Coffeeshops allowing foreigners will not be sanctioned

Eindhoven coffeeshops will not be sanctioned for serving foreign nationals in 2017, mayor Rob van Gijzel has announced.

Allowing foreigners in coffeeshops has led to a significant reduction in street dealing, a survey revealed in December last year.

Residents and businesses situated near coffeeshops, as well as an area co-ordinator and community police officers, have all reacted positively to the current approach.

The impact of extending the so-called ‘I-criterion’ will be monitored over the coming year, and sanctions may still be imposed if and where necessary.
