Effenaar fires more than half its staff

0

The Effenaar has had to let 45 out of its 81 people go. That’s a result of the corona crisis. This includes both permanent and temporary employees.

“It’s unavoidable,” Effenaar director, Jos Feijen, says. “Every week we only have one or two small concerts with 100 visitors. Normally, we’d now have plenty of sold-out concerts with 1,200 visitors. The financial impact is enormous.”

The music hall usually organises around 300 programmes a year. This year that will be 70, at most. The Effenaar is, however, responding to the corona crisis.

Isolation sessions

It’s holding about 200 ‘isolation sessions’ – live concerts that can be watched via the internet. But, this is a free event, so it doesn’t generate extra income for the music venue. The current restrictions make it impossible to run an economically sound business.

Feijen expects the current stage restrictions to remain in place well into 2021. “The Effenaar is anticipating this. We’re, therefore, reducing the number of employees to a small, decisive team.”

“These people will run the limited number of available programmes. We’ll that be able to scale up quickly,” adds Jos,” as soon as the restrictive measures are lifted.”

‘Losing know-how’

“It pains me to have these talks with all the employees. With this many people leaving the organisation, we’re also losing a lot of knowledge and experience. But we aren’t going to sit back and do nothing.”

“We’re seizing the opportunity to look ahead with a fresh perspective. We must plan for the post-COVID 19 era,” the director says. The events industry has already said it would go under without government intervention.

First Monuments festival for Geldrop

0

This Sunday, Geldrop will hold its first Monumentenfestival (Monuments festival).

The Haydn Orchestra will spoil residents with classical music along the route that passes the town’s monuments. The programme starts at the Weverijmuseum (Weaving museum). Councillor Rob van Otterdijk will officially open the festival.

After that, the museum’s waterwheel’s function will be explained. Participants can then walk to Geldrop Castle’s park. Later in the day, guests can visit Brigida Church. The route ends at Hofdael centre.

During the day the sounds of Haydn, Mozart and Boccherini, among others, can be heard. The organisers describe the event as a musical programme that focuses on the three national monuments. People can visit the Monuments festival on Sunday, 13 September, from 11:00 to 17:00.

Free

After 16:15, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy something to eat and drink. Admission is free of charge. Because of the anti-corona measures, people have to register if they want to attend one or more of the musical ‘preludes’ or the concert.

There is room for only 30 people at the Weaving Museum. But there’s no limit in the castle park. Guests just have to maintain the 1.5m distance. Brigida Church can accommodate 120 visitors.

And at the Hofdael centre, there is space for 60 people. This centre is well-ventilated (4,300 m3/h) and is, therefore,  ‘corona-proof’. To reserve seats, please send an e-mail to p.couturier.cadd@gmail.com.

Please indicate whether you want to take part in all or parts of the programme. Please visit the Geldrop-Mierlo website for more information.

Festival Smitske sold out after all

0

The goal of selling 750 tickets within a week was not reached, but a few days later, the festival of the comedian Gerrie Smits is sold out after all.

The organiser says he is happy that the 750th ticket has been sold. “Despite the fact that we were unable to sell the tickets within a week, we continued anyway”, says Smits. “The last few days, tickets suddenly went very fast. We needed just over a week to sell the 750 tickets.”

Now that the last tickets have been sold, Smits can focus on getting the rest of the festival up and running. “We already have a collaboration with DJ La Fuente and the Evoluon, and now we’re going to work quickly to put the finishing touches on it,” Smits said.

The festival will take place on Saturday 16 October from 14:00 to 23:00.

What can we do to combat climate change? ‘Climate course’ launches in Geldrop

Climate change is becoming an increasingly frequent topic of conversation. In recent weeks we have seen news stories of wildfires, storms and of course the recent flooding in Limburg. In addition, a report by the UN’s IPCC confirmed that human behaviour is driving catastrophic weather events and that the situation is now ‘a code red for humanity’.

All this causes people to ask themselves, ‘what does climate change mean for my own local area? How can my neighbours and I be more sustainable? And can we get any funding for our sustainable initiatives?’.

IVN Geldrop is a local organisation committed to educating people about nature and sustainability. They recently announced plans for a ‘climate course’, which will be the first of its kind. The course aims to answer people’s questions about climate change and equip them with the tools and knowledge they need for a more sustainable lifestyle in their local community.

Co-organiser Tonny Scheepers describes the course as a combination of theory and practical activities. ‘We help you to look at your community from a different angle and to come up with an action plan together.’ The course also involves excursions to local sustainability ‘hotspots’ in Geldrop and Mierlo.

Scheepers says he is pleasantly surprised by the response to the course. ‘People are still getting to grips with the idea of climate change and its impacts. Even for us at IVN Geldrop, it’s still a first’.

There are still a few places left on the course. You can register until 1 September. The course will be in Dutch.
