Local relief action for Sint Maarten

In Eindhoven, a relief action has started to collect money and goods for victims of Hurricane Irma on Sint Maarten.

The aim is to rescue and rebuild SXM (short for Sint Maarten). The Volkskrant reported a group of Eindhoven family members with relatives living on the Caribbean island initiated this relief action. From an Eindhoven office, they collect donations and coordinate various aid initiatives which started over the past few days.

The initiators explain donations of money are welcome, but also items, including clothing and household goods. The relief organization uses the network of Unified Sint Maarten Connection, another organization with almost 1,200 members which assists residents of Sint Maarten and Saba in the Netherlands.

Rebuild SXM’s goal is not just to provide emergency assistance or short term aid to victims, but to provide long term assistance.

During the past few days, several military planes departed from Eindhoven Air Base to Sint Maarten carrying relief supplies such as water, food and medical supplies.
