Memorial bike ride for Timmers couple, MH17 victims

Family, friends and colleagues gathered on Sunday morning for the Memorial Tour, a bicycle tour to commemorate Hannie and Geert Timmers, victims of the flight MH17 disaster.

The couple was in the fateful flight MH17 air crash on their way to Bali for a cycling holiday, in July last year.
Next to their teaching jobs, at Fontys and at primary school De Boschuil, they were passionate cyclists and actively involved in Toerclub Woensel.

They are remembered as optimistic and sociable people, engaged in community activities and people whom you could always rely on. Especially among the older members, the loss had a great affected. "I still think of them every day," is a common reaction. And "you are still confronted with it through daily news."

A memory cycle trip was held to give honour and tribute to the couple the weekend before the 17th of July.

A speech was given by chairman, Peter de Kort, Geert Timmers’ successor, and a minute of silence was offered. Then the group set off. A team of colleagues and acquaintances from Tilburg joined the bike trail. The tour ended in the town of Haghorst, where coffee was served, and a get together was organised with the couple’s children and family.
