Cocu´s reaction to narrow defeat PSV

PSV head coach Phillip Cocu insisted that his side had put in a decent display, in spite of the 1-0 defeat at home to FC Zenit.

“It’s disappointing to be left-empty handed”, said Cocu. “I think we’ve put in a decent display against a very strong opponent. We failed to take our chances whereas they capitalised on one of the few goalscoring chances they created. The little details eventually made the difference. We created a number of gilt-edged chances but lacked cutting edge up front, although we are a prolific team in the Dutch league. I think we still have a chance to reach the next round, so we will put up a brave fight in Russia next week”, concluded Cocu in a defiant mood.

“Of course this 1-0 win is a great result for us”, said FC Zenit manager André Villas-Boas at the post-match conference. “But we haven’t won anything yet. There’s still the second leg at home next week, but this is obviously a good start. This was only our first competitive match after a number of weeks, but we’ve shown we are able to compete with any team.” The Portuguese manager hailed his side’s defensive display.” We were wary of PSV´s attacking strength but we succeeded in quelling their threat. PSV created chances but failed to find the back of the net. We did and I think we deserved to win this game”, said Villas-Boas.
