‘Milieu Educatie Centrum’ funding cut

The MEC (Environment Education Center) in the Genneper Parcs will be closing in December. This has been announced by the city council.

Twelve employees will lose their jobs due to this decision. This is caused by a decided cut in the expenses. The city council is planning to roll out environment education throughout the whole city from now on. How this is going to look like has not been made clear until this point.

The council wants to lease the building of the environment education center to ‘De Seizoenen’ (the seasons). This is a care organisation that provides daytime activities for people with a developmental illness.

During the last few years the city has been searching for an entrepreneur who would utilize the center without using subsidisation. That plan was not feasible.

The MEC (Environment Education Center) has a regional charisma. Many school classes in the region pay visit to the center.
