Attractions Park Hilaria rebuilt

It’s hard work these days, in the burning sun, for the ride builders of Park Hilaria. The Eindhoven funfair opens again on Friday, so they’re rolling up their sleeves. “This is one of the best fairs of the year,” says an entrepreneur.

This year, Park Hilaria has almost a hundred attractions. With old familiar ones, but also new attractions, such as the Aeronout, an 80-metres high swing ride. Operators like to return to Eindhoven every year. “It’s fun and big. When the weather is good, it’s great here”, entrepreneur Danny de Beer, of Funhouse, says. His colleague Sam Remmers, who runs an attraction with coin pushers, agrees. “Eindhoven is always fun, there’s never any hassle here”.

Programme

The organisation guarantees that the ride prices for the attractions will not exceed €6. In addition to swinging and swaying, there is also plenty of music during the Eindhoven funfair and there are various terraces and food stalls. Dozens of Dutch artists and DJs come to Park Hilaria to perform. For visitors who have difficulty coping with the many sounds and flashes of light, there is a special low-stimulus funfair afternoon on Monday.

The funfair starts next Friday and lasts for ten days. Every year, Park Hilaria attracts around 450,000 visitors. This makes the funfair the largest event in the city after Glow.

Cultural sector in dire straits

The corona crisis has hit Eindhoven culture sector hard. Additional government support is needed to stay afloat, the directors of the Muziekgebouw and Parktheater say.

“We got a €3 million grant, but we earn €7 million. That income evaporated after mid-March. All the while you try to keep everyone employed. We need help with that. But that help will not get us all the way. We’re going to struggle because of this for years to come”, Giel Pastoor, Parktheater’s director, says.

Expenses simply continue, but the large organisations has all but lost their hospitality revenues and sponsorships. It is also all hands on deck at the Muziekgebouw. The extra financial support from the central government and the Municipality is sorely needed.

No income, but costs continue

“We can’t survive without government support. Ticket sales, catering, sponsoring has all fallen away. But the fixed costs continue,” says Wim Vringer, director of the Muziekgebouw.

The national government has already spent €300 million on the country’s ailing culture sector. Eindhoven City Council’s also put €3 million aside for this sector. But, according to Wim, that’s not enough. “That’s why pressure must remain on the national government to offer money for rent compensation. That’s the biggest problem for us, with a rent of €2 million per year”.

Cultural stages are now allowed to admit at most 30 people per performance. Next month, this number will increase to 100. It’s not profitable yet. Natlab cinema’s already had to lay off employees.

‘We might have to take drastic steps’

And if the crisis lasts much longer, the same will happen at Parktheater and Muziekgebouw. “It’s nonsensical to think that if your programme and the audience shrinks, the organisation won’t be affected. In the long run, we may have to take horrible steps”, Pastoor says.

Parktheater and the Muziekgebouw were closed for three months. This week the two institutions will open their doors again for the first time.

Effenaar and ASML collaborate to encourage international musicians

Poppodium Effenaar and chip machine builder ASML are strengthening their collaboration. The organisations aim to bring more international artists to Eindhoven in the coming years.

By working together smartly, they hope to bring 26 additional concerts of popular acts to the city. In this way they want to outdo music venues such as Utrecht’s TivoliVredenburg and Amsterdam’s Paradiso.

Festival

In addition to more concerts, they also want to expand the Hit The City city festival. This festival will no longer be during Dutch Design Week, but from August 30 to September 1. This allows the event to be organised outside. There will also be a new location on Ketelhuisplein. The number of visitors of 14,000 people should therefore be doubled. This year’s line-up consists of more than a hundred acts.

Initiative

ASML and Effenaar have set up several initiatives in the past year to bring more music to the region. The technology company contributes to strengthening the cultural offering in the region and thus also the business climate.

Under the banner of ‘Share The Vibe’, the organisations will also jointly organise concerts and programs to bring people with different cultural backgrounds together.

New Mayor: ‘Son and Breugel suits us’

A fresh wind is blowing through Son en Breugel since new Mayor Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen took office. Soon she will move from Vught with her husband and four children  to settle in her new municipality.

Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen is the successor to Hans Gailard who was Mayor of Son en Breugel for the past twenty years. Both VVD politicians, but Otters-Bruijnen does have a different style. “My focus is also on women in top positions. I want to set an example for other women and girls, to show how they can develop. I am also focused on young people, just like the city council, I want to involve young people in decision making”. The latter will sometimes be quite a challenge, since there are not many young people to be seen out and about in Son en Breugel..

The new Mayor has an immaculate career in public administration behind her, apart from a faux pas: a tweet she posted about six years ago. When theme park De Efteling was discredited because of the alleged racist theme behind its attractions, Otters-Bruijnen tweeted a photo of her dessert: ‘white custard with negro kisses’.* It was intended to support the Efteling, but it was not to everyone’s liking. The tweet brought Otters-Bruijnen a lot of comments. Both negative and positive comments, by the way.

Brainport Region

Son en Breugel has both the green village character and the economic activity. A versatility that Otters is proud of. “This gives Son en Breugel something unique. I am from Waalre myself, also a municipality with an active club life and a clear link to the Brainport Region. The success of this region is the cooperation between the various municipalities. If we can be in touch with each other and together achieve the things we want to achieve with regards to the societal challenges, that is wonderful”.

* Before 2005, the offensive name ‘Negroes’ kisses’ was used for a certain type of  confectionary. Since 2005, they have been called ‘Chocolate kisses’, or simply ‘Kisses’. Explanation added by Greta for EN, with apologies.

Glow draws crowds on opening-night

0

Glow, Eindhoven’s annual light-event, drew crowds on its opening-night. This despite the bad weather.

Especially the light show in the Philips Stadium and the projection on the Light Tower attracted a large crowd. Many visitors had prepared for the bad weather. Many were using umbrellas or rain-ponchos.

GLOW will continue till next Saturday. Thirty-two light-installations are displayed along a route through Eindhoven’s city centre. The walk past all installations is about five kilometres long.

Various access roads to Eindhoven’s city centre are closed from six o’clock in the evening. Saturday evening, when Glow started, traffic regulators were kept busy steering the large crowd in the right direction despite heavy rain.

Much talked-about swimming tournament comes to Eindhoven

ISL, the International Swimming League, is coming to Eindhoven from 11 to 28 November, the council has announced. There has already been unrest about the possible arrival of the tournament.

When, in early July, it was announced that Eindhoven council wanted to bring the tournament to the city, swimming clubs reacted with anger. The tournament would mean that swimmers would not be able to use the water for a month. The council promised the clubs that it would provide ‘alternative swimming facilities’.

Now that promise needs to be upheld, because ISL prefers to hold the event play-offs of in Eindhoven. That is the second round of the competition. The first round takes place in Naples. The final will take place in another city in early January 2022.

Although the contracts between organiser and council still have to be signed, councillor Stijn Steenbakkers is already enthusiastic. “It is great that the ISL has chosen Eindhoven as host city. We look forward to welcoming the swimmers, their coaches and teams”.

‘Inspiration’

“A major international event like ISL is interesting for Eindhoven – the swimming capital of the Netherlands”, Steenbakkers says. “The many, big names in swimming will be an inspiration for young people and regular visitors to the Pieter van den Hoogenband Stadion. In addition, it is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs – who were struggling due to the lockdown, to benefit from the event”.

‘Exciting cities’
In the International Swimming League, founded by Ukrainian billionaire Konstantin Grigorishin, various swimming clubs compete against each other. Grigorishin says he is pleased to be able to organise part of the tournament in Eindhoven.

“We are happy that Eindhoven is ready to join Naples, Budapest, Dallas, Las Vegas and London on the list of exciting cities the ISL has worked with. The Dutch are known to be passionate swimming fans who will no doubt be delighted to see local stars such as Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Kira Toussaint, Femke Heemskerk and Arno Kamminga in action”,  Grigorishin said.

Large venues may open conditionally

Several large venues can open their doors to the public again this month.

That’s following a government announcement. On Tuesday, the cabinet said it’s starting pilot projects to test accessibility tests practical effects. So, stadiums, venues and casinos in the country may reopen.

In the region, this concerns the Muziekgebouw, Natlab, Parktheater, Effenaar, and Jack Casino. PSV is also allowed to welcome fans again during the next home match against FC Groningen. That’s after months of lockdown.

Venues can hold some events under certain conditions. For example, visitors must have proof of a negative COVID-19 test the cabinet has announced.

Music, sport, and gambling

From 16 to 18 April, the Muziekgebouw (350), Natlab (42) and Parktheater (250) are allowed to admit visitors. On 24 April, it’s Jacks Casino’s turn, with 350 visitors. On that day, PSV is permitted to receive 4,000 supporters for the game against FC Groningen.

For the other professional football club in the city, FC Eindhoven, a maximum of 450 fans applies on 30 April. The first division club then plays against FC Den Bosch. That weekend, 130 people can also visit the Effenaar. The Eindhoven music venue will let people who want to attend an event know in advance what to do.

“It’s good news, but it really surprised us,” PSV commercial director, Frans Janssen, says. “We’re happy about this. But, it naturally raises many questions.”

“For our fans, but certainly for us too. We’ll now consult with the authorities concerned. Then we’ll communicate how we deal with this situation.”

Will new city pass raise pride of residents?

PvdA (labour party) and VVD (people’s party for freedom and democracy) would like to introduce a new Eindhoven city pass. The parties believe that this has many positive effects. The pass could give you free or discounted access to various activities in the city.

With the pass, the parties hope that institutions in the field of sports, arts and culture and other facilities will become more accessible. In this way, the pass should contribute to the pride of the residents and create a greater bond with the city. In addition, a city pass ensures that new Eindhoven residents get to know the city faster and that people can more easily participate in sports, arts and culture.

The city pass would also contribute to the economy. It has a positive impact for local entrepreneurs and would increase visitor numbers to municipal facilities.

Stigma

The pass would also remove a stigma surrounding poverty schemes. The city pass would ensure that people in poverty more easily come into contact with activities in the city. There is a special arrangement for people with a limited income to use the city pass.

The idea of the city pass will be discussed on Tuesday evening during a debate at city hall.

Park Hilaria popular despite heat

0

This weekend, crowds continued to visit Park Hilaria. Despite high temperatures, the event remains immensely popular.

So far, the temporary amusement park along the John F. Kennedylaan, has drawn over 150,000 visitors. As mentioned in our previous post, the 17th edition started Friday.

During this weekend, afternoons attracted few visitors. This was obviously caused by the glaring sun and high temperatures. On the other hand, the evenings were a lot busier than normal.

Additional water points

Because of the high temperatures, extra water points have been installed aross the site. If this does not help visitors to cool down enough, they can also opt for a “total cool down” under a “hilarious” shower.

Park Hilaria lasts until August 12th.
