Philips wins design award in Evoluon

Philips has won the DesignEuropa Award with a portable monitor that allows patients to be moved within a hospital and monitored at the same time.

Philips won the award in the category ‘Industry’. An added bonus was that the awards ceremony took place in the Evoluon in Eindhoven, making it a home game for Philips. Previous editions took place in Milan and Warsaw.

In the ‘Small and Emerging Businesses’ category, a lamp that mimics sunlight from the Italian company Relio2 won. A Lifetime Achievement Award was also handed out to the Catalan designer André Ricard. He designed, among other things, the torch for the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

The DesignEuropa Awards are organised by the EU Intellectual Property Office. The award was created to put industrial designers in the spotlight.

‘Old but not old-fashioned’: DAF Museum honours Italian designer

The DAF Museum dedicates an exhibition to the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti. The designer was of great importance for the appearance of DAF’s passenger cars.

Michelotti designed more than 1,200 cars for Alfa Romeo, BMW and Fiat, among others. For DAF, the Italian designed the DAF 44, the first DAF car to be produced in Born, in the factory where VDL subsidiary NedCar is now located.

“Michelotti has been enormously decisive for the appearance of the passenger car”, Geert Vermeer, chairman of the DAF Museum, says. “He not only was important for DAF, but for the whole car industry. He is one of the most important Italian car designers. That’s why the great thing about the exhibition is the amount of sketches we can show of what eventually became the DAF 44, but he also laid the first hands on the DAF 77, which eventually became the Volvo 343”, Vermeer says.

Glass surface
Vermeer is clear about what made Michelotti stand out. “The DAF 44 is one of the first cars that did not have a grill at the front. It did have a grill, but it was under the bumper. Moreover, it was one of the cars with the largest surface area of glass in its time. All in all, it is a timeless design. It is an old car, of course, but it is not old-fashioned”, Vermeer says.

There is also another special feature to the exhibition, according to Vermeer. “It is the first time that cars are exhibited that are not made by DAF, which is unique for us”, Vermeer says.

The exhibition starts on Saturday 16 October, 100 years after Michelotti’s birthday. His son Edgardo Michelotti will be present at the opening of the exhibition.

Theatres in region work together under the name Wonka

0

Six theatres in the Eindhoven region will work together under the name Wonka. Parktheater, De Schalm, Speelhuis, Hofnar, Cacaofabriek, and Kattendans have announced this in a statement.

Since last year, the theatres have been joining forces, but the six venues want to expand this further. They especially want to share their knowledge and experience in the field of technology, innovation and programming.
And because many internationals are living in the high-tech Brainport Region, the theatres also want more cooperation in the area of internationalisation.

The new name Wonka refers to factory director Willy Wonka from the famous Roald Dahl book ‘Sjakie en de chocoladefabriek’ (‘Sjakie/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’). ‘The character of Wonka brings wonder to the world and is a contrary pioneer for whom imagination is paramount. That is exactly how the venues envisage their collaboration’, the theatres write.

The joint programme can be found here. Several shows have a special label ‘No Dutch Required’. These performances are easily understandable or language is not an issue at all like with music and dance shows.

Member of Parliament opens new exhibition Cornelis le Mair

0

Artist Cornelis le Mair will be exhibiting his latest work in the VDL Art gallery in the Heuvel Galerie in the coming weeks. VVD MP Daan de Kort opened the exhibition last weekend.

The VVD MP, former Alderman in Veldhoven, still regularly visits the region for public activities. He finds it important to be visible in this region, as the only MP from South-East Brabant.

The exhibition of Le Mair shows mainly recent works by the Eindhoven artist, who is known for his style that contains many style elements of the ‘Great Masters’. Both portraits and still lifes will be on display.

VDL Art is the gallery of Daniëlle Verschuren and Jan van de Loo and has no relationship with the industrial group VDL. The work of Verschuren and Van de Loo can also be seen and purchased in the gallery.

The exhibition of Cornelis Le Mair is on view until 31 October.

DDW is back in full swing: exhibitions at almost ninety locations

0

The Dutch Design Week will be physically running at full speed again next month. Last year, the major Eindhoven design event held an online edition due to the corona pandemic, but that is not necessary this year.

This past spring, the organisation already announced that it was aiming for a physical event. That expectation is now also coming true, with the extra relaxation that will take effect next Saturday. Only DDW Music, with dozens of pop concerts in various venues, will not take place. However, there are exhibitions, workshops, and network meetings spread over about ninety locations in the city.

This year, designs will also reflect on the corona crisis, and addressing the question of where society is heading after this unusual period. As in every edition, experimental ideas from designers will be on display, as well as concrete solutions to social issues.

Ambassadors of the event this year are former Chief Government Architect Floris Alkemade and designer Christien Meindertsma, who studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven.

The DDW runs from 16 to 24 October.

Alternative for Valkenswaard flower parade – world opens up again!

0

The fourteen floats of the Valkenswaard flower parade, which were scattered around the village, attracted a lot of attention this weekend. Because of corona, there has been no parade for the floats for two years now. Nevertheless, this year the parade blossomed again.

The world opens up, is the theme of the neighbourhood Stadse Bergen. After corona, the world is slowly starting to move again. This is represented by an enormous display and a kind of mini-theatre performance. The spectators frequently make films and photographs and applaud profusely. There is plenty of enthusiasm in the audience. “This is something different,” is a comment often heard.

Alternative for flower parade

Enthusiasm or not, the wagon builders would have preferred a parade, says Erik Faasen of the Stadse Bergen hamlet. However, he does understand why this has not happened. “There has been consultation with the float builders and I thought this was a good alternative.” What he misses is the excitement. “Driving out of the tent, the parade, everything going well … you miss that.”

“I say: rather the corsovirus than the coronavirus,” says mayor Anton Ederveen about the alternative parade (corso). “It is a very nice format with a great result and people enjoy it”, says the mayor. “This is Valkenswaard at its best. But next year we will have the parade again with moving floats. I am looking forward to it!”

Public bonding

Enthusiasm about the alternative parade is also shared by Monique Arts from Valkenswaard marketing, the club that promotes Valkenswaard. “I think it will be just as busy as usual, only the event lasts two days and the floats are spread out, so you experience it differently”. She calls the set-up ‘super fun’.

“Because it is a full weekend, and there are objects on which you can actually take a photo. You don’t have that with a parade, so there is more of a bond with the public now.”

That bond with the public can be seen, for example, on the Market Square. There, people can have their picture taken in front of the float, which has a real photographer. It is very popular. “Valkenswaard, too beautiful to be captured”, is the appropriate title of the structure of the neighborhood Kompas.

Evolution due to corona

The parade may take a different form in the future. It could be held on Saturday and Sunday. Perhaps the corona woes will also lead to a renewal of the event. They will talk about that in Valkenswaard after the flower parade.

Illuminated sunflowers inspired by Van Gogh to go on display in Nuenen

0

A light installation inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflowers was a popular feature of Eindhoven’s Glow festival in 2019. This year the sunflowers will make a comeback – this time in Nuenen, where Van Gogh painted some of his most famous works more than a hundred years ago.

The sunflowers will go on display next to the Roosdonck windmill. The windmill lies close to the De Groot family’s farm. The family formed the inspiration for Van Gogh’s famous ‘De Aardappeleters’ (‘The Potato Eaters’).

The display is part of an initiative by Nuenen Council, the organisers behind Glow, and Van Gogh Brabant, an organisation preserving Van Gogh’s heritage. They state that the intention is to bring a ‘colourful homage’ to Van Gogh to the area.

The sunflower display was designed by light artists Hugo Vrijdag from Eindhoven, and Gu Yeliang from China. It was originally created for the 2019 edition of Glow, where they adorned the stairs outside the Witte Dame building.

Glow runs from 6 to 13 November this year.

Expats get to know the city again: “They have to feel at home here”

0

For the first time since the outbreak of corona a year and a half ago, there is a life tour of Eindhoven for expats again. It is being organised by the Holland Expat Center South.

The tour is meant  for helping new expats get to know the city, but is also  a network meeting place for social contacts. One of the guests is the Indian, Shrabashe. She has only lived in Eindhoven for a few months, where both she and her husband work. She says: “The contacts I have now are mainly colleagues from Tilburg University. I do enjoy meeting other expats who are also new here”.

The group of guests who join the tour is diverse. They come from the United States, Turkey, England or India, for example. Most of them have not lived here for long and are eager to get to know the city and our culture. Shrabashe: “I don’t find the difference in culture so difficult. I have lived in many different places and I have got used to having to adapt all the time. Here in the Netherlands, people are generally friendly and what is unique about the Netherlands is that we can talk to everyone in English. That’s more difficult in most other countries”.

Getting used to the new city

City guide Anneke Leenders takes great pleasure in showing these people around. She loves telling them about her city and is happy to help the newcomers with the challenges they face. Leenders: “One of the tricky things we encountered just now during the tour is our traffic regulations. The cycle path is really only for cyclists and the pavement for walking. Many expats don’t know that. During the tour, I can tell them how it works here”.

During the tour, guests learn many facts about the city, such as about Philips, the Sint Catharinakerk and where the entertainment areas are. “This helps the expats. They not only learn about the city, but they can also talk about it with friends and family. That way they feel more at home here,” Anneke Leenders says.

Expats or internationals

Josine Frankhuizen, from the Holland Expat Centre South, organises various activities for the expats. According to Frankhuizen, when the expats stay here longer, they are no longer called expats, but internationals: “Eindhoven wants to keep the knowledge we bring in as long as possible. That is why we try, as much as possible, to make the people who come to work here and their families feel at home here”.

The guided tour is a first step towards this. “You often see that the person who already works here has enough contacts through their work. The partner, often the woman, quickly becomes isolated. At the start tonight, they start talking to each other and make their first contacts. In addition, they now know who we are and we can help them further with, for example, finding work”, Frankhuizen says.

From now on, the tour is every first Friday of the month.

National Sports Week

0

Eindhoven is one of the five host cities of the Dutch National Sports Week (Nationale Sportweek). The National Sports Week will take place from Friday 17 September to Sunday 26 September 2021. The aim of the sports week is to enthuse and stimulate people to exercise and do sports.

In the past year, many sports have come to a halt due to the measures surrounding corona. Sports associations are slowly regaining the prospect of starting sports in phases according to the RIVM guidelines. With the National Sports Week (NSW), the Municipality of Eindhoven wants to highlight the large and especially diverse range of sports offered by sports providers in and around Eindhoven.

During this week, sports associations, clubs, schools, sports federations and municipalities work together to activate people to play sports and exercise. Because sport partly determines who we are, what we do, where and when. And above all, who we do it with. Participating in sports often means participating in society.

Welcome to the club

The National Sports Week coincides with the opening of the new sports season in September. Time for new opportunities and new members. That is why the ‘Welcome to the Club!’ is included in the National Sports Week on September 18 and 19. An event for all sports providers who want to open their doors to let Eindhoven residents get acquainted with their offer.

Sport does something to you

The theme of the National Sports Week this year is ‘sport does something to you’. Richard Kaper, sports participation manager at NOC*NSF: “During the National Sports Week we challenge everyone to discover what sport does to you. Because the Netherlands came to a standstill as a result of the corona crisis, it is extra important this year to show how nice it is to exercise and to experience how accessible sports clubs are actually for everyone. sports club.”

Doing sports together

Doing sports is also meeting others, having fun together. Through the event platform you can find other sports enthusiasts. Why not plan a run or walk together?
Here you can sign up for the National Sports Week Group.
