This is what the carnival parades looked like

Carnival floats, hopping people and rowdy crowds lining the sides. Dwèrsklippelgat, Krutjesgat and Klompengat were the scene of a festive carnival parade. See a photo impression below.

During Carnaval, all towns get a different name, chosen because of a historical and often humurous aspect.

Dwèrsklippelgat

Dwèrsklippelgat (Nuenen): a ‘dwèrsklippel’ is Brabant dialect for a naysayer, a person that always is against or a beam that lies transversly. A ‘gat’ is a tiny village.
According the oldest and most persistent story the name arose for the first time during work on Saint Clement’s Church. Workmen tried against their better judgment to carry a beam transversely through the doorway. Dwèrsklippel also refers to Nuenens weaving history as a part of a weaving loom.

Krutjesgat

This is the name for Son and Breugel during Carnaval.
It refers to the people of Son and Breugel who, a long time ago, used to collect pine cones in the forests to fire their stoves. And again, a ‘gat’ is a tiny village.

Klompengat

That is what Best is called during Carnaval. A ‘klomp’ is a clog and this is because of the clog industry in Best. In winter times, farmers used to make clogs as a side income and this worked well due mainly to the fact that poplars (Canidas trees) were found to grow well in this area.

Neighbourhood surprise delivery man Aydin with party

0

New shoes, a dress or a book, Aydin Aytekin has been delivering packages in the Woenselse Heide for almost fifteen years. He and his bus have now become such an indispensable part of the Eindhoven neighbourhood that the local residents surprised him with a party. “I always know what to say but in this situation I didn’t know how to react.”

And that surprise was not without reason, because in the eyes of the neighbourhood he is more than a delivery man. “I remember him bringing my Christmas package, but no one was home. Then he walked to Lidl, where my wife works, to give it to my wife,” says a local resident. Resident Jessica Faassen confirms that Aydin always goes the extra mile. “If you’re not there, he will send a message or honk if he has a package for you.”

Because of that commitment, a surprise party was organised for him. “You often see negative remarks about delivery people online but they deserve be put in a positive light for once,” Jessica explains. When Aydin arrived at the party, he was speechless for a moment. “It was really a very special experience.” The delivery man was showered with gifts: a beer package, chocolate and vouchers. “It wasn’t even about the gifts for me, the thought behind it was just very special.”

Aydin was very happy with the surprise party and hopes to continue working in the area until his retirement. “This neighbourhood is very special. I have worked in many neighbourhoods in Eindhoven, but I think this is the best.”

Ronald McDonald (Open) House Veldhoven

0

Perhaps not everyone knows what the Ronald McDonald houses offer. Their slogan is “Keeping families close”. This means that parents can stay close to the hospital where their very sick children are. The sick child’s siblings can also stay over so the family can be together. On Wednesday February 28, the Veldhoven RMDH has an ‘Open House’. Visitors are welcome to see the facilities and sample the coffee.

Ronald McDonald Houses provide affordable bedsit rooms, a communal kitchen and laundry facilities. They are always close to hospitals with specialised care. Situations may vary: premature births, operations, cancer treatment, children in intensive care. RMDH Veldhoven is one of the eleven houses in The Netherlands where parents can stay at a stone’s throw from their child. Maxima Medical Centre in Veldhoven is one of ten hospitals with an NICU – a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Recently, the hospital introduced a novelty, the ‘bambi belt’. It is a wireless band around the baby’s abdomen, which replaces the traditional spot electrodes that measure heart action and breathing. Currently, electrodes are attached to the delicate skin of a premature baby. This causes skin irritation, can be painful and disrupts the baby’s sleep.  The Bambi Belt also make it easier for parents to remove their child from the incubator to cuddle.

Royal visit

Whether this innovation is the reason King Willem Alexander is paying the Maxima MC a visit is unclear. It is certain, however, that a royal visit has been planned for Wednesday 28th. The King will be given a tour round the hospital and speak with doctors, staff, and parents of premature babies.

McDonalds

McDonalds founded the charity through which the RMD houses can operate. Worldwide, there are now over 380, eleven of which are situated in The Netherlands. However. McDonalds are not the only sponsors. Many companies and individuals support the RMDH with money, goods, or labour. Because the RMD houses depend entirely on charity, such help is the only way in which they can continue to offer their service to families.

Brainport fund starting to close gap between rich & poor

More help for staff with financial problems, extra guidance for the homeless and more people over 50 who can be helped into a job. These are some of the results of the ‘Brainport for Each Other’ fund, which was launched a year ago to close the gap between rich and poor in the region.

During the New Year’s meeting ‘The New Horizon’ in the Evoluon, Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem shared the first results of the social fund on Tuesday, which is fed with knowledge and budgets from companies, knowledge institutions and municipalities in the Eindhoven region.

According to Dijsselbloem, ‘Brainport for Each Other’ is gaining more and more content and scope. “Almost 2,700 volunteers from various companies have worked for social organisations in the region over the past year,” said the mayor. “More and more municipalities, companies, educational institutions and organisations are joining.”

Downside of prosperity

The launch of the fund a year ago did not come out of the blue. Due to the rapid growth of the high-tech region, some of the residents are in danger of not being able to participate in the success story. “We should not go the way of San Francisco,” the mayor said earlier. The specter of Silicon Valley, which has become an unaffordable place due to prosperity, ensures that municipalities, in collaboration with companies in the Brainport region, want to do everything they can to include the underclass in prosperity.

Alliance

To ensure this, the ‘Brainport for Each Other’ fund has been set up. In a year of ‘building and testing’, the parties involved decided to convert the fund into an association. “A broad, regional, democratic alliance with the objective of a region where everyone can participate, has opportunities and benefits from growth. The group now consists of about sixty participants and is growing,” Dijsselbloem said in his speech on Tuesday.

According to the mayor, some good results have already been achieved in the past year. For example, he mentions the ‘financial fitness’ program, in which 24 companies in the region have rolled out a ‘customised approach’ to help employees with financial concerns. “The companies have made the subject part of their policy. They have seen a significant decrease in the number of wage garnishments. That is a win-win situation for the company and the employees.”

According to Dijsselbloem, another success story is the partnership between chip machine manufacturer ASML and shelter organisation Springplank040. “I understood that help from ASML one day a week saves around 6,500 euros per month on ICT contracts at Springplank040. Thanks to these savings, they can assist four additional homeless people every month.”

BuddyWorks doubled

BuddyWork also received compliments from the mayor. “Next year we will scale up from 170 to 300 buddies throughout the region. In this way, we connect more job-seeking people over 50 in the region with buddies from the business community. They open up their network and help in the search for a new job.”

Steps were also taken to tackle low literacy and digital skills. “We have started a program aimed at low literacy and digital skills at 10 companies with 45 employees. We use the contacts with companies to track down their employees who have low literacy and offer them a tailor-made offer in the workplace,” says Dijsselbloem. .

Separate initiatives

The parties affiliated with the association want to ensure that prosperity benefits all residents of the region. “Our success depends on the success of the entire community. And it helps enormously that we become one association, and not a collaboration of separate initiatives,” Dijsselbloem concludes.

Children celebrate new construction of Achtse Barrier Spilcentrum

The highest point of Spilcentrum Achtse Barrier will be celebrated in the north of Eindhoven on Thursday. This autumn, the new building will house De Klapwiek primary school, childcare and the GGD.

Children celebrate the new milestone together with education councilor Stijn Steenbakkers, the construction company and school employees. “More than 300 children can grow, learn, play, discover and build their future here in a new and sustainable building,” says Steenbakkers.

Expats

The building has two floors and has sixteen classrooms for the school. Previously, fourteen classrooms had been assumed, but because more expats now live in the area, that number has been expanded.

Lampegat presents first city princess

For the first time, a city princess is wielding the sceptre over Lampegat. During the traditional Federation Ball at Eindhoven’s Parktheater on Saturday night around midnight, Mina d’n Urste (Mina the First) was presented.

Rosa van den Nieuwenhof is her name in everyday life. She is best known as a councillor for the Labour Party in the Eindhoven City Council. She takes over from Prince Kachelaan (Price HeatedStove).

Call for princess

Ten years ago, there was already discussion about the role during carnival in the city. There was even a debate in the city council, calling for the nomination of a pricess rather than a prince. Now, finally, the first City Princess breaks the pattern.

Court ladies

In the coming weeks, Van den Nieuwenhof will be the face during Carnival celebrations in Eindhoven. “I have repeated often  that it was time for a woman, so when I was asked, I had to say yes,” said the brand-new princess. Mina d’n Urste is accompanied by court ladies Myrthe and Julia and adjutants Django and Wisse.

Kringloop De Kempen in Veldhoven reopens after a fire

Thrift store De Kempen will open its doors again on January 14. The store burned down completely in July last year. After the fire was extinguished, the last remains of the building were demolished because it could no longer be saved.

The morning after the fire, the thrift store volunteers immediately looked for a new location. That has now been found, the new building is at Run 4305. This means that they are still on the same industrial estate.

Pride

Ton Dietvorst, manager of the thrift store, is extremely proud. “What I find so fantastic is the resilience of our entire team. A fire like this has a huge impact on many people. Almost everything went up in smoke. Without exception, everyone put their weight behind the realisation of the new store,” he says. The new location is also larger and more modern, Dietvorst said.

The fire brigade will have the honour of opening the thrift store on January 14. This is meant symbolically to show people that a circle has been completed again.

Eindhoven Comedy Festival downsized

Things are not exactly going well at the Eindhoven Comedy Festival. Due to a lack of interest, the organisation has to cancel two of the three festival days this weekend.

Only Saturday 20 January will continue. Friday and Sunday have been cancelled due to poor ticket sales. Ticket holders for Friday have received their money back and can visit a show for free on Saturday. Not a single ticket had been sold for Sunday.

‘Unexpected’

“We did not expect this, but we are going to do everything we can to keep everyone happy”, Raymon Hofkens, organiser of the Eindhoven Comedy Festival, says. During previous editions of this festival there were also fewer visitors than expected. “The festival is programmed in the large hall of theatre Pand-P. It is not fun for anyone if it is barely filled”, Hofkens adds.

The program initially included performances by top talker Rob Scheepers and comedian Jörgen Raymann on Friday. Sunday was an afternoon program. Then Steven Brunswijk would perform a cabaret performance.

Programme

On Saturday the day opens with a double programme by comedians Hermes Ahmadi and Joris van de Griendt. They perform a two-hour show together and are followed by the final of the Comedymatch, a competition for new emerging talent. The winner will be determined by the audience. Arie Koomen ends the day. He is known for the TV program Lama’s.

Please note that most performances are in Dutch
