Pile of flowers growing for migrant Uldis

The pile of flowers is growing at Uldis’ regular spot on Klein Tongelreplein. Many people want to pay their last respects to the beloved migrant, who died last week after surgery.

Right opposite the entrance to the Albert Heijn with his back against the apartment complex, that was Uldis’ regular spot. This way he could greet all visitors who came out of the supermarket. “Hey girl” he would shout. Or he looked after the dog when the owner went shopping.

People regularly left him something tasty to eat or drink. Or had a chat with the popular man who originally came from Latvia. He didn’t speak Dutch but seemed to understand almost everything. When his legs had to be amputated three years ago, Tongelre held a successful fundraising campaign for an electric wheelchair.

Last honor

Now that Uldis’ wheelchair has disappeared for good, a memorial place has been spontaneously set up on the stones. A photo of Uldis with a friendly smile, a candle and a large mountain of flowers. It grows every day: many residents pay their last respects to the positive migrant with the amputated legs.

Uldis will soon have a municipal funeral. Although he has indicated that he ‘does not want to go into the fire’, it is still unclear whether it will be a funeral or a cremation. The service also has a private nature: only three or four people can be present.

Statue

Uldis was so inspiring to many residents in Tongelre with his sunny character that he deserves a statue, says a lady passing by with a full shopping bag. And it is not unthinkable when you look at the many bunches of flowers. Who knows, maybe this will be a final fundraising project for Uldis after the electric wheelchair.

PSV eliminated in eighth final cup tournament

0

PSV had to bow to Feyenoord in a packed De Kuip on Wednesday evening. The Eindhoven team were beaten 1-0 and were therefore eliminated in the eighth finals of the cup tournament.

After earlier victories this season against Feyenoord in the battle for Johan Cruyff Scale and in the competition, coach Peter Bosz’s team now lost to the Rotterdam team. This means that PSV’s chance to achieve ‘the double’ this season, by winning the national title and the cup, has been lost.

Negligent

Feyenoord immediately put pressure on and that quickly led to a chance from Gimenez. Shortly afterwards, PSV came out dangerously with a header that hit the post by Til. PSV was sloppy in possession of the ball, but the home team was initially unable to take sufficient advantage of this. Still, after half an hour it was a hit. Paixao first shot over the goal, but moments later Timber managed to find the net.

Chances

Shortly after halftime, PSV had opportunities to equalise. After first a dangerous scramble in front of the Rotterdam team’s goal, a little later it is Lang who is close to scoring. He appears to be offside. The PSV players then think about a penalty kick when Lang is knocked down by Wieffer. Yet no penalty is given. Bosz made frequent substitutions in the second half, with the arrival of Vertessen, Pepi and Van Aanholt, among others. Yet that could not force a turnaround in the game.

Feyenoord will meet AZ in the quarter-finals. PSV can now focus on the competition and the Champions League.

NT2 in One Day in the theatre

This training day with musical support in Parktheater is especially for internationals who will take the Staatsexamen Nederlandse taal B1 in 2024. It is for people who have already passed the A2 level and now want to make the jump to B1 in one day.

To acquire citizenship in the Netherlands, the Dutch language requirement has gone from the beginner level A2 to the intermediate level B1 since January 2022. 2023 was still a transitional year for some nationalities, but as of 2024 the B1 level applies to all nationalities.

Tips and tricks

To help more internationals, Dutch teacher Yvonne van Deursen-Bakx is going to give ‘international nerds’ B1 exam training in one day. NT2 in one day’ on March 2 at the Parktheater. Van Deursen will practice all four skills that are tested in the exam: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Only internationals with the A2 level are allowed to participate.”The entire day will be in Dutch. We will do different forms of work. I give the participants practical tips and tricks and show them which mistakes are often made,” says the language teacher.

During the training day the participants get a lot of information to process. Dj Robin makes sure they get enough exercise to pump oxygen into the brain at intervals for an optimal learning process. Brain-friendly learning, Van Deursen calls it. “With jumping to music, for example, you can ensure an optimal learning effect. I’ve been doing that with my online courses for some time.”

What many internationals don’t know is that the certificate remains valid for life. “So you don’t have to wait until you have been in the Netherlands for five years to take these exams and get this official certificate,” says Van Deursen-Bakx.

The location for the training day is not coincidentally the Parktheater in Eindhoven, says Van Deursen: “The theater would like to attract more internationals; connect more with the many internationals in Eindhoven.”

Van Gogh’s painting of Nuenen Gordina back in Brabant

The portrait ‘Gordina de Groot’, from the Nuenen period by Vincent van Gogh, has returned to Brabant. The painting is temporarily hanging in the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch. “It’s nice to have her back home”.

De Groot was the model for the work ‘Kop van een vrouw’ (‘head of a woman’) by the famous painter. After eighty years, the canvas can now be seen by the general public again. The work was privately owned for a long time. In 2023 it was transferred from a banker from The Hague to a British art collector. The new owner is now temporarily loaning it to the Den Bosch museum.

Luck

Curator Helewise Berger cannot believe her luck now that the masterpiece from Van Gogh’s Brabant period is in the museum. “It is an incredibly special painting and we are proud to be able to show it here. It also belongs on Brabant soil”.

In the painting you see the Nuenen woman Gordina de Groot. According to Berger, her expression is especially impressive. “Gordina was a farmer’s daughter and you clearly see how hard life on the land was.”

Gordina was often a model for Van Gogh. “For example, you can also see her in Van Gogh’s masterpiece ‘De aardappeleters’ (the potato eaters). He called her Sien. We know her name because Van Gogh mentioned her in a letter from Paris. Near Nuenen she was also called Dien“.

Farmer faces

In the winter of 1884-1885, Van Gogh painted a whole series of studies of farmers’ faces in Nuenen. At the time, the Brabant peasant women wore white hats. These fascinated the painter because of the contrast with the faces that remained partly in the shadows. “Those female heads you see here with the white hats – it is difficult – but it is so eternally beautiful –,” Van Gogh wrote.

Outbid

The Noordbrabants Museum actually wanted to buy the painting, but was quickly outbid last year. “We thought that was a shame and we took our courage and went to the owner in London”.

“We asked if the canvas could be taken to Brabant and he agreed”, Berger proudly says. “He bought it for £5.500,000, but we can now borrow it from him for six months. We are extremely grateful to him for that”.

This opinion is shared by Anne-Marie, volunteer at the Noordbrabants Museum. While she is showing a group around, she cannot believe her luck. “It’s great that we now have Gordina in the museum. Nice to have her back home!”

“This is really one of Van Gogh’s works where you actually see him yourself, reflected by this woman”, Anne-Marie explains. “Truly a woman of flesh and blood. It still gives me a bit of goosebumps. Wonderful!”

Will 9 year old Anniek become best pancake baker?

Nine-year-old Anniek Verbunt of elementary school De Achtbaan is a finalist in the competition for best junior pancake baker in the Netherlands.

Today, Wednesday afternoon, 28 February, she competes against Eline from Driebergen-Rijsenburg and Thijn from Utrecht for the coveted title. The participants will bake their pancakes in front of a jury of connoisseurs. Anniek thinks she can convince them: “With my special apple pie pancake I’m going to make something different from the rest”.

Aniek always makes sure the edges of her pancakes don’t get too dark and her secret ingredient is a pinch of salt. The kitchen princess is all set for the competition. “The past few weeks I’ve been practicing so much that we’ve been eating pancakes a lot”, she smiles.

She is excited to compete but losing is not a problem for her. “I’m at least number three in the Netherlands and I’m already proud of that. I don’t necessarily need to win”.

For those who have not yet read enough about the typical Dutch dish, here is another fun fact: Friday, 8 March, is Nationale Pannenkoekdag (national pancake day).

Hundreds of children pay traditional visit to music store

John Hanraths, owner of Keyboardcentrum on Heezerweg in Eindhoven had a stressful moment on Friday. Hundreds of pupils from primary school De Wilakkers were waiting outside his store much earlier than he had expected. Despite the owner’s stress, the traditional Christmas event was a success. “It was great fun”.

For years, classes from De Wilakkers primary school have been stopping at the store on their way back from the Christmas celebration in Sint-Joriskerk in Stratum. About five years ago, an employee was playing a Christmas carol in the window at that very moment. The children spontaneously started singing along and a tradition was born.

The event has now grown into a large musical gathering. Hundreds of pupils, but also parents, teachers and local residents sing and dance along. This year it happened again. This time the event was extra grand because of the thirty-year anniversary of the Keyboardcentrum (keyboard centre). “Normally the students walk in groups, but this year I had them all come at the same time. I even kept several parking spaces free for this”, John Hanraths says.

Two Christmas elves had also ‘flown in’ to hand out cakes and entertain the children, while the store employees played Christmas carols. “We play traditional Christmas carols, sometimes with a modern beat. The students really enjoy that, sometimes to the annoyance of the teachers”, the owner says.

Exciting

It was still uncertain whether the event would go ahead. The pastor finished the mass earlier than expected. “We were notified of their early arrival with only five minutes to spare”, Hanraths says. Fortunately for the pupils, the staff were able to act quickly and the Christmas event could continue as usual. “It was a bit stressful, but it was a lot of fun”.

Van Gogh painting from ‘Nuenen period’ briefly on display

From next month, one of Vincent van Gogh’s Nuenen works will be on display in Den Bosch. It is a portrait of farmer Gordina, one of The Potato Eaters.

The work can be seen in the Noordbrabants Museum for six months from January 15. A wealthy Chinese man managed to acquire the painting at an auction in London for more than 6 million euros. The Den Bosch museum could not afford this, but the management could make arrangements to borrow the work ‘Head of a woman’ from 1885.

The Potato Eaters

Model Gordina de Groot is one of the people depicted on De Aardappeleters (The Potato Eaters). According to the museum, the canvas is a ‘beautiful representation with attention to expression, brushwork and color composition’. “Only in Brabant does Gordina’s deep gaze have real meaning for people,” says director Jacqueline Grandjean.

Van Gogh and Gordina had a close bond. When she turned out to be pregnant as an unmarried woman, Van Gogh was even mistakenly assumed to be the father.

Pavement against senseless violence

A tile will be laid on Wilhelminaplein in Best next week as an action against senseless violence. The Mayor will unveil the sidewalk tile with a ladybug on it. “We hope to create awareness”.

“As a municipality, we believe it is important that senseless violence should have no place in society and therefore not in our village”, a spokeswoman for the municipality said. The municipality therefore supports the message of Stichting Zinloos Geweld (senseless violence foundation). “A stone is of course just a stone, but we hope to create awareness of senseless violence”, the spokeswoman said.

Unveiling

There have already been several requests for this gesture. Because Wilhelminadorp district has existed for 75 years this year, the municipality thought this was a good moment to combine the anniversary with the laying of the stone. The unveiling will take place on Saturday, 23 March, between 11:00 and 12:00. Mayor Hans Ubachs and a district coordinator are present. Residents are invited to join.
