‘Terror suspects serious, but not alarming’

According to the Mayor of Eindhoven, Rob Van Gijzel, the arrest of three terror suspects from Eindhoven and Arnhem on Tuesday is very disturbing but not alarming.

The three suspects who were arrested Tuesday were involved in the ‘preparation of terrorist crimes’. They also were inclined to join the Al-Nusra Front, a terrorist organization that has contacts with Al Qaeda.

One of the accused is a 26-year-old returnee from Syria – and already linked to the terrorist organization. The other suspects aged 26 to 30 years were recruited to give financial support to jihadists.

According to Van Gijzel, the local city council, the Police and the Public Prosecution Service (Openbaar Ministerie) are all keeping a sharp eye on the situation. Focus on areas such as combating potential breeding grounds for jihadism are a key initiative.

Also there is work on a hotline for reporting radicalization in the city. Furthermore, there is increasing focus on cooperating with the Muslim community to address potential problems in the future.
