Greenhouse on new Eikenburg field promises opportunities

The large greenhouse on the new Eikenburg field offers new possibilities. Most vegetables for both the Eikenburg and the Orangerie field can now be grown in the greenhouse. Above all, from a part of the plants seed can be mined for next year.

The new city field on the Aalsterweg has been made available by Trudo, after the field on the Heezerweg had to be cleared for housing last year.

Since January Eikenburg has been working to create the green beds and has been preparing the ground for growing vegetables. There also is a herb garden. The new city field is bordered by the old trees of the estate.

Apart from the Eikenburg field the Orangerie field remains in use as it is more suitable for growing vegetables on larger surfaces.

The city fields are part of City Fields Eindhoven, an organization which aims to grow vegetables for the food bank. The initiative comes from Dré Rennenberg of the Elderly Appeal, that wants a better distribution of wealth in our society.

He sees the Eikenburg field as “a crown on our work’. Because now there is, besides knowledge, volunteers and locations a large quantity and variety of vegetables that can be grown for the food bank. All proceeds will go to the weekly 1200 families that need to make use of the food bank.

Currently there are 50 volunteers working in the city fields and there is also a collaboration with Springplank040, who are assisting people to paid jobs. There also are more and more companies and institutions that let their staff cooperate for a day. For your imagination: in April the volunteers all together worked 743 hours on both fields.

Apart from the many hands there is also a structural need for money which is why City Field Eindhoven established the Gardener Fund. People who want to support City Field financially themselves have the possibility to become Buddy of the Field.
