put him in the spotlight, and not without reason. In September 1944, as a young boy, Cattini fought to liberate Eindhoven from the Nazis. That this was not devoid of dangers, is once again apparent from the speech of mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem.

“Joe Cattini was on the front line time and time again. He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. His friend next to him was fatally injured by shrapnel, but Joe was not injured.”

The war continued

Cattini is not only praised for his struggle on the battlefield, but also for his efforts after the war. For the British, the Second World War did not end after the collapse of the Third Reich in May 1945.

Cattini has regularly visited Eindhoven in recent years. He attended the traditional torch parade last September and visited schools to pass on the story of the war to new generations. “That was always one of the conditions when he came to the Netherlands,” explains the chairman of the 18 September Foundation, Peter Kemp. “He insisted on going to schools to tell his story.”

Honorary citizen

Cattini has been rewarded with two awards for his participation in the bloody battle for the Eindhoven region and his unbridled commitment to make young people understand the value of freedom. He has been granted honorary citizenship of the city. This brings the Englishman to an illustrious list that includes football coach Guus Hiddink, swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband and former mayors Rein Welschen and Rob van Gijzel.

The Local Hero Award was also presented to Cattini. He is the namesake and face of that prize. From now on, every two years, the award will be given to a young person who has shown exceptional drive and determination for a cause, belief or individual, despite setbacks.

Lights go out in Eindhoven and Geldrop for ‘Nacht van de Nacht’

0

In Eindhoven and Geldrop, the lights will go out in public places on Saturday evening to draw attention to waste of energy.

The ‘Nacht van de Nacht‘ campaign by nature and environmental organizations is supported in many places in the country. In Eindhoven, the LED screens on the Markt will be turned off, just like the lights on ten approach roads, at the VVV Brandstore and on the mast at bus station Neckerspoel. The Lichtnaald on the Beukenlaan also remains dark, as well as the illumination of the Catharinakerk.

Geldrop-Mierlo also participates. The church in Geldrop and the mill in Mierlo will not be illuminated on Saturday night.

According to the municipality of Eindhoven, the city is already consciously dealing with light. For example, lighting is dimmed at night to save energy. Companies can take part in the campaign and sign up via the website www.nachtvandenacht.nl.

First female employees of Philips honoured

The ‘Maria Boogersstraat’ and the ‘Adriana van Buullaan’ could just become new street names on Strijp-S. The municipality of Eindhoven would like to honour the first two female employees employed by the company.

They both started in 1891, when the electronics group also started in Eindhoven. Gerard and Anton Philips, who formed the basis of the company, mainly hired girls to assemble light bulbs. Van Buul and Boogers (both born in 1879) therefore as the very first.

Lamp makers

Many companies are now trying to find a good balance between men and women in the workplace. “Philips has been involved in this from the outset,” says Rik Thijs, alderman for public space. “Since its foundation, the company has employed many women who were specially recruited to make lamps.”

Many employees in the early days of Philips were called ‘lamp makers’. A statue was once erected for that group. The municipality now wants to express its appreciation to the first two employees with the street names.

The municipality is currently looking for relatives of both women.

Philips Museum to open with special exhibition

0

When the relaxation of the anti-corona measures takes effect on 1 June, the Philips Museum will also open its doors.

Just over a week later, on Tuesday, 9 June, the museum will also open a new exhibition called ‘Eendracht maakt macht’ (‘Unity creates power’). The exhibition shows visitors how, from the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Eindhoven, together with Philips and PSV, grew into the current metropolitan area. The story is of how a modest Dutch town became a high-tech international region, from Frits Philips’ point of view.

The museum also has a modest first – for the first time, people can go on an audio tour. It is voiced by Dutch television and film actor, Frank Lammers. The museum opens its doors on Monday, 1 June, at 12:00. Anyone who wants to visit the museum must buy online tickets.

People must also follow other safety rules. There are, unfortunately, no guided tours.

BeestenBende Geldrop-Mierlo wins prize for sustainability

The volunteers of De BeestenBende Geldrop-Mierlo recently won the Professional Jury Award for Sustainability. They won this in the category ‘Cleaning up Locally’.

The Awards for Sustainability are specifically intended for ‘sustainable initiatives that strengthen quality of life and connection’. In its jury report, the Professional Jury especially praises the energy that a whole new generation of school children (and their parents) put into their clean-up rounds.

Nationally, more than 15,000 children and their parents have registered to help over the past twenty years. The BeestenBenders have also been active in Geldrop-Mierlo since 2014, under the motto: ‘Then something happens!’.

BeestenBenders go out in teams with clippers and waste bags to clean up litter and thus ensure a cleaner living environment for people and animals. As a reward for their hard work, De BeestenBenders experience exciting ‘animal adventures’ all year round.

Over the past twenty years, De BeestenBende has grown into a movement with thousands of members from all over the Netherlands, with dozens of municipalities, housing associations and even care groups having joined.

Cultural Prize nominees announced

0

The ten nominees for the Cultuurprijs (Cultural Prize) have been selected by the Cultuurraad (Culture Council).

For the Stimuleringsprijs (Stimulation Prize), Modulab, PLASMA, Wall Street, Warehouse of Innovation, and Wildpark have been chosen. Agnes van Dijk, Angelo Martinus, Miggs de Bruijn, The Ruggeds, and United Cowboys have been nominated for the Waarderingsprijs (Appreciation Prize).

A total of 45 different institutions, creators, and initiatives were nominated. Together with the Cultuurraad, Chairman Maria van der Aalsvoort paid particular attention to these nominees’ added value for Eindhoven.

What do they mean for the city’s culture?

“This year, too, we as the Cultuurraad were mainly guided by what the nominees mean for the cultural field – which initiatives, makers, and institutions surprise and inspire”, Maria says. “For both the Stimuleringsprijs and the Waarderingsprijs, we have selected parties that enrich the cultural field of Eindhoven in a special way”.

The Stimuleringsprijs is awarded to an institution, creator or initiative that has existed for less than five years and holds particular promise for culture in Eindhoven. The Waarderingsprijs is given to a creator or institution with a proven track record.

The Eindhoven Cultuurprijs will be awarded for the third time this year. A jury will choose the final winners. The prize consists of a sum of EUR7,500. In addition to both prizes, a Rabo Publieksprijs (Audience Prize), worth EUR7,500, will be awarded too.

Until 30 September, people can vote for their favourite nominee on the Eindhoven Cultural Prize’s website. The prize will be awarded on 30 October during a festive presentation in the Effenaar.
