Jakob Wedemeijer sworn in as new Eindhoven councillor

Jakob Wedemeijer was sworn in on Tuesday as Eindhoven’s new councillor for sports, inner city, and events.

25 council members voted for his nomation, with 18 voting against.

Among others, opposition parties CDA and VVD are not enthusiastic about Wedemeijer’s appointment, with the VVD citing his lack of administrative experience. The CDA sees Eindhoven’s existing six councillors as sufficient.

Coalition parties PvdA, GroenLinks, SP, and D66 argue that a number of cases in Wedemeijer’s portfolio, which include budget cuts for sports facilities and keeping the ice skating rink open, require attention.

The SP nominated Wedemeijer last month as departing councillor Bianca van Kaathoven’s successor.

Wedemeijer, a lawyer for foreign nationals, owns a law firm in Alkmaar and was party chairman for the SP in Heerhugowaard.
