Jorritsma wants to experiment with digital voting in Eindhoven

Mayor John Jorritsma wants Eindhoven to be part of an experiment to vote digitally in 2019, he writes in Het Financieele Dagblad (The Financial Daily).

He believes that manual vote counting should stop and wants to cooperate with different technology companies to develop a good digital method. “There are too many steps in which ‘human error’ could occur; from when the voter enters the polling station until the outcome of the election is announced by the Central Electoral Committee, ” says the Mayor.

In Eindhoven a recount in municipal elections was narrowly rejected by the City Council. Votes were recounted in 18 municipalities.

Municipal elections
A survey conducted by the NOS in municipal elections shows that 80% of the political parties has a different number of votes after the recounts. In less than half of the municipalities it led to a new distribution of seats.

Elections
Jorritsma hopes to get permission to hold a shadow election with digital voting during the three 2019 elections (provincial, regional water authorities and European).
