Orangerie not to be asylum seeker centre again

The Orangerie in Eindhoven will not be used as centre for asylum seekers again. There are too few incoming refugees, writes the City Council. The permit for housing refugees will also expire at the end of next year.

The Eindhoven City Council was reacting to questions from the ChristenUnie. The opposition party asked the mayor and councillors if refugees would again be taken in at the Orangerie.

According to the council, this is not the case because there is hardly any influx of new refugee groups. ‘We have no indication that there is any need for extra facilities. As for future developments, we cannot, however, make any statements or predictions. Most people who are being housed in Eindhoven at the moment, have come to to the Netherlands with the intention of being reunified with there families’, writes the City Council.

Other than the Orangerie, the City Council is also not looking for other locations for taking in asylum seekers. This may change in the near future, if the refugees numbers increase again. However, Eindhoven is working with regional authorities to accommodate refugees who have a residence status.
