Dancers with disabilities practise for championships

The enthusiasm is palpable, but they are also nervous. In the dance school in Geldrop, thirty students with a disability are practicing their steps for the last time, English Waltz, Tango, Quickstep and the Cha Cha. In a few days they will participate in the Dutch championships ballroom dancing G-class, which will be held in Mierlo this year. “Dancing is my passion and life”, one of them says.

During the lessons, the participants work hard on technique: counting, leading, following and moving to the beat. It is sometimes a tough challenge for the participants, but the focus is not only on the dance performance. “It is super fun and cozy here with all the people”, one student says enthusiastically. “It really makes me happy!”

The social aspect of dancing is also addressed. “For my daughter Esther, the social element is even more important than the dancing, she gets away from it all for a while”, a father proudly says. Dance teacher Moniek Mourik, one of the driving forces behind dance school Samen Zijn (being together), emphasises the importance of dancing as a means of communication: “Sometimes it is exciting, but everyone can dance. It is the perfect way to communicate when talking doesn’t quite work”.

Dance couples

This year, no fewer than eighteen dance schools from all over the Netherlands are participating in NK, Nederlandse Kampioenschappen (Dutch championships), with a total of 148 dance couples. For the dancers of Samen Zijn, this means extra competition, but also extra fun. “It is really special to see how many couples are participating in the championships this year!”, Mourik says.

The students themselves are already feeling quite a bit of excitement for NK. “I am practicing very hard and will be dancing with my brother. I hope we win, but I am also happy that we are doing this together”, a beaming student, with her brother next to her, says.

Dutch championships, NK

The official NK G-class will take place on Saturday in De Weijer sports complex in Mierlo, from 10:30 to 16:00.

Aagje (14) camped outside to raise money for metabolic disease

Aagje (14) from Eindhoven has raised more than €1,000 for research into metabolic diseases. She did this by sleeping in a tent in the backyard with her puppy for ten nights.

She did the collection for ‘Serious Request’*, a returning Dutch radio campaign that this year is committed to research into metabolic diseases. Aagje living in Schrijversbuurt (authors’ neighbourhood) herself knows a boy with such a condition. “A boy in my class has a brother with such a disease. I don’t know exactly how it is, but it’s not entirely… good. That boy gets tired quickly and such”.

At her school, all second-year classes participated in the campaign. Most students sold chocolate milk to earn money, but Aagje came up with something else. She created a page on Serious Request website and asked people to sponsor it. After a few days, she had already raised €200 and to the surprise of her classmates, the target amount of €1,000 has also been reached.

Her mother Katrien had to get used to the idea at first. “She has slept in the garden more often. But always with me or her brother. This time she wanted to go alone… and then in the middle of December…” She is now super proud of her daughter, who has probably raised more money than all the chocolate milk sellers put together.

Watchdog

How did she brave the cold? “I just put on thick pyjamas and grabbed lots of blankets”, Aagje explains. She didn’t find it scary, even though it was pitch dark. That was because of the presence of her puppy. “I had Illy with me, my fellow campaigner. A good watchdog. Without him I might have been scared”.

Serious Request campaign runs until today, Tuesday 24 December, after which donations can still be made. In total, more than €6,000,000 have already been raised for research into metabolic diseases.

Here you can find the activity from Aagje.

New city poet wanted

0

Who will become Eindhoven’s new city poet? At the end of January, the current city poet, Jessica Bartels, will hand over the baton to a successor. Potential poets have another month to sign up for this competition.

Eindhoven’s city poet holds the position for two years. The intention is that the city poet will regularly write and recite poems at important events in the city.

To be able to participate, poets must submit three works – one on Groot Eindhoven’s centenary, one about the future of the city and an own piece of work. A jury chooses the best four poets who will end up in the final round. The poems must, of course, be in Dutch.

New poet to be chosen in Jan

In the final, the four works have to be presented to the public. The audience will be allowed to give their opinion of the poets. In the end, a professional jury decides who wins. The final will be held on Thursday, 30 January, at the Natlab. Here the next city poet will also be announced.

The works, along with a short CV and motivation can be sent to f.vbragt@bibliotheekeindhoven.nl. The deadline for entries is 15 December 2019. People can get more information from the Eindhoven Library.

Tribute to first female counsellor

Few know who she is, Janna van Bekkum-van Gorkum. Yet she has been of great significance in Eindhoven. She was the first woman on the city council exactly 100 years ago. Her great-granddaughter and the municipality are now reflecting on that.

Van Bekkem-van Gorkum was a member of the municipal council from 1923 to 1926, not long after women’s suffrage was introduced. She was an ambitious woman. In addition to political work for the Social Democratic Workers’ Party (SDAP), she was also the mother of four children in a socialist family.

Pride

“I am very proud of my great-grandmother. It was very special what she did, in a real man’s world at the time. I am proud of her ideas, perseverance and ambition. She was also a very sweet mother,” says great-grandchild Inge Wessels.

Twelve hundred people sing together

In the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven, twelve hundred people gathered on Sunday afternoon to study a song and sing together as one choir. It was an attempt at a Dutch record, because that does not yet exist.

It is an XL version of the pop-up choir of the ‘Eindhovens Popkoor’ (pop choir). Everyone is welcome at this pop-up choir, whether you can sing or not. In 2.5 hours, the audience practiced the song ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’ by U2.

“We are very proud of this. We just want everyone to experience how nice it is to sing,” says Ruud van Deventer, one of the organizers. “We get happy from singing. It is good for your mood, it is good for your body and limbs and that is also what we want to radiate from the beginning. I think we have proven that here this afternoon.”

Amateurs and experts

It is a mix of qualities in the Klokgebouw. Many people are already familiar with choir singing, because they are in one of the various choirs of the Eindhoven Popkoor.

A young lady came to the Klokgebouw with a friend. “Whether I can sing well, that depends on who you ask,” she says, laughing. “I certainly can’t. I mainly sing in the car and in the shower,” her friend responds.

Singing with such a large group is a beautiful experience in any case. “It feels very magical,” says another participant. “You feel it through your whole body. It is very beautiful.”

“A lot of people came because it was fun, but they didn’t really want to sing – they all sang in the end,” says a choir member. According to Van Deventer, that is also the beauty of the gathering.

“People who have to come along and then come in with a grumpy head. At the end of the evening, they still sing along, and he goes home in a good mood. I just think that’s nice.” He also hopes that people keep singing.

Record attempt

The singing together was an attempt to get the record for the largest pop-up choir in the Netherlands. But there are no official records for that yet. The world record is still a lot higher. That doesn’t matter to Van Deventer.

“We were here with almost twelve hundred people for the first edition. That is our record anyway. The world record is 121,000, but that was unison singing. That is not a choir at all. So, I claimed the world record here today. I don’t give a damn,” he laughs.

What he also finds a great experience is that the Popkoor has been around for ten years this year. For the first time, they are performing in the Klokgebouw. The pop-up choir is an initiative of singing school SingShop, which Ruud van Deventer founded. They have been around for fifteen years today.

Wim van Bokhoven proclaimed Mierlo Person 2025

Wim van Bokhoven (75) received the honourary title ‘Mierlose Mens’ on Friday evening. This annual award symbolises the modest and committed residents of Mierlo who dedicate themselves to the community in special ways.

The award ceremony took place in the cultural centre ‘t Patronaat, in the middle of the cherry village*. Mayor Jos van Bree was also present for a speech. He characterised the Mierlose Mens (person or human) 2025 as sporty, socially committed and enterprising. It is the 36th time since 1986 that the board of the Stichting (foundation) Mierlose Mens has considered the nominations received at the end of the year.

Involved

Although he was not born in Mierlo, Van Bokhoven has made a strong commitment to the local community. For example, his involvement in education was great, which was evident from his years of commitment to the school board of the Mierlo catholic schools. In addition, Van Bokhoven has been committed to housing in Mierlo for more than twenty years. In 1979, he joined the board of the housing association ‘Woningbouwvereniging Eigen Woning‘ (housing corporation own house), first as treasurer and from 1984 as chairman. He fulfilled this role until 1998.

In addition to his administrative and social commitment, Van Bokhoven was also active in sports. He played for many years at football club V.V. Mifano and held the role of chairman from 1997 to 2007. His social commitment was also evident from his commitment to people with Parkinson’s disease. Inspired by personal experiences in his family, he took the initiative in 2013 to set up a meeting centre in Helmond, where patients and their loved ones can support each other and share experiences. Van Bokhoven remained chairman of this centre for ten years.

During Tamil New Year, the Indian Tamil community celebrates their culture and heritage. In addition, it is a way to get to know others and get together with a large group. “During Indian weddings, you meet between 500 and 1,000 people in one day. They don’t have these weddings here. They miss the togetherness.”

“For the Indian community here in Eindhoven, Tamil New Year is more important than other celebrations. Eyal Tamil New Year is not only about the day itself, but also about what precedes it. Starting in February, groups start practicing their act. Every week they meet once and from mid-March they meet twice a week. People come together and children can play with each other. It creates connection ”

Final phase of redevelopment of Strijp-S

The fourth and final construction phase of Strijp-S has officially begun. Over the past twenty years, Strijp-S has transformed from a Philips site into a new urban neighbourhood with cultural amenities, shops, and apartments. The final phase of the redevelopment focuses primarily on the construction of housing.

“With the start of this section, we are making affordable living possible in this vibrant location,” says Roy Beijnsberger, director of housing association Woonbedrijf.

The construction phase will begin with the construction of an underground parking garage next to the Microlab, a space for creative businesses and events. In addition, 150 residential lofts and 11 work lofts will be built by Woonbedrijf.

This year, the Matchbox, the first wooden building in Strijp-S, will also be completed. Construction of another wooden building, the Tribune, will begin this year. By 2026, there are plans to develop nearly 50,000 square metres for offices and 7,000 square metres for amenities. An additional 1,480 homes are also planned.

Business Investment Zone

Not only homes and land are being delivered. There’s also a plan for a specific investment project in Strijp-S. Entrepreneurs and property owners are using their own budgets to enhance the vibrancy and safety of Strijp-S. Until next month, entrepreneurs can vote on the introduction of the so-called investment zone.
